  1. "felt dead"
don't know what that means. you've got set up (Alembics are quite friendly in this area), string choice, pickups.

when I got mine (used 5 string Persuader, quite like a spoiler) the set up and strings were way wrong for me. a bit of time and the thing is just plain great.
the active pickups have incredible range - but I generally prefer the passive ones on my VC. but they are different animals by design.

edit - these are medium scale, and at least with mine, I think it favors a solo bass style more than a keeping down the bottom thing.

placement not right for slap? that would be a good thing, slap bass should be discouraged :)

  2. the gentleman could compare the recomended box sizes at www.eminence.com with the size of his current cabinet - while looking over the frequency range/spl charts for 10" speakers. check the PA speakers too - they used to be the bass speakers.

there should be something there that will serve his purposes well, and sound better than what came in the box.

  3. thanks for listening, T.P. I was quite pleased with that little middle guitar bit.
yeah, others would be nice, but difficulties finding & keeping them is what led to recording solo in the forst place. for better or worse, I get more done on my own - even allowing for learning time.

  4. St.James Infirmary - Eric & Animals, Every One of Us. perhaps not their biggest selling record. but if it's an open mic jam, Year of the Guru would be a better choice as it's a) more fun and :) has three guitars going.
  5. my 5 is a 33 - originally a high b, the prior owner restrung it/cut the nut for low B.
as noted above, tune your (is your existing 4 a 33"? - if it's a 34 and you are happy, why go shorter?) 33" four down to B and see if you like it. I expect you will need a 135 or so to be reasonably happy with the results - and that you'll be thinking a 34 or 35 would be preferable sonically. yes, scale length only makes a difference on playability for the low notes, but as that is why you are going for a 5 - it could be an issue for you. but if you are just going to go "boom" on occasion - playability isn't much of an issue anyway.
choice of woods & number of laminations to make a stable neck with a profile/length that YOU find comfortable ....isn't that the point of a custom build? if you are OK with a 34, the right profile for a 34" 5 string shouldn't be an issue.

  6. there were two versions of the "originals", one with 4x88 and a 6x34 version. owners of the "real" hiwatts consider either of those preferable to the new ones due to the quality of components (partridge transformers) and build quality (military spec). it seems an oldie is more reliable than a new one.
hiwatt guys figure there is nothing better - which justifies the prices they happily pay.

  7. :) worldwide internet radio debut occurs on "Troys Room", KCLAFM.com, which is broadcast Thursday (tomorrow) at 3:30 Pacific Standard Time, which is 10:30 or 11:30 pm over there.
of course anyone who is interested can hear more on the link below - but I'm pretty jazzzed about it.
