  1. Hey folks!

I'm considering buying an isolated power supply for my pedal board, as my Boss ODB-3 seems to have a lot of background noise (not to do with pedal settings, just a high pitched noise) which I believe is due to me running it off a daisy chain supply.

Just wondered if any of the 'budget' ones are any good or not? Surely an isolated power supply is an isolated power supply?

    Thanks,

Such a great photo! Lovely to see your lad looking so happy with his bass, long may it continue and I wish him much fun and success in the future x

Thanks for this! He's absolutely flying with it, he spends so much time playing it's incredible! Not even a year in, and I think he'll be better than me soon 😅

Got him his first proper bass at the guitar and bass show back in March, a Dave Ellefson 5-string Jackson, and he's wanting a new bass for his 16th next month! Here we go..... #GAS

  3. I hadn't been on BC for a while, but caught up on some stuff yesterday, including this thread. You guys inspired me to take my Sandberg out tonight, and what a joy it is to play! Hadn't gigged it for quite a while, but will try to more now.

Definitely got plenty of thump and authority out of it, sounded absolutely monster! 😎👌❤️PXL_20250802_184854557.thumb.jpg.fa08fd2f01ccd9e492a045c4c0166072.jpg

  4. The fantastic Markbass NY151 cabs, about the most compact 1x15" bass cabs you can buy. Fast, tight and deep, these cabs sound incredible, and two of them together sounds monstrous!

Each cab is 400w rms 8 ohms.

One is essentially brand new, only bought a few months ago and has had very little use, made in Indonesia.

The other is an original Italian one, still in great condition and sounds superb.

£250 each, or both for £450. Reasonably priced for a quick sale.

    Collection from Hereford

  5. Well I think I've peaked today.....

I saw another of the old GR410+ cabs come up for sale, didn't think I'd see one again.... So it's now mine!

The one I took a punt on a few years ago is by far the best sounding and most powerful cab I've ever used, and I've had some GREAT cabs in my time!

I present the 1400w 8x10" GR Bass stack of doom! 😈

    Overkill? Yes.

    Fun? Absolutely! 😎👌

Just got in from a rehearsal with my classic rock band, using my new Sandberg California TT SL. Went well though as it’s a jazz bass configuration I struggled a bit with the sound as am so used to a Precision type sound. However at the end the band said how good they thought the sound had been, with better separation on the instruments as my bass was lower/deeper. Was a dream to play though, and being 6lbs it was so easy on my back, don’t even feel like I’ve been at a band practice, was def a good purchase.

You'll probably have to start afresh with your amp EQ settings etc, I'm confident you'll get it to work though! My TT5 passive sounds massive when I dial it in 👌

This is exactly where i am at the moment. Trying to decide between B2 Four, B6 & GT-1B after years of a B3. Good to hear you’re happy with yours and the choice you made!

I would only be using it mainly for preamps/amp sims and was leaning towards the B6 because of being able to have more control of the IRs and cab sims. But, as I only use a few effects the B6 may be overkill.

Also leaning towards staying with zoom as I’m familiar rather than the Boss

I think I’m leaving it in the hands of the gods and see what comes available at the right price first!

Yeah that was a deciding factor for me too, my familiarity with how zoom gear works. Where are you based? You're welcome to come and try mine if you're anywhere near Hereford (doubtful, nothing's near Hereford🤣).

i got zoom b3, want to "upgrade"... b2 fpur or b6...or? thx

I had a B3 forever, decided to upgrade to the B2 Four and have been happy so far. It's the most comparable model in terms of functionality, although I miss some of the effects that were in the B3. It's good though, and has some good improvements, the dedicated bypass footswitch is great.

The B6 was not a consideration for me, I only use a handful of effects really.

I was curious about the Boss GT1-B too, but never got to try one out.

  9. I like 15's 😊

Got a pair of Markbass NY151's recently, and I'm really impressed, they sound tight, deep and punchy, yet still nicely articulate.

Speaker diameter doesn't guarantee any particular sort of sound, it's all about the drivers used and the cabinet design.

  10. Just bought a GR Bass amp from Gareth, he was very honest and upfront about condition, and the transaction was smooth (courier incompetence notwithstanding 😅). It arrived unbelievably well packaged, and sounds super! Very nice chap too, wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again. 😊👍

  11. I've been working towards somewhat of a 'vision' I've had for a while, and have finally got there!

Let's get a couple of things out of the way first:

    1) Yes, I know it's probably unnecessary.

