1. yeah yeah, i know!!

Just looking for an inspiring slap groove to learn from and thought this was ace and worth sharing. Regardless of it being played on keys, its still providing the bass line and shouldn't be disregarded just because its played on another instrument. The song has that Louis Johnson feel I reckon, and it's definitely something to try. And with my bedroom walls as my witness I'm guna try and get some parts of this track down!! After all, this is the section for "those who want to push the boundaries a bit".

    Anybody given it a go?

  2. Yeah for sure!! :)

But there's something special going on under those keys and afterwards, and if not there could be!! I'm sure the whole song could be adapted and done (by better bassists than me). Would be an absolute belter to do live, just wondered if anybody'd had a go?

Cracking groove throughout, spesh the middle 8 - its ace to play to in my room (badly!), what a groove!

  3. Hi all, was listening to MJ's bad album the other day and was stopped dead by the chorus on the appropriately titled Speed Demon! What a masterpiece- I can't believe I never spotted this til now!

Was just wondering if anyone here knows whose majestic thumb is on this record? Sounds like Louis Johnson to me....

Any one had any experience covering this stunner?!

    Have a gander:

  4. Consequently a 32" bass feels more like 34"....

+1 on that. Although I'm guna be awkward and suggest it feels somewhere in between. Doesn't quite feel like a 32" like my Stu Hamm Urge I does. I'm a happy owner of one of the first Fender Custom Shop models (WITH Phil Kubicki's 6-way preamp). Slap tone to die for and it was fantastic in the studio. Top bass. Not looking forward to changing the strings anytime soon though.

  5. Marvin Gaye - Got to give it up (part one)

Just heard this on the radio and no matter how often I hear it, it just always leaves me going.............................yeah!

    Also,

Jackson 5 - I Want You Back is always a classic, has some great outro frills (I can hear it in my flat mate's room, and it makes me wana funk like no-one is watching).

    Best stop now really

  6. Hi all!

Been on this site for a few weeks now, just occurred to me that I haven't sent out a big hello yet.

    *apologies*

My names Bert, I'm at uni in oxford (*ahem...thats oxford brookes) but home is Windsor. I'm currently playing electric bass in a hiphop/funk band (www.hangmancharlie.co.uk) at uni and in a blues/rock band (www.brockandthebadgers.co.uk) with my father and gary numan's old drummer (tubeway army era) around the Windsor area. Sorry for any shameless plugs....unintentional I promise.

Despite the slings and arrows of outrageous financial misfortune at present (being a student and all), I support the ethic of all good musicians; "I want two of everything". Consequently, I have amassed a small collection of basses, but I most enjoy sporting my customised Fender Urge I (mim) live and my Kubicki Ex-Factor 4 in the studio through either a Peavey 450W stack or my Trace 350 combo. Current pedal board includes EBS Multicomp, Dunlop 105Q Bass Wah, Akai Deep Impact, MXR Microamp, Artec Big Dots Tuner, and Zvex Woolly Mammoth.

Influences and heros include: Jack Bruce, Stu Hamm, Flea, Victor Wooten, Andy Fraser, Stanley Clarke, Jean Jacques Burnel, Leo Lyons, John Entwistle, Larry Graham, Abe Laboriel and 'Nard Edwards. I'd like to say that I'm an average to competent funk/rock bassist, but I'm sure I'll be put to shame by everyone on here. That's ok, I tell myself thats its not the notes you play, but the notes you don't.........although people seem to be much better at that too!

Always looking for new gear, people to jam with and musicians to talk to about geeky bass business. So hit me back!

Many thanks to all the guys I've already met on here too, you've been a real help

  7. Hi Tim, I'm an intermediate bass player (blues, rock, funk) based in oxford, but I jam with a band every wednesday in windsor. I can be around on a wednesday in windsor from 5 most weeks I reckon. I can't read a note and know absolutely no theory, I just play with my ear, fingers and thumb. Lemme know if this suits.

Don't let Slough get you down man!

  8. Hi, I'm looking for someone to gimme a few lessons in double thumbing and slap a la victor wooten/vail johson/stu hamm etc. Tall order I know! I'm based in oxford, but happy to travel with my own axe and practice amp. I'm an intermediate player, I can slap and tap to a fair standard, just looking for that extra low end spice to kick me out of my current playing plateau.

    Hit me back!

    Bert
