A bow is VERY subjective and personal. Its the thing I have the most difficulty explaining

And yet you've explained it very well! The bow as amplifier is a very instructive illustration, thanks Bloopdad.

Because I'm an almost complete beginner (couple of months each on a cello and HB EUB), I put all the horrendous screeches down to me, not the bow. I'm thinking it will be a while before I can discern the shortcomings of my bow, so will put off upgrading till then.

Is that a reasonable idea? And how would you all rate something like this?-

Very much appreciate the time you've all taken to reply in such detail; it makes this 'voyage of discovery ' less scary. Cheers

  3. Thanks to all of you for your input: it has shaped my thinking.

I saw Ash's Selmer for sale on here. He's only an hour from me, it's been well played in and set up, so it came home with me.

Still pondering lessons (I'm a diehard cheapskate), but YT is proving very helpful indeed ('Discover Double Bass' in particular)

Beginning to understand the need for a different mentality in the approach.

I need educating in the matter of a bow. A bow is a bow is a bow, no? (a stick and some horsehair) What does a £1200 bow have over a £120 one, for example?

The above is an ignorant comment, I know, so please enlighten me!

    Cheers, Sean

  4. This is the second Ashula I've owned; they're just a wonderful instrument. Full specs are on this page:

    https://ibanez.fandom.com/wiki/SRAS7

This is a 2018 model. It's in immaculate condition, living in it's own custom hard case. Annoyingly, it does have one small scratch (pictured, image 13).

I have it strung with D'Addario piccolo's, tuned D G C F (fretless side G C F). This gives a really great contrast between the crisp fretted notes and the soft bloom of the fretless. Works great for ambient stuff. The piccolo's accept a wide tuning range; I have had it tuned in fifths all the way through. This made 10th chords sound awesome (for example).

I will include the (unused) D'Addario 'nomal' strings in the sale. The preamp is very flexible- turning down the bass on the fretted side can give an 8 string doubling kind of sound. Bad explanation there. Short version is, it really rewards experimentation.

The Aerosilk piezo system is one of Ibanez's greatest achievements, in my opinion. (My Portamento and Aerium basses are just fantastic). And the purpleheart fingerboard works really well with it.

    TRADE OFFER: any 1982 bass!

Particularly interested in Ibanez Roadster, Peavey T40, G&L L2000, Aria, Westone...

    Enough marketing. Pictures:

  5. Just wondering where to look for my first double bass. A cheap one, to test the waters. Saw a battered old school one on Reverb, but the seller withdrew it.

I'm fairly sure I'll continue with it, as it's the sound I'm always aiming for in my fretlesses, and a basic, well used example would let me get going with a clear conscience!

Looking on here, eBay, Reverb and Gumtree. Anything I've missed?

    Cheers, guys.

  6. Happy days indeed. I bought a set of Trubass strings when I first got into fretless playing, and hated them. Really hated them- stiff, dull thudding.

Having been on a pilgrimage for the double bass tone without actually having said double bass, I tried them again, and they really do the trick- you have to attack them like you would an upright, which makes sense, I guess...

  7. Thanks again, chaps.

The connections between the PCB and the bridge plate are sound, as are the wires from the plate to the actual piezo elements. The bass working well with my Thomastiks tells me it must be the nylon coating.

SO...what I did was this:PXL_20220801_150200642.thumb.jpg.628d7f84f2e2d0359eae1f51f90de275.jpgPXL_20220801_150200642.thumb.jpg.628d7f84f2e2d0359eae1f51f90de275.jpgAnd it works! The copper tape is connecting the ball end of the string to the piezo element.

I will tidy it up (and hope I don't blow myself up), but I quite like the diy look...

Thanks for your input, I probably would have given up without it
