1. Hey folks,
Been playing this tune at a few jazz jams lately and really dig the vibe that bob james gives it but decided to go for the D'angelo version. I had a bash at recording the bass and firing the meoldy on top and can say it's a good way to really get into a song and understand how the melody fits with the chords as well as giving you a good basis for improvising on.
Anyhoo, let me know what you think!
Tech talk:
Bassline was played on my Iceni Zoot Funkmeister classic J 5 string
Melody was played on my Lakland Darryl Jones 5 String.
Both signals were split and I recorded on direct from my Avalon U5 and I mic'd up my Aguilar DB750 and Epifani UL410.
I recorded into garageband for quickness with loops etc and did some very light tweaking. Both takes are unedited.
Cheers!
Craig

2. Hello,
Along with my Sadowsky Metro, I'm also selling my Warwick Dolphin, purchased from Chrisdbass in here about 4 years ago. As far as I can tell Warwick are no longer manufacturing these basses and they are only available as a custom shop option making these a bit more sought after now. The playability on this instrument is fantastic, with a great feeling neck and smooth action. The tone is equally pleasing with growly mids, subby lows and smooth highs. The bass can be operated in both active and passive modes and has a 'coil tap' option which splits the bridge humbucker enabling it to act like a jazz bass with two J pups. I've used it on various sessions and it was also my main bass when I did cruise ship work in the caribbean and it has always stepped up to the mark.
The only issue with the bass is a small piece of plastic missing from the nut, but this has no effect on the playability of the bass. I really love this bass and only reason I'm selling is I'm moving to Australia for a year!

3. Hello,
Up for sale is my Sadowsky Metro RV5 in black. It has been retro fitted with the Sadowsky VTC (vintage tone control) additioniol tonal capabilities in both active and passive modes, the original pots will be included in the sale. I bought this bass off here about 2 years ago and has been my main bass up untill I purchased a Lakland Darryl Jones 5 String in Nov 09 which just felt better for me.

As you probably know Sadowskys are revered in the bass world for their immense tone, and this one is no exception. It comes with Sadowsky 'soft hard case'.
I'm looking for £1100 ono plus shipping, or you are welcome to come try it out and collect it from Glasgow.
Thanks for looking,
Craig

4. I can heartily recommend it from both a social/travel perspective and a musical one.
I did two contracts for royal caribbean onboard the two largest cruise ships in the world at the time Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the seas. Basically you need to be a good player with decent reading skills. It also really helps to be a people person as you are living in each others pockets for the duration of you contract! You need to be pretty confident in most musical styles, I was playing in the orchestra so we we playing for:
the production shows - musical numbers, pop songs etc;
big band sets - count basie etc
cocktail bar stuff - jazz
backing guest entertainers - probably the best bit, I played for Mickey Dolenz, the Osmonds and the Drifters...not mega I know but it's a welcome change!
Go for it!

5.
Hub also plays the bass in The Roots, right?

Haha, stoncecoldbass' band did not do much to make the version they're playing different from the original live version!!!!! But great band, cd and song(s) IMHO.
That was actually the whole point of the band and the gigs! To replicate those fantastic arrangements as closely as possible and see what can be learnt from doing so. These guys are at the top of the tree and having transcribed all the bass parts I understand why...
