  1. I'm pretty nooby on bass gear having dabbled on other instruments over the years but am currently wondering how the neck profile of my (older type USA-made) MM SUB Sterling model would be characterised?

    I have a Squier CV Precision - this feels deeper, wider, and seems to have a much wider string spacing. This seems to fit the descriptions I hear of 'big' necks on Ps.

    I have a Sqiuer CV Jazz - this neck is the most nondescript of the 3 - nothing wrong with it, do we know if the Squier CV necks accurately ape any particular J type neck?

    The one that really interest me is the MM Sub Sterling (again it's one of the older matt finished ones - can't find much info online) - this neck has a narrower spacing than the P but seems to be deeper in the hand than the Squier Jazz and has a wonderful rounded shape that just fits beautifully in the hand. It's so comfortable I'm wondering if it is a distinctively MM thing, or copying something else or ?

    I don't suppose any knowledgable bod has had one and can fill me in?

    They are indeed amazing - I keep going to delete this thread then realise it's either this (and other pedals) or a bass that needs to go, and on balance it should probably be this.

  4. This is my EBMM USA SUB Stirling, which as you probably already know is a different beast to the current "Stirling by Music Man SUB" range.

    These USA-made original SUB series were discontinued so the story goes because they were robbing the main models of sales.

    The Stirling model has active 3-band EQ, a matte blue finish and a treadplate-effect pickguard.

    Condition-wise this one has some marks on the back of the neck (that do not affect playability or distract), marks on the back of the headstock where it has been rested against a wall (I guess - I'm the 2nd owner) and the battery compartment catch is missing, but it is the work of a mere moment to open it with something suitably pointy :-)

    It comes with straplocks and an ABS hard case and has just been restrung with D'Addario Nickelwound 45-105 strings, and intonated.
    It's set up with an easy, low action (my much more experienced gig-weary friend confirmed it's extremely playable) and sounds when picked like the best rock bass sounds you've heard, and when slapped like a MM should.

    I have found the eq to be really easy to use - can dial in a lovely pseudo-old-school passive sound by upping the low and pulling the high back a little (which I have discovered is where my heart lies hence the sale) and all the percussive-scooped, and rocky-mid-boosted sounds are in there too.

    Typing that I stopped to have a play and wondered why I am putting it up for sale.
    Then I remembered I just promised someone to buy their Jazz and that my wife will have my wotsits for a neckace if I can't point at an outbound instrument when that one arrives!

  5. A bit leftfield as it requires additional expense (but on something nice :-) ) I have a PT Nano that fits in the 'Guitar Tick' and attaches to my Mono (guitar) gigbag - so one hand for instrument and board.

    If you had a Mono gigbag one lot could go in a Nano attached to it, the other in your hand... ?

    The other benefit of 2 small boards is everything is on the "front" row - a particular benefit if you also sing and can't look down too often

  6. Yes - just drag the amp out of the signal chain.
    If you're going to do it that way it's probably cheapest to get the free version and just add the effects packs you want rather than buy the pro version although it's on offer at the minute so maybe look carefully at the package prices first)

    my early bass fumblings have led me to think I'd like a J-type - flexibility of sound and playability of the couple I've tried (a Classic Vibe Aquier in a shop, and my friend's Sandberg Electra TT - the latter being wonderfully light too)

    Now I don't know what's what really - as i where the value lies. I'll fund it from selling-on the USA SUB Sterling I blind-bought as a first bass (I now also have a Classic Vibe Precision so it won't leave me bassless to do so) and may find some other funds to chip in too. And if this thread leads me to think there's a reason to do so I may save a bit more for something 'nicer' than ££ the SUB will fetch.

    So my only thoughts thus far:[list]
    [*]Aware the Squier CV Jazz seems to be good
    [*]Aware the USA Fender Jazz is the 'real thing'
    [*]The Sandberg Electra seemed good (although I'm no expert)

    What other mid-range things might I look out for?

    wondering if anyone out there has the CD for this book and would be prepared to part with it? Before anyone assumes I ripped the book off the net or anything nefarious, see below a pic of me in my dilemma : the cupboard behind is where the book was, and the CD should be. But no. I have children - you can probably work out the rest of what might have befallen it as well as I can. Which isn't that well, clearly.
