1. I think it's a pretty good idea as long as you have the time to commit to do it. Having seen pictures of your refinishes on the forum, you certainly seem to have a knack for it! Also, when it comes to pricing, make sure that you do not "underpay" yourself either or it may become a real chore.

I may be able to afford to have a claret and blue Jazz bass after all.....

  2. I quite like the tab in Bass Player, its about the only reason to pick it up these days unless you want to look at lots of adverts. I now buy BP only if there is a tab or interview I want to read, whereas I'll get BGM every month. I think BGM has improved immensely over the past few months.

  3. I have two MIM Jazz basses and they are both great. One was bought from new and the other second hand, but both have fantastic necks ang great natural tone. In both cases however, I have replaced the pickups (DS Hots in one and Wizard 84s in the other). For an unused 2008 the price seems reasonable given that they seem to be about £450 for a 2009 in most places. Go on, get a Jazz, you know you want to!

  4. I have the Marshall MB4210 which I use regularly with a couple bands and it has never let me down. I sometimes use the matching 1x15 cab for gigs, not for volume but just because it annoys the guitarists! I do know some people have had problems with theirs, but touchwood, mine has been fine.

The reason I chose it over the Ashdown is I just felt it was more versatile and actually had a nicer tone in my opinion. Just to put that into context, I am not an Ashdown hater, and did not think it was "wooly", I just felt (in my opinion) that the Marshall had a better "rock" tone.

See if you can find a local dealer and try them both, it's the only way to be sure!

  5. Never had a problem with mine in the 18 months I've had it so far. Sometimes gets a little warm if backed up against a wall reducing air flow through the fan, but no reliability issues. I did get it checked over at the Marshall factory about 9 months ago after Al Heeley mentioned a potential trouble spot (overheating and cutting out) as I live 20 minutes away from Bletchley, but there was no problem with mine. Great tone using the blend facility with plenty of oomph to cut through against two distorted guitars.

  6. Shimming isn't difficult, I did it after fitting Gotoh bridges to my Jazz basses. Here is a thread with an easy to follow guide: How To Shim A Neck. Filing the barrels would be 1) more difficult and 2) permanent, whereas shimming is easy to take out later if you so wish.

  7.
I think I even read somewhere that one band had used audience noise from another band's live album (I can't remember who did this, one of the eighties hair metal bands) and recorded the music in the studio. I would think that would be illegal, wouldn't it?
I believe that was "Live Like A Suicide" by Guns N' Roses, later re-issued as part of the Lies album.

For my tuppence worth, "Live After Death" by Iron Maiden is one of the best live albums around. Martin Birch said they recorded all four dates at Long Beach Arena, USA and the same at Hammersmith Odeon, UK and just used the best takes of each song and categorically stated no overdubs were used.

  8. Never had a problem with my Marshall but I have heard some others have had issues, mostly to do with overheating. I also tend to run it with the extension cab, so maybe that helps?

I think I would have got the Marshall repaired under warranty or exchanged for a new one, especially as you say you liked the sound you were getting and was happy with the output level.

  9. I believe all of the earliest MIM production Jazz Basses had that style scratchplate. They also poplar bodies rather than the current alder spec.

If I didn't have 2 already, I'd have taken your arm off!

  10. Having had a Marshall MB4210 for well over a year now, I think they are just as good as anything else out there in the same price range. Lots of headroom, 2 channels (effectively three with the blend dunction) and pretty versatile. I have gigged with it many times and have recently added the MBC115 cabinet as well. I have never had an issue with reliability and I don't forsee a need to replace it in the future.

That said, tone is a very personal thing. I didn't like the Ashdown or Peavey tones in the same price range, but others do. The important question is do you like the sound you're getting?

  11. I ordered a B/W/B scratchplate for my MIM Jazz on Thursday night and recieved it Saturday morning, and all for less than £17. All the screw/neck/pickup holes match up and it looks great. I'll use them again.

  12. Took them 6 weeks to deliver a Dunlop Bass Wah that their website said was in stock. They didn't contact me during this time even though they had my email address and mobile number, I had to chase them. And to add insult to injury, I didn't recieve the £20 voucher they promise on their website for delays over 28 days. Needless to say, I won't be using them again.

  13. I've now got two MIM Jazz basses and think both are great. One I got this morning, swapping for a Squier CV 60's P and a guitar Floor Pod!

I have tried many Jazz basses and there seems to be a trend. The quality with MIA is much more consistent and nearly all are very good, so you are fairly safe to mail order one sight unseen. The MIM is much more inconsistent, some are as good as MIA whilst some should be used for firewood. You really need to try a MIM before commiting to buying it. The Squier Vintage Modified and Classic Vibes series both have excellent quality control and I have never found a bad one. Only the MIA seems to be setup properly before distribution.

I've never tried a Aerodyne so I can't comment, but I do know they look great!

  14. Had an electric guitar, but I wanted to be Steve Harris so I swapped it for a Satellite Precision copy. I then discovered it was bloody hard to play Maiden songs as they were so fast, but maybe I could cope with a few of the simpler, slower Zeppelin songs, so I listened for the bass specifically for the first time on Led Zeppelin II and it became my mission to be able to play "Ramble On".

So, Steve Harris made me get a bass, but JPJ made me learn to play it!
