1. I also read somewhere that you could use D'Addario Jazz light flatwounds as the bottom 4 strings would be very similar to the normal cello tension. I'm picking up the cello tonight so will have a look at the string thickness and see where to go from there. But if anyone has any more suggestions fire away, it'd be awesome if we could find a solution for everyone.
2. Hey hey I was just wondering if any bass chatter has tried and succeeded in tuning a Cello in bass standard tuning? Basically I've been given a cello from a guy at work for free and rather than playing in the standard cello tuning C-G-D-A I was hoping to tune it in bass standard so all my fingerings etc can cross over without trouble. Obviously it'll probably be in standard tuning an octave higher than bass but I'm hoping to use it to practice on and to see how I get on with it before I get myself a proper EUB. I've read multiple forum posts about doing this but can't find a solid answer that has worked. Some people have recommended using Rotosound Tru Bass 88s short scale flatwound bass strings. However I don't want to do something that ends up breaking or damaging the cello. The scale length of the cello is about 27.5" I believe. Can anyone offer some advice? Cheers
3. Bass Direct for me. Went in to buy a strap and have a look around one day and got chatting with Mark. Mentioned I was thinking about buying a 5 string but wouldn't be for ages and he insisted I tried loads of different ones he had in stock. Even though I wasn't buying anything other than a strap that day Mark really made me feel welcomed and was great to chat with. +1 Bass Direct
4. Well my EMGs arrived and are now fitted and I couldn't be happier. I gigged them Saturday night through my Ashdown ABM500 Head and they sounded amazing. Loads of punch and clarity with a modern sound, just what I wanted. The only downside was I couldn't fit the battery anywhere so had to fork out more money to have a luthier install a battery box in the back of the bass. It's a nice tidy job and will make it a lot easier to change the battery. Def happy with my decision.
5. I got my VM Jazz last month and think it's amazing quality for the price paid. I too was a little underwhelmed by the pickups but I think this was down to my last bass having active Duncans with an Ibanez preamp. I found that the Jazz was lacking a little ooomph for me and being a fan of a more modern sound I decided to purchase a set of EMG JX active pickups. These are arriving tomorrow and I'm hoping they add that little something that I feel is missing from the bass' tone. I'll let you know how I get on with 'em.
6. Just ordered a set of EMG JX pickups with he solder less connect system http://www.emgpickups.com/products/category/245/2 Got them from an American eBay seller for £127 inc postage, cheapest I'd found in the UK was £160 inc postage Will let you know how they sound when I get them.
7. Bump! More Pictures - http://s20.photobucket.com/albums/b250/Ale...son%20Acoustic/
8.
I'm sure as you're well aware you need to do some soldering to get the system in, in the first place. Otherwise it's great if you want to swap between EMG pickups.
That was true for the old version, the only solderless connection was to the pickup. The new system and now the only system that EMG does is completely solderless.
9. Greetings! I'm looking at fitting a set of EMG Jazz pickups into my squier vintage modified jazz bass and after much trawling of the interwebs found there is the discontinued soldered set still kicking about and the newer solderless set. http://www.emgpickups.com/products/category/25/2 I've got no problems soldering, did it for years when I was a tech at a music college, but like the idea of the solderless connections for ease of swappping out pickups/cpntrols etc. I'd eventually like to swap out the controls for the EMG BTS system and routing a jack socket on the side of the bass. Has anybody used the solderless system? I've read good and bad things about the system, some saying that soldered connections will always be better and some saying it's genius. I'm definitely sold on the pickups themselves, just wasn't sure which version to get. Anyone got any thoughts? Cheers Alfie
10. Have you looked at a Line 6 GX interface? http://line6.com/podstudiogx/ I have a GX at work and a UX2 at home. Zero latency with amp modeling, can be run standalone and dead easy to use plus they come up cheap on ebay from time to time. Ideal for home practice/recording
11. Hey hey I’m selling my active sub bass unit I used to use in my home studio setup which complimented my Tannoy Reveal monitors beautifully. Because of neighbours I never really used it and have since sold my Tannoys so decided to sell it as well. Will work with any studio, hifi, 5.1 system with loads of features and inputs on the back. Mint condition. I paid £90 for it with delivery 18 months ago but they have since come down in price so asking £40 cash on collection from Leicester or can arrange delivery for £10.
