4. Hi, I've just joined the site looking for some tips to improve my playing and some general bass nerd banter. I've played bass a few years and been in Aberdeen band Glassman for over a year now, kicking out some heavy stoner rock tunes. I've always played blues and rock styles but really want to learn some funk and expand knowledge of playing in general. I realised just yesterday after looking at some stuff on this site I don't know how to read the notes on the bass clef!! I've played guitar for years and can read the Treble clef ok though I'm pretty rusty these days, Nirvana and tabs set my playing back massively!! Equipment wise I play a 2006 Burns London Bison. This thing is fitted with a Delano hybrid pick up plus the three stock Tri-sonics and Schaller super adjustable bridge, it's a bit of a monster and puts up with some heavy abuse! I still have my first bass, a Washburn X-100, I re-finished it with Denim and patches but it's not the nicest thing to play. Also I have the king of basses; a Borisov BAS-01. If you've never played one of these beasts then you can't really say you’ve played bass at all! A neck that is only rounded of between the 2nd and 14th frets, pickups with such a low output you'll think you amp is broken, a bolt on neck in such a shallow body cavity rout that the strings are about an inch from the body and a 7 pin jack socket! Bit of an ebay impulse buy, unfortunately it's also my most expensive bass! I use a Peavey Combo 300 with either a Peavey 4x10” (one with the rear facing horn) or a Peavey 2x18”. Also I'm in the process of rewiring a 18watt Marshall clone to make it more of a bass amp. I'm not really into effects any more (I went through a phase of having a massive pedal board), though I did just buy a bass wah... I like to just play loud and overdrive my amp with heavy playing and high output pick ups though again I do take a Sans Amp with me to gigs for some drive and DI. Still I like to keep it as simple as possibe!! Looks a good site though, I've missed gear porn since the Stonerrock jam room died and I've already found some cool lessons!
