He seems to think it is a 1976 model.
It appears to be a 1976 model (unless you have a date stamp in the neck pocket or on the neck heel which contradicts this) because the serial number starts with 00 - "During the period from 1975-1977 Gibson used a transfer that had eight digit numbers, the first two indicate the year, 99=1975, 00=1976 and 06=1977, the following six digits are in the 100000 to 200000 range. MADE IN USA were also included on the transfer and some models had LIMITED EDITION also applied. A few bolt on neck instruments had a date ink stamped on the heel area." - from http://www.gibson.com/Files/downloads/bluebook/GibsonSERIALNUMBERS.pdf

My first Gibson bass was a 1978 G-3. Loved it, but moved it on in the interests of variety. Would have one back at some point, but can't do so right now. GLWTS.

  2. The Inevitable Teaspoons are a 5 piece R&B/blues/rock band hailing from Aberdeen(shire).

These videos are from our first public gig (only played private dos up to that point) at Cafe Drummond in Aberdeen on 12th April.

    Enjoy!

If you racked them up on the gigs, then yes, you'd qualify. IMO, of course.

Ha, that would be ridiculous. No chance of that, I can assure you. I like having a choice, I enjoy the variety, and I usually take a different bass to every gig/rehearsal so they all get used. It's on a whim, much like deciding what to wear. Am I a "collector" if I make sure they all get a play? I do make sure BTW - I keep a note of the number of gigs each one has done, because I'm sad like that ;)

I've just ordered a Gibson Bass .... Whoops sorry nothing to see here but tumbleweed and the sound the wind .... I'll get me coat
Tumbleweed? It'll be chased down with pitchforks and torches followed by a night in the stocks. Don't complain to me - oh, what I wouldn't give to be spat at in the face! Welcome aboard ;)

I never see the point of too many basses as that makes you more of a collector of them rather than a player of them.
Can you please quantify what "too many basses" is? I want to gauge how much of a poser you think I am.

  6. Ach, that's a drag. Sorry to hear it, but onwards and upwards. I can't say I've had any major disasters before, gearwise. We once tripped the main circuit breaker at a gig in a giant shed, it ended up being pretty cool - the lights went out, the powered instruments went dead but the drums and the horns kept on playing until power was restored then we just carried on :)

Maybe the're a duff batch finish-wise and this is why they are being punted out cheap. Anyway from what you say you've done, I reckon you'll have a pretty good sounding (and playing) bass.
They're not a duff batch, mine's fine, although I won't deny that I was worried. I love my older Gibsons but I've not had the best of luck with new ones.

Rather than the duff batch theory, it's more like it's time to clear out old, discontinued models to focus on the 2014 stuff. The NR T-bird isn't the only Gibson bass they've got on offer right now...

    Cool. How does it sound?

Tried it at band practice last night. Chunky, thick humbucker sound, a bit more aggressive than my other TB+ wearing basses (IV and Les Paul DC). Could hear myself no probs (Ampeg PF500 into an Ashdown 8x10), didn't need too much fettling with the EQ, it wasn't far off flat - rolled back the bass slightly so it wasn't too boomy.

I know you had pot woes on yours - value too low wasn't it? Maybe mine actually are 300K or whatever they're supposed to be. I don't find myself wanting for highs, it gives a nice cheeky pop if you want to get all percussive and there's a reasonable amount of burp from the bridge pickup. Me, I'm mostly a neck pickup guy, but it's nice to have the option.

+1 Convert it to passive and get rid of the battery problems forever. IMHO
If the pickup is an active EMG then it'll need to be replaced too if the OP wants to go fully passive with no batteries.

  10. There must be a wiring fault somewhere, that is spectacular drain. An average alkaline battery delivers 565mAh, so to drain in half an hour, you're pulling over an amp out of it! According to EMG specs - an EMG BTC control (2 band EQ) drains 600uA@9V, and a single EMG pickup draws around 80uA. That's MICROamps. You might have different stuff in your bass, but you see where I'm coming from here. Something's definitely not right.

Are you using good quality alkaline 9V batteries? Is the battery warm when you pull it out once it's finished?

Whoever buys it won't know (or care) what you paid for it.
Whoever buys it might not care, but there's a few folk on here who do care, will find out and will bust your chops about how much you paid for it. Not that it's any of their bloody business, but hey ho.
