  1. I sold an Ampeg SVT 3 Pro for my TB500 - I'd be quite happy to swap it for your AD200?? :D

It's true the 12AX7's break up a bit early. I got some Mullard 12AT7wa's for mine and the headroom is immense now and the gain break up much more controllable. Never had the volume above 3 live and gain @ 12o'clock.
Same pre section as the AD200 mate so, you won't do much better...

  2. I'm not posting this for bragging rights, to be honest I find it all a bit much to take in at the minute!

BUT, the band I play in have been added to the bill this morning for Download!

I'm kind of in shock as we're a new band (of old gezzers!) and things have really taken off very quickly.

We're opening the 4th stage on the Saturday and.....that's all I know so far.

I'm a KISS fan but, can't be ever so slightly disappointed that I'm not playing the same day as them; as Ace Frehley is playing on the day we are so, Win-Win!

As soon as it was confirmed I started thinking about rig, changeovers, set ups, what we're allowed to take (free passes for the Sunday....) etc, etc.

So genuinely, my question is has anyone played there or had any experience with the Download set up from band POV?

  3. This is a great amp, ordered for me direct from Ampeg by The Bass Centre in 2006.
I had full set of JJ's put in it in 2011 when it was serviced.
Never an ounce of bother with it and was sorry to see her go when Paul bought it.
Buy with confidence, Paul's a great bloke.

  4. *ahem*
My Avatar makes me slightly obvious to my allegiance but, I agree his technique leaves a lot to be desired and this clip highlights that profusely.

Live however, given the fact that at 65yrs old, wearing 20lbs of costume perched upon 7" platforms for 2+ hours a night, singing, playing bass, breathing fire, spillting blood and flying 50ft up into the lighting rig & been doing that for 40+ years in KISS .... I can forgive the old codger for being rather sloppy here and thank him for being the sole reason for me playing bass!
For those unfamiliar with the work of Mr $immon$ - have a listen to Goin' Blind on Hotter Than Hell (1974) and more recently Russian Roulette from Sonic Boom (2009). He can play!!

The one thing I took from the clip was, no matter of the fame, $$$$, platinum albums etc., he's still willing to learn!

  5. Forgive me - pure self-indulgence but, my bass sound in 1992 is my fave if I'm honest.
My PBass straight through a cranked Laney DP150 into a MAJ 4x10 - 2 mics in the sound room and a DI blend - even a wah-wah solo in the middle. :P

I uploaded this from a digital recording of the only cassette I've got of this.

  6. I have to disagree with is sounding muddy. Bright as a button IMO.
Mine's an older version and I put in some Mullard 12AT7-AW's purely to give me some cleaner headroom.
When I opened it up it had JJ 12AX7's in so, I don't think they are throwing any old valves in.

Cabs have a definite impact with various voicing etc, so it may be a rhetorical question with the switch from the Eden to the Ashdown?

  7. Re earlier suggestions - Shout - The Disturbed version is great live. Dropped the tuning to D & our guitarist had a great Lesley Speaker effect for the verses. It went down great cos everyone knows the song.

For me on a purely self-indulgent trip - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden would be the one I will always want to do.

  8. If this was priced midway between the OTB's and the AD, I could see the point(ish).
If I had a choice, an AD all the way.
Until that choice is available, my OTB500 is doing a great job.

Then again, it could be the best amp ever, that no one's heard yet?

  9. I use 3 basses live due to different tunings. The rest of the band moan that I should get a 5er but, I hate them and there are a lot of open string tunings we use + I'm cack at transposing! It's easier for me and they just have to put up with it! ;)
