That's more than a bit naive. They are moving production so they can keep their previous margins, not to make the bass cheaper to the punter.

I'd say it's more than a bit naive to believe they're not hoping to make a few more quid on each one by moving production to mexico.

  2. Thanks for your comments. To be honest if I had the time available to meet people to try it etc, I'd do it at home.

Anyway, I'm bumping this with a price drop to £1150. I'm not not particularly overjoyed at losing around £500 on an amp I'm actually loathed to part with, but despite it's condition, warranty and little use, it's still a second-hand amp and the price should reflect this. Also a few things have cropped up and the cash whilst not critical, would be useful.

I've had a few interesting trade offers, but I'm not really looking for any more gear at the mo.

If it's not saleable on here for that price, I probably will hang on to it because I know I'll regret selling it later.

  3. I've had a few PM's expressing an interest in the amp and a couple of them said that it's a lot of money to shell out without trying the amp first. I totally appreciate that and knew from the start it would make people weary, so if it helps, I'm more than happy to give any buyer a weeks approval. I understand there'd be a cost to send it back, but I'd imagine through a good value site like Interparcel it'd be offset by the saving in fuel and time from avoiding a round trip to see it.

Are these like a scaled up Little Bastard?

I guess if you think they're both Ashdown, both valve and both have a pretty straight forward EQ section, than yes I guess there are similarities. However, I'm pretty sure it'll be a totally different circuit and the radically different power valves make it a different beast altogether.

  5. Nowhere Man is a personal favourite of mine.

Bizzarly he's probably the most underrated bassist ever, yet happened to be a brilliant, brilliant player in pretty-much the biggest and most highly-rated band of all time.

I guess when people think McCartney they think great singer, great songwriter. Very few realise he was a virtuoso on bass as well.

Have they reduced the price accordingly?

    I'm guessing not....!

This is the key really. These days MIM classic series stuff is pretty-much on par with similar styled MIJ guitars such as the Geddy Lee. I'd be pretty confident if they are now MIM that the quality will be virtually indistinguishable, but as MIJ instruments seem to be so expensive these days, I'd certainly expect the price to drop.

Production cost will be the reason for moving production, so it'd be a bit 'off' of Fender to not pass some of that saving onto the consumer.

  7. Lots of talk and info on here about the pro's and con's of specialist bass compressors, but does anyone here use an MXR Dynacomp?

Interested to know people's experinces of using one with bass are.

    +1

If you're using PA & you only need a monitor, then what you have is solely for your own enjoyment/ego.
For general pub & club gigs with no PA for the bass, then most 2x10 rigs would be more than ample.
In theory true, but there's a wide variety of 2x10 combos out there and plenty (not all) would be stressed to buggery trying to keep up with what a 50w valve guitar amp can give out.

Also an 8x10 doesn't usually have a bigger 'footprint' than a 2x10 combo anyway, so unless you're playing somewhere with a dangerously low ceiling, the only issue is transportation. Been able to wheel mine out the van, into the venue and a couple of us lifting it onto a stage, is a lot less hassle for me than carrying a 2x10 combo about.

  9. Smaller shops may only buy single units at a time, so if they put them on display they have a responsibility to look after them and keep all the original packaging. However I wouldn't have thought this would apply to Guitarguitar.

Anything that's clearly had a fair bit of use and/or comes in a battered old box with no real manual should certainly be advertised and priced as such.

Aside from the Ashdown you mentioned, the others aren't decent, they are just overpriced. I've been in examples of them all and they are sub Peavey build quality. Cheap Ashdown SS stuff is easy to work on and they send you the parts easily, the Ashdown valve amp I had was handwired to boutique quality. Orange amps are hot glued together.
Fair enough, but they sound decent ;)

It's this myth that 'because it's valve, it's top quality'. I think in a roundabout way, we are agreeing here.

Interesting you mention the Ashdown valve amp, what model was that?

  11. Really it was a response to someone who said you'd have to bin a solid state amp when it goes wrong. That isn't true and I simply pointed out that the majority of decent (I didn't say handmade, boutique or top-end) valve amps are made similarly.

It seems alot of people think that by spending £1500 on an amp they're getting some kind of indistructable bomb-proof piece of kit. My point was, thats not always the case.

Those all aren't very well made amps. Again, just because they are overpriced and heavily marketed, doesn't make them valid examples. Mcdonalds sell a lot more burgers than anywhere else, doesn't mean they are hold up examples of restaurant eating.
That's kinda my point :)

Handwired ones aren't necessarily any more money, none of mine were even half that. Just because people pay too much for not very well made things, doesn't invalidate the existence of the well made ones.
Never said it did, just they are few and far between and not as 'commercially' accessible. Really I was talking about the more mainstream brands that most recognise as 'high-end' valve gear (eg Ampeg, Orange, Ashdown etc). The majority of what they produce isn't really made much better than their equivalent solid-state variants. Thats not to say one is better than the other or none of them are good amps, just that reliability and repair-ability are similar.

Its a myth that buying (for eg) a new Orange valve head is getting you an indestructible 'tank' like amp, just as it's equally a myth that buying a SS Ashdown means you'll need to bin it first time it goes wrong.

This is the same forum where people like to spout off about guitarists who don't want to be parted from their Marshall half-stacks, right?

Am I the only one here to sense a touch of irony?
Hmmm, different beasts though aren't they. A 40w 1x12 valve guitar combo is easily loud enough for the majority of gigs, whereas a bass head and cab of similar spec just wouldn't compete.
However in those situations, I`ve always found that having the big-fridge rigs have enabled me to hear myself better than having the smaller rigs.
I think that's the key for me. My 8x10 sounds great, it's better than the 4x10 I had before it, and for whatever reason, better than when I've used two 4x10's, BUT the big thing is how much better I can hear my amp when I haven't just got speakers shooting the sound into my legs. Lifting up smaller cabs has never really worked for me, as everything I've tried has sounded so much better on the floor.

Having said that, big cabs are not particularly practical and if my band didn't have a van for it to live in, I'm pretty certain I'd make do with something smaller.

  15. Not totally convinced with the 100w idea. I'd have to hear one obviously but I think there's a reason why no one else really does one. I'm sure it could handle most small venues, but would many people take that chance when it might struggle and is more expensive than a 200w Orange, a 300w Ashdown or Ampeg or a 400w Marshall? Not sure re-valve costs would be lower either if you do have to run it high.

Don't know of anyone handwiring SS amps on turrets motivated mostly by pride in their work, so the difference shows in the upper end.
Yes but how many are? When your average pcb-based valve head is anything from £1200 upwards, that's already above and beyond most people's upper end.

if your solidstate amp goes wrong you have to bin it! much worse in my eyes
Not strictly true. If a solidstate amp is made to a half decent standard, it is perfectly repairable in the right hands.

In actual fact apart from the valves, there's very little difference in the components/build quality between the majority of decent modern solidstate amps and the majority of decent modern valve amps.
