I'm more than happy with all of my MIM Jazzs. As I am a tinkerer and replace bridges, pickups etc., I don't see the point in paying more for parts I'm likely to replace anyway. As long as the neck is comfortable and it has a good neck/body pocket, it's a winner. Maybe I've just been lucky with my MIMs.

Started on guitar, traded it for a bass a few months later as there were loads of guitarists locally but no bass players. Still use a guitar to write songs with, but play bass in two bands and a seperate recording project as it is just more fun being part of a tight unit with the drummer driving the song rather than trying to compete in a widdlefest on my own!

I'm looking to trade my two month old Fender MIM Precision Bass as I don't really get on with the neck. It has a Gotoh 201 bridge and a SD Basslines SPB1 Vintage pickup fitted as well as a black WD Music scratchplate. I still have the original parts as well if required. There are no dings and just a little buckle rash on the rear. Please excuse the quality of the photos but my phone is fairly old!


Ideally I am looking for either another MIM Jazz or maybe an Ibanez SR500 and to do the trade in person rather than through the post.

I use an MB4210 to rehearse with drums and two guitarists playing heavy metal and I've never taken the volume past 4. Have you checked if the compressor is switched on (if so, turn it off), the active/passive switch set correctly and are you just using the classic channel? The classic channel on its own is quieter than the modern, but I tend to blend both channels together.

Never really liked the songs Level 42 did so can't really comment as I've never really listened to them.

I do listen to a fair bit of RHCP though. Personally, I prefer Flea's playing on BSSM onwards when he's mostly playing fingerstyle rather than 2,500 slaps and pops per minute like on Mother Milk and UMPP.

Proper warm-ups help, but if there is no backstage area, like in a pub, can be difficult.

Second hand Satellite P Bass copy swapped for a bottle of JD back in 1989. I used to put it through my old tranny Marshall 5210 guitar amp. The amp blew up after a few rehearsals but my sister still has the bass.

I think they're just a different gauge set of strings. They are available as Nickel, Steel or coated.

For just bass, I'll usually noodle either Black Night (Purple) or NIB (Sabbath). For the band levels we tend to do I Wanna Be Your Dog by the Stooges.

I really like the look of a couple of those, but I'll have to see what price point they come in at. Certainly the red PJ looks great and would be on a wish list (in black please!).

I have the MB4210 and I've been really pleased with it, capable of some great tones. The modern channel is great for slap tones, and the classic has a real grind to it. Be aware the classic channel is quieter than the modern channel, but you can compensate by using the blend facility.

I did try the MB4410 (it's enormous!) but decided the 4210 was more than sufficient for rehearsals, and just bought the 1x15 extension cab to add at gigs.

I know another person on this forum has had reliability issues with theirs, but I haven't had any problems so far (nearly two years).

Final thought: Love mine, but try before you buy because everybody's different.

Your best bet is to play both and see which feels better to YOU. Pickups are easily changed and relatively cheap compared to a whole new bass. I now have 3 MIMs and I'm happy with all of them. The necks just felt more comfortable to me than the US standards they had in each time I bought one. The finishing was definitely better on the US models, but not £400 worth.

I do urge you to try one first. I was going to get one as I loved my trusty GSR 200, but when I played it in the shop didn't get on with the "ramp" pickups at all (nowhere to put my thumb for fingerstyle). If thats not an issue for you, then they are very versatile, great sounding basses, especially when you take into account the price.

It's something I'm working on as I look ridiculous trying to do backing vocals while looking at my fretboard!

When I ordered a wah from the Bass Centre online which was shown as in stock, it took 7 weeks to recieve it. They never contacted me at any point, returned calls when promised and constantly tried to foist me off with "it will be the beginning of next week".

I've always had excellent results buying from Coda Music in Luton and Stevenage. Great prices, happy to let you try whatever you want and happy to order in anything not currently in stock.

Having always had rosewood fretboards in the past, just got my first maple today on a P Bass and I have to say I love it! Personally, I think maple suits a P tonally and looks great, but rosewood is still the way to go on a Jazz.

Just played in a Battle of the Bands type affair. Didn't get through (didn't expect to as it was one pint, one vote and we didn't go mob handed) but a good night as we've been offered a few gigs at some local venues. Bloody sound limiter box was a pain in the harris though... drummers always trip them!
