If someone says something nice to you it seems only sensible to thank them - regardless of whether or not you agree with them. File under "mmm, this is delicious" and "thank you for the lovely gift, you really shouldn't have".

I always thank them for the compliment and thank them for coming and say how glad I am they enjoyed the show. If it's an actual bass player you sometimes get into a chinwag about gear etc. which is always good fun.

I may not be the world's best bass player (and don't suppose I ever will), but at that particular point in time I was the best bass player playing on that stage

Nothing to tell, you know of all my recent and in-progress transactions

I am selling my Yamaha BB614, having replaced it with a BB300 - I prefer to have a passive bass for my office/beater/backup/rough gig/festival bass.

It's black with matching headstock, PJ pickups, 3 band EQ (active only), rosewood board, 21 frets.

It's in fair condition - the body's not bad from the front but there's quite a lot of buckle rash in the back, nothing through to the wood though. The neck is in good shape, nice satin feel, somewhere between a P and a J neck. A small chip in the top of the headstock is visible, but only if you're looking for it. The stock innards have been replaced with an Artec SE-3 and a new Neutrik barrel jack socket fitted. I can supply the original Yamaha circuit if you want to put it back. A couple of the rubber O rings on the EQ knobs are missing.

I'm looking for £125 plus postage for it. Bank transfer preferred.

I think I got it from the states on eBay.

I'd be tempted to try and rescue that if I wasn't about to buy other stuff.

I replaced one with a lipstick strat pickup (whichever one was wound the most), looked really neat and sounded pretty good too:



And most recently, had a Fender single coil P pickup put in one.

Another thumbs-up for the HA3500. Used one for a few years with an 8ohm Ashdown ABM410T and then moved to a 4ohm Zoot ZB410. Excellent results with both, but the Zoot is slightly over half the weight of the Ashdown

I have never been in what I would describe as a "bass shop". All we get up here are music shops (read: mostly guitars) with the tiniest of nods to the fact that basses (and bassists) exist.

Aye, 'cos that's what the world needs - another butcher of precious rare guitars and basses. A Coronado Bass being parted out? For shame.

Also, I would steer clear of these sprung loaded jack plugs. The regular ones are fine and designed for the socket. The spring loaded ones apply extra pressure which really isn't necessary.

Set the volume, treble and bass controls on the instrument at 75-80% of their travel. There is plenty output, you don't need to set everything on 100% and it gives you some wiggle room should you need it (like for balancing the volume between series and parallel). Keep it passive - I really find the active thing (which is just a line boost, nothing more) rather pointless given how hot it is anyway.

According to your signature you use an Ampeg SVT3 Pro. I feel a bit silly and like I'm being cheeky and telling you how to operate your own amp, but I'll ask the questions anyway.

Have you tried using the -15dB pad switch (even if the L-2000 is in passive mode) to give you more travel on the gain control?
Have you set the gain while plucking strings as hard as you are likely to for your playing style so that it's just tickling the peak LED?

Also, resist the urge to fiddle with the bass! There are a lot of switches and stuff to play with but your best bet is to work out in practice/rehearsal what sounds best and then stick with it. I know it's rich coming from someone who modded mine to give me even more options (single coil mod giving me the inner coils) but my favourite sound is when I'm using both inner coils together (in a parallel fashion) - it's kind of like having a third pickup in between where the two actual ones are. It rarely moves from that setting.

Hope that helps, and please don't interpret the above as condescending, I'm only trying to help because these really are fantastic basses and I'd hate for your judgement of them to be coloured by a negative experience which might not be the bass's fault.

I haven't tried it, and I won't bother. Apart from a few things about it irritating me, there's no way it'll be superior to my RD Artist unless they stop making 9V batteries.

Just a wee bump to say that I have one of these and it's always done a good job for me.

There is no need to muddy the waters with the 2 point replacement. It is definitely the 3 point variant you want. It will fit, I've fit a Supertone to an Epiphone EB-0 and EB-3 as well as my RD Artist. It comes with two sets of bolts (metric/imperial I guess) to cover both Epiphones and Gibsons. The front bolt is not used on the Supertone - the unit covers it completely and is secured with the 2 side bolts.

The only gotcha I've encountered was actually on my Gibson - the insert for the front bolt was the same as the side ones, not the smaller diameter and therefore the Supertone didn't slide over the front but rested precariously on its edges. So I got the Dremel out and ground out the front slot in the base of the bridge a mm or so each side. Then it fit fine. Looking at the pictures of your bass though, it doesn't look like you'll have this problem.

Those are designed for Gibson Thunderbirds with directly mounted soapbars, not pickup rings and will need routing in this body to fit them.

I don't know what they sound like, I was just thinking of pickups which would fit more or less directly into what you have.

I bought my most recent Supertone second hand from someone on here. You could try Bass Parts Resource in the US - [url="http://www.basspartsresource.com/bridge_hipshots.htm"]http://www.basspartsresource.com/bridge_hipshots.htm[/url] - $114.99 posted, and the last time I got one this way it snuck under the taxman's nose. I wasn't going to point it out to them So that means (approx) £75 if you don't get done for tax, £90 if you do.

The only direct bridge replacement is the Hipshot Supertone bridge. I have one on my RD Artist.

It looks like they're using those guitar humbucker sized pickups. I had some in an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. I changed them out for a set of EMG-HB (active pickups). They fitted straight into the existing pickup rings. I think that there is the Rio Grande Pitbull pickup which should also fit right in - it's passive and coil-tappable if you wish. Also you can get TV Jones pickups in what they call "English Mount" which should also fit into Gibson guitar sized pickup rings.

Odd, isn't it? I don't use it much (the P pickup is too good ), but I always marvel at the bridge pickup in my BB614 - it's silent and easily keeps pace with the neck pickup. Just my opinion, of course.

I like basses, ergo I own multiple ones. I play whichever one takes my fancy at the time but I do make sure that they all get a run out (even my office bass gets out into the real world sometimes) and it's not a chore because I like playing all of them. I have no time for agonising about "which bass sounds right" - they all sound like basses - so I just pick one up and get on with it.

In short, I don't worry about it at all.
