The trouble is that being a musician is quite an uncertain profession at the best of times and I would imagine that it would be considered a 'high risk' and therefore attract high premiums. Therefore, many musicians (even pretty successful ones) find that they do not have enough insurance when they need it.

The guy who played lead guitar on Billie Jean (forget his name but a well paid session player on a massive hit on the bestselling album of all time) died from a heart attack because he was turned away from one hospital as he didn't have insurance at the time and didn't make it to a hospital that would take him. Phil Kennemore (the bassist in Y&T and a lovely bloke who I had the pleasure of meeting) died from cancer leaving his wife pretty much penniless as the insurance that he did have didn't cover his treatment.

What some of the little tory boys here don't realise is that some of these guys were not in 'regular' employment with the medical schemes and reasonably low premiums that most office workers would enjoy and the uneven nature of their work would make it difficult to maintain a decent level of cover, even if, at times, they may have paid a out a fortune in tax (depending on the state that they lived in)!

As bad as the NHS is becoming these days, at least that safety net still exists for those who do not fit the norms of employment....

  4. Sad news about Chuck; met him at a demo he did for PJB amps some years ago and what a lovely guy! I know for sure that I will be playing till I can't - its the way of life for many of us full time players and yes, I'm lucky that should the crap ever hit the fan I do have some bits and bobs to sell on! Anyone wanna Fendah?

  5. Allo! What you really want is a set of Taurus III's - I was very lucky just prior to Christmas in sourcing a set complete with flightcase, they simply destroy buildings, literally! Did a rock function gig up in Derby a couple of weeks ago and suddenly it looked as though some builders were knocking the plaster off of the ceiling each time I hit a note!!! There's me thinking, where's that dust coming from!?

I also use (now kind of spare!) a set of PK-5's hooked up to a Nord Lead rack module and with careful tweakage, you can almost produce a Taurus sound but having AB'ed them in my studio, there is something about the Moog which just cannot be emulated. There are some clips on Youtube featuring the Minitaur but for whatever reason, there is no demo of the Taurus sound!? Sounds good though!

    Cheers! Nick

  6. Hi Kev!

I actually got to play the Calibas Twin when I bought your Calibas! It sounded incredible, almost like a Moog bass tone but weighed a ton! I think it sold on Ebay! Hope all well with you - fancy swapping the Calibas for a rather superb OW??!

    Cheers! N x

  7. It is a shame and had things worked out differently, it would have been my shop one day! However, the shop has faced massive competition from the internet etc but all is not lost, there is a brand new shop open already in Orton Southgate called The Guitar Lounge and a certain local pro bass player with at least 68 basses has opened a small but perfectly formed bass shop on the premises, where he teaches the noble art as well....I wonder who it could be?!!

    Take care fans!

    Nick

  8. Allo!

A fine bass! It looks to me like a fairly early model, reason being the body edge has the older style `Fender' radius as opposed to the deeper `curved' rad that most Jaydees have - I would hazard a guess that its from 1982 or '83! Knobs on JDs vary as John would chop and change to suit, plus owners tend to modify them too! The serial number will allow a date to be ascertained!

    Keep it funkae!

Nick (Mick, you are most welcome to visit me anytime apart from Mondays!! Give me a bell though just in case! 07961 880770!)
