  1. One of my bands has a member who's wife has recently given birth to their first child and one member in the other band has a dependent with Crohn's disease and is at high risk. I don't think either band is busting a gut to get out there gigging until we are happy the risks are minimal.

My other thought is that landlords will be desperate to get max numbers in that their spacing regs allows so if the choice is putting an extra couple of tables in earning money or using that space to host a band that will be £200-£300 out of the till straight away then many pubs might not be rushing to put live music back on.

  2. Finally got round to watching it the other day. As others pointed out theres a huge mismatch of time dedicated to the pre solo years, I looked how little time was left when they got post Domino's and thought wtf.

I saw him once live, just one of those artists I felt I ought to see while they were still active but it didn't inspire me to do it again. He cut loose a couple of times giving a glimpse of how good he once was but otherwise seemed to be phoning it in a bit. I think Billy Preston was on keys.

  3. As with all the really good players, in many of RG's lines there is often a bit more going on than the first casual listen suggests. Still serves the song and doesn't dominate the performance but often retains a nicely melodic accompaniment to some of the guitar and organ wizadry at play.

  4. Back in the day when there were record fairs and people would turn up with cassettes of bootleg stuff (often with their own made up titles and home printed inlay cards) these Sounding Out sessions with interviews would be fairly regular features or the extracted interviews would pop up on other Yes gigs from a different era to fill the tape and give value for money.

  5. I'm not usually bothered about these kinds of things when someone just sits down and plays, I already know they are good players. Hence I've watched more of Sklars because he includes interesting anecdotes and is happy to give his thoughts on subjects outside of music, from the perspective of the wisdom of someone that's been around and seen stuff, which makes them far more interesting to me.

  6. Mine won't be in same league as most but then I don't turn over very much gear. Around 2006 I picked up a US jazz S1 on eBay in mint nick with hard case included. It had been relisted due to a time waster and was on a short relisting time of about 3 days. I wondered if it was a scam but in 2006 these were still fortunately not too common. I was surprised that my sub - £400 bid won it ( the bass was under 3 yrs old from serial number). When I eventually collected it and handed the cash over it was exactly as listed. When I got it home I found the original receipt in the case, original owner had bought it from Denmark St for over £800. I still have the bass, it's probably the best player of the 3 Fenders I have. Still gigging it.

  7. Until the published R value comes down substantially I'd be quite dubious about being in an enclosed small soundproof box thats had numerous bodies through it in the preceding 7 days,  with 3 other people struggling to maintain 2m separation for 3 hours. If that means the band want to move on without me then I'll wish them all the best.

I even like "Shades Of......" it's one I still play (on vinyl, natch!) to this day. I have them all,up to and including "Made In Europe" after which my interest waned somewhat. Plus some 12" picture discs (unplayed) of "In Rock", "24 Carat" and "Fireball". Love them all in their own way, saw them a few times: the last time at the Empire Pool Wembley in 1976. The tube journey home was a riot! Packed full with everyone having a great time.

The Morse era material is a mixed bag but Purpendicular and Abandon are definitely worth a listen.

While I agree those three were massive, Zep was always seen as not really a heavy metal band, Sabbath's legend was kept alive partly by Ozzie's continued fame.

I wonder how much Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and Whitesnake helped to bury Deep Purple? And then before you knew it metal was redefined and they were just another bunch of old guys past their sell by.

Odd how it can happen. They sound more prog than metal to me now.

They never saw themselves as heavy metal. Gillan famously said in a later interview 'Heavy metal makes me want to vomit'. When Purple signed to EMI they ended up on the Harvest label which tended to be set aside for their more left field artists. Even before Gillan and Glover joined they were seen as a 'progressive' group.

  10. Considering the circumstances of the friction between Gillan and Blackmore had got to the point where Gillan had already tendered his resignation and recorded his vocal parts separate from the rest of the band it's surprising how good some of it is. They were clearly short of material so virtually everything got released and it's still a bit of a short album. Painted Horse eventually came out on a rarities album but it's a bit weak and you can see why it was left off. Gillan gets to have a bit of a vent at Blackmore on Smooth Dancer. There's some slick keyboard work from Lord on the whole album holding it all together.

  11. Important point made about not so much when will we get back to gigging but how few venues will remain for us to be all competing to play in?

Many places were struggling before this. By the time they are allowed to reopen they will have accrued a sizeable debt in gov loans. If the bands aren't pulling in a lot of business then music may be seen as a luxury they can't afford to keep putting on.

  12. I'm the worst in the world for not playing much when I'm not rehearsing or gigging (and then get really worried how bad I've got as a result) but I tried learning Born To Run the other day as it had always stuck in my mind as probably one of those that has more to it than a casual listen suggests. It didnt disappoint !