    2) This is my cellar/music room, a tatty time capsule to the late 80's/early 90's, and is a way down the renovation list.

    3) Yes, I may be having a mid life crisis of sorts. I also bought a Red Arrows leather jacket the other day.

I've had my GR Bass 4x10" for a couple of years now, and love it deeply. It's by far the best single cab I've had in the past almost 30 years, amongst some great cabs. I'd been getting to think I might like a GR Bass Amp too... At the same time, I was thinking it would be cool to be able to run more cabs, but the GR410+ is 4 ohm... naturally then, the One 1400 caught my eye!

I decided that a new one was more than I could run to, and there didn't seem to be used ones around, but then last week I spotted @franzbassist selling one! After some discussion it was a done deal, and it arrived today! (Unbelievably well packaged I might add, I'm not sure if Gareth was trying to protect the amp or save himself a tip run 🤣).

I've only had a brief play around with it this evening, but so far I'm loving it! It's clean and clear, but not clinical. Natural sounding, with a very flexible EQ section, yet still simple to use. Lots of oomph, but also great definition and dynamics. Very pleased!

In addition, I've had a penchant for 15's again in the last few years, and have been experimenting with a couple I picked up pretty cheap (one from the fantastic @vmaxblues). They were great, but I was fixated on a specific form factor, and wanted two cabs the same. So in the past few weeks I've picked up a pair of Markbass NY151's.

So I now have 3 rig options:

One 1400 with the GR410+, this will be my main rig:

    PXL_20250425_201924643.thumb.jpg.bb9ce8ae7112960322bab0a6c69bdaee.jpg

The pair of NY151's, pictured here with my backup amp, a LMII. This configuration will be great for stages with little space:

    PXL_20250423_175232732.thumb.jpg.a722f820bb3a1d44d5ca2b5a140af98d.jpg

And then we have the behemoth.... The 1400w, 4x10" + 2x15" monster! This should do well for the outdoor shows in the summer! 😎👌

    PXL_20250425_200905235.thumb.jpg.226bbf65fe02ddb9df83ce99db0c8e61.jpg

Sounds absolutely phenomenal! Not just ridiculously loud and gutsy, but REALLY good sounding! I did wonder if something sounded a bit funny for a moment, but then I realised it was just the house disintegrating 🤣🤣🤣.

I often find at outdoor gigs (using only our PA - mainly only for vocals), the bass gets a bit lost, whereas the 100w valve half stacks/stacks seem to project well across a field no problem. I'm hoping this will help balanced things up a bit. 😉

Sorry for the long post, but I've been working towards this for some time, and I'm over the moon that I've got there in the end!

Hmmm I'm not so sure you know. I wouldn't necessarily use the word magic but I feel there's definitely a "formula" Warwick cooked up to create that sound. Obviously I don't know for sure but I've yet to hear anything else sound close to a Thumb. Those brass bell frets may even be a contributing factor and wood and fretboard choices. I could be wrong of course.

Without wanting to get into 'the debate that shall not be debated', on a solid body electric instrument, the tone all comes from the pickups, electronics and strings, and of course the player/technique.

Now, as a caveat to that, we have 5 senses which all work in conjunction to form perception of our surroundings. Whilst the wood itself might not contribute to the actual tone we hear, the haptic feedback we receive through our hands and bodies from the instrument helps to form our 'perception' of the tonality of the instrument. IIRC back in my Warwick playing days, they always felt very lively and vibrant due to the very hard, dense tropical hardwood used.

I would almost guarantee though that if you put the same pickups, in exactly the same position, and preamp and strings on any other bass, with the setup the same, you wouldn't tell the difference on a recording.

  13. Thumb 5 BO was my first 'good' quality bass. Tried it on a shop around '97 and fell in love with the sound, and the looks and feel..... Sitting down. I preserved with it for about 5 years in amongst other basses, and then decided I couldn't get on with 5 strings. What I realised later, after playing lots of other 5 strings, was it was the ergonomics of that particular bass. With such a small body but a fairly heavy neck, it was prone to neck dive. The worst part of the ergonomics though is that because of the body proportions, first fret feels a country mile away, stood with it on a strap! Feels like it's a 48" scale length! 🤣

    That sound though....

I swapped mine for a 4 string corvette, which still sounded and looked great, but was much more ergonomic.

There's no 'magic' about them tonally though, it's just down to the pickups, preamp, and location of the pickups. If you did the same thing in any bass shape it would sound essentially the same. 🤷
