1. I bought a Cirrus BXP with hard case for £250 on eBay. Comes to me next week. I didn't want the glossy weirdwood finish really, but I wasn't going to pay a hundred quid more for the dark wood one. I shall report back on my satisfaction!
2. It seems the Grind is available with active pickups, and the Cirrus is available with a natural wood finish, which sort of contradicts what I said earlier, although I still don't think it's possible to get a passive Cirrus. So I'm thinking natural wood Cirrus. There's one on eBay but it's collection only (250 miles away), and a little overpriced.
3. I'm thinking of buying one of these, used, for ~£250. It means I can sleep at night without worrying anxiously that I have a money spending problem (supposed to be house saving, and I'd rather not sell my Wolfgang guitar). So a cheap bass like this looks good and means I keep my favourite (and only) guitar. but, which would you have? The Cirrus, or the Grind ? Both 4 string, neck-through, and both non-USA BXP models. I think the obvious difference is that the Cirrus has active electronics while the Grind is passive. To be honest, the only active electronics I've been near were those in an electro-acoustic guitar (Tanglewood Odyssey), and it's not something I think I particularly want on my bass guitar - flat batteries, more knobs and buttons to be unsure about, etc. So unless there's a really convincing reason why I would want active pickups, then I think that's one point towards the Grind. Cirrus seems more readily available used, which means cheaper used, although the Grind is the cheaper one when new, but this might just be because of the pickups/electronics. I had initially totally written off the idea of these Peaveys because they're all apparently 35" scale, but the Cirrus BXP I just looked at in the music shop looked to be just nice - not too big at all. The neck is very slim at the top too. In terms of appearances, I think I prefer the Grind with the natural wood finish, over the Cirrus with it's fussy glossy tops. Any thoughts? cheers, Carl
4. I think it looks great. Definitely what I would be having if it wasn't so expensive. I just don't get it. The Skylines, being the 'squires' (right?) ought to be a few hundred quid surely, not £1k. The USA ones should be about £1k, not bloody £2.5k. I'm likely to end up with a Peavey at this rate.
5.
didnt know it was Lakeland
Yep, that's what the accent over the A is about apparently.
6.
MB1. LOCAL NEWS! Monster, Monster , Monster! Just been in Johnny Roadhouses in Sunny Mancunia! 7.
...take the train to Birmingham?
Thanks Andy. Birmingham isn't so far, come to think of it. Having said that, I'm probably going to buy used in the end.
8.
All the Laklands I tried in their Newcastle store had quirks that I havent seen on the earlier models. I think personally the magic of Lakland has faded a little, and they are quite expensive.
Hi. What sort of quirks do you mean? These were the Skyline models I presume? They sure are pricey considering they're the import models. I'm amazed that the 44-02 can be nearly double the price of the 44-01, just because of different electronics. I'm almost tempted to go for the quilt-top 44-01 deluxe that's on eBay at the moment. I don't fancy the top-less natural wood 44-01s. It's not the prettiest slab of wood really.
9. Thanks for that. I rang Sounds Great and they said they stopped stocking them he thinks because they had to deal directly with Lakland and the prices shot up.
10. phew.. well and truly dug up from the dead.., but .. : What's the current status? Sounds Great in Cheadle aren't showing and Laklands on their website, and Sound Control went under from what I remember. Did they ever come back? There does seem to be a (shoddy) website at soundcontrols.co.uk. The name Sound Control seems to have been taken by a club or something! Anywhere else in Manchester where I can get my hands on some Laklands ?
11. Thanks guys, and thanks for the extra information. It is my favourite guitar. It feels great to hold and play. To me it feels small and 'stubby' which is something that I love, and I like that it doesn't have an irritating floating trem. Unfortunately though I just never pick it up. In fact it's in the hardcase under my bed right now, because my drum sticks kept ending up in its general direction. I should really keep it. I've got a 2Box Drumit5 electronic drum kit, hopefully soon a nice bass, and if I kept the guitar then I could almost be a one man band, lol
12. Upon further consideration (and reading), a Lakland DJ4 might be what I'm looking for.
13. How about trade for a nice guitar, in hard case and all original papers/build sheets (plus £750 cash)? : http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=130748
14. I'm considering trading my guitar for a bass, after playing on a borrowed Hohner Rockwood bass for the last couple of days. I reckon my Wolfie is worth about £1k. It's trans-purple, has the D-tuna, birds-eye maple kneck, pearl tuners etc. It's what people call the "Standard Deluxe", but I was told by Peavey ( http://forums.peavey.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=2070 ) that there's no such thing as "Standard" and "Standard Deluxe", but just regular USA-made Wolfgang, and then the squire-like "Special" (that's the cheap import one). Mine's the USA one. It's basically as per the attached photos (not my pictures, but the same guitar, case, etc.). Have original build sheet and owners guide/manual. I think I want a Lakland 4-94. Not in tobacco-sunburst though. I'm also quite taken by the look of the Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass, especially the trans-coloured ones. I suppose the Lakland would require cash from me, and the Fender would require cash the other way. I'm just considering the idea at the moment, as I sort of figure I won't get a Wolfie like this again too easily. When I did get this one, the seller wouldn't ship internationally, so I had to get him to ship it to a car parts dealer in Texas that I'd dealt with before (mvp motorsports), and then I paid that car parts dealer $200 plus actual shipping cost, to get him to ship it to me. Then I paid the 30% VAT & duty etc when it came in too.. So I reckon once this is gone, I'll probably regret it if I ever think about having an electric guitar again. As it is though, I've not touched it (or any guitar) for probably nearly a year and I feel I'm unlikely to progress to a point in guitar playing that I'm happy with anyway. So, is that of interest to anyone with either of those basses, or some other bass? I heard good things about Carvin basses too but they seem to be few and far between. Reading what people write on this board, there seem to be a lot of people who are selling basses because they always play their Fender J-bass more than anything else, which is pointing me towards the Fender. I really like the look of the Aerodyne versions though. The interest in the Lakland came about through me being quite a huge Chicago fan, and seeing what Jason Scheff was playing. cheers! Carl
