I think he means me. Officially this would be my 6th bass build... Certainly something thats cost lots of money - though each one has sold to fund other musical equipment that is still used (My effects rig costs the same as boutique bass, as does my amp and cab). Any pennies I once had for such toys and squander is long gone and swallowed up by life. If I want something new now, other things have to be sacrificed...

Yeah I know, I was saying you're having one bass (ok, it's a final solution not a total count)

Which member of the band is being sacrificed first? :P

Struggling to see why you need to be able to play and instrument let alone to a grade 8 standard for a Engineering course.

Some of the best engineers i've worked with don't play a note, they're passionate about sound & how to make it sound great, not how to play the stuff.

It sounds like a course made up of mixed modules, all very odd indeed

TBH I can take or leave the Roscoe and Moog - Krispy Kreme is what it's all about!

Correct me if I'm wrong but £900+ seems a little out http://www.promenade...nct-JBass-Black

Simply refering to the realisation that I'm too old to make judgements on what type of amp tones define metal after listening to your band. Its not a genre I follow so maybe should have not suggested anything. I was purely going on budget / price.

To me, 100 /120 watt heads can "do" metal. I'm not enough of an expert to discern the different amps required for certain types of music :)

Ah I see, it was still a useful post as I realised something that wouldn't really suit so thanks :)

  6. I'd probably go "custom" fedora. As in new shape, new pickups, 6 or 7 strings, nice finish of my choice etc, I only say this because that way I would get exactly the instrument I wanted. Rather than what fender had to offer back in the 60's

A little off tangent but he should have a look for an Ampeg VH-140C head. It's solid state, but it's one of the finest distortion channels you'll ever encounter and would be well under budget while being louder than a jet engine if needs be. Of course, solid-state isn't in fashion these days, but if he sees one around he should let his ears decide. It's the kind of amp that shuts the mouths of valve snobs.

Other than that, the 6505 is everywhere, it's a great sound but everyone is starting to sound the same. The Dark Terror sounds great but might not have the volume for a full on live Metal band, he should try to borrow one to see if it will cut it in terms of volume. Tone-wise they're rather nice.

I'll make sure to put the ampeg on the list, how does it sound clean generally? For example I like quite a lot of the distortion sounds you can get from the marshalls I've heard but I've never heard a clean from one that I've liked.

Live the guitar is generally mic'd up. It may mean investing in our own mic and stand for the exceptions but I think sound should come before volume. Thanks for the heads up though
