1. Lower models such as 300s-400s were passive in the 90s. My first proper bass was SR370 and it was passive with pj pickups.
My sr600 was active with 3band eq + active pj pickups but I don't remember the production date.

2. The difference I am aware of is the scale lenght. Series I has 34" scale lenght while series II is 35" scale. Other differences such as preamp and
design of the body is explained below by ikay. Another model is TRB P (not newer Ps with soapbars) which is more different from TRB I and II.

TRB P
Neckthru
34" scale
PJ pickups + piezo
Better quality wood with top woods on body and veneers on the neck
Better quality hardware especially the bridge

TRB II
Bolt-on
35"scale
Soapbars
Ash body with 3 piece maple neck (if I remember correctly)

I never had I or P series so I cannot compare them but had II series twice in the past. They are great for the money when you think about their prices in the second hand market. It was my first 5 stringer and that bass made it very easy to switch from 4 strings to 5 strings due to 18 or 19 mm string spacing. The only reason I don't have one now is that they are 35" scale.

You cannot go wrong with TRB II (especially for the price) if you are ok with 35" scale lenght. It is very versatile and well made bass which will be enough for almost every gig/concert. Cons that come to mind are:
- heavy
- hiss when you turn the treble up
- no active/passive

But as I stated you cannot go wrong with TRBII for the price. As for the TRB I or P other BCers may give you some ideas.

Cheers

His own Pickup is made with Ferrite magnets and a lot of winding. Hence the more kind of aggressive sounding bass. Just for the story he made his 1st pickup in Poland when he was about 15 or 16.

All the other brands you mentioned are (to my knowledge) Alnico ... which will be much smoother.

Yep, the Maruszczyks in my LPB are hotter and more aggressive than the Haussels in my 3TSB. Both different flavours of loveliness.

Thanks for sharing your opinions guys and for a short history lesson :) What you guys said confirms what I know about maruszczyk PU's.

Wateroftyne, did you have any chance to compare Haeussels with other P PU's other than Maruszczyks?

Just for the info, I am after fat, round, smooth sound for motown, reggae etc. rather than aggressive, edgy sound. So Maruszczyk's stock PUs are not the best choice I guess.

in my opinion playability is just as good if not nicer than some of the "big boys"... but that's just personnal.
I have no doubt about the quality but as you mentioned playability is just personal. How is the standard neck profile on Jakes?

4. I am thinking of getting a precision bass and a jake is one of the options. It is a safe bet to go with Maruszczyk since I own one and already know the quality. Just simple passive with one p pickup. So, my questions to those who have experince with Jakes are that:

1- How do you describe the sound of maruszczyk's own p pickups?

2- Did you have any chance to compare them with other p pickups used by Adrian such as delano, haeussel, aguilar (my frog has bassculture humbuckers and they are great but I don't know if they have p pickup) etc. or any other p pickup you had experince with such as bartolinis, lindy fralins, fender vintage ones etc.?

3- How do you compare the playability and the sound of jakes to other p basses such as fender, lakland, sandberg etc.?

I know I can ask these questions to Adrian and I am sure I will get an honest opinion but I would like to know what are the opinions of those who have experince with jakes.

Cheers,

GC

Have you thought of contacting Bass Direct?

I am in the same situation earlier, difference being its the yellow lee sklar sig dingwall on The gallery. Asked the shop directly and found out it went to US. :-(

as above, I suggest that you go ask BD. :-)

Asking to the shop directly was my initial thought but I didn't want to bother them. So I decided to check here first to see if they were bought by any BCer. Will check with the shop too.

What Owen said. Personally, I like a genuine worn bass, so buckle rash, worn off paint and battle scars wouldn't bother me at all.

+1

I don't know if refinish devalue a vintage bass or guitar but I personally prefer original paint.

I never got that far, that would be good to ask, but he has stopped talking to me now, I think I asked too many questions!

Out of interest, what's the normal response time for an email to these guys? I sent one with a query about a custom build about a week ago, with no response yet.

The same thing happened a while ago, I mentioned it on here and got a response after that.

I wrote an email, got a reply the next day, sent a reply, got another reply the next day, sent another reply got 3 replies the same day, last question, haven't heard anything for a few days now.

He is very responsive to emails and facebook messages usually. I exchanged a few emails/fb messages with him last week and remember him stating that he will be out of the office for about a week.

8. This used to be mine and I can tell that the weight makes it very comfortable for long gigs and it has one of the best jazz necks I have ever played.

Is this a US or Jap model
Roadworns are Mexican but they are as good as US ones.

9. Andy is a great guy not only to deal with but also chat and share opinions about anything. I traded my roadworn jazz with his sandberg. Everything went really well. The bass arrived very well packed and as he described which is in mint condition. It was great pleasure to deal and chat with him. He became a friend to me :)
Buy and sell with confidence...
Thanks Andy

10. I believe the hardest thing to get used to is string spacing when you switch from 4 to 5 stringer. My first 5 string was yamaha TRB5 II which has similar string spacing to 4 string and it made getting used to process very easy. So I suggest you checking them out. They go for very low prices used. My only problem with TRB5 II was it being 35" scale lenght. Older TRBs have 34" scale but they are bit more expensive used. Another good and cheap option would be Yamaha BB415. I used one for some time and it feels very comfortable.

Ah I think I really need to seriously consider one of these. The problem is the amount of options is baffling!

Had the same problem and ended up buying one in stock. Simple :D

I didn't get it, purchased a Hartke LH500 instead. This makes noise via Warwick 1x15 & 2x10.

Will you let us know how do you get on with LH500?
