1.
"All I ever hear is sub-bass tractor noises and pseudo guitar noodling"

the sub-bass tractor noises are probably because whatever system your listening to it through isn't doing it justice. when you start to get really low, it's more about feeling the notes than hearing it. and just because you don't seem to like pseudo guitar noodling doesn't mean it's not an apt form of expression.

"(and, trust me, I am not narrow minded about it)"

maby not about that (in your eyes), but sounds like your being slightly narrow minded about this. music is about free expression, yes? and to effectivly and freely express yourself the tool you are using should put as few barriers in the way as possible, yes? obviously some people feel 'confined' as it were by 4-5-6 or even 7 strings and feel the need for more. just because it's more than most people 'need' (and remember, need is an extremely subjective word*) doesn't mean it's any less justifiable. if you don't like the music expressed on these instruments, fair enough (i've got to admit, most of what i've heard on extreme extended range instruments hasn't really floated my boat). but each to there own eh? wouldn't music get awfull boring very quickly if everyone just stuck to standards and didn't push barriers with instrument creation?

*i mean, we don't really need 4 strings do we, i'm sure a very musical person create wonderful melodies on a 2 string bass.
Totally Agreed.

I stick to 4 strings as thats what I love playing. If I wanna noodle I play my guitars. Thats just my thing. Each to his own, there is a ear for everything in this world.

I tell ya mate,

I stumbled over his sound on my rig recently! Its rather fiendish rumbling sub bass thats more from his Audioslave work than RATM.

I use a MXR Bass Blowtorch through an Ashdown ABM with full valve pre-amp selected. For added "Cochise" I stick the Cry baby bass wah on. Ive seen it move pint glasses!!!! Great stuff.

Keep searching

3.
Up for grabs is my immaculate hardly used MXR Bass Blowtorch Effect Pedal. This is what Jim Dunlop have to say about this evil brick:

The M-181 MXR Bass Blowtorch bass overdrive pedal is made to deliver the hottest sounds this side of Hades-from a tube-like growl to full-blown distorted madness. Because the Bass Blowtorch's overdrive is focused in the midrange frequencies, you'll retain your low-end thunder and high-end sizzle while the overdriven mids cut through any mix. An active 3-band EQ with a mid shift switch provides precise signal balancing, while the Blend knob lets you balance the distortion with the direct signal for the exact tone you're after. 18-volt performance equals increased dynamic headroom, clarity, and low noise no matter the volume level, and true bypass circuitry means it's really off when you want it off, leaving your signal completely unaffected.

MXR M-181 Bass Blowtorch Overdrive Distortion Pedal Features:

From traditional tube-like growl to full-blown high-gain distortion
18V performance for increased dynamic headroom and clarity
Low-noise performance at loud volumes
Active 3-band EQ with 3-position mid shift for precise tone sculpting
Distortion and direct signal blending
Real-world tested by world-class touring bassists
Tough die-cast housing
True hardwire bypass

Comes with original box (no power supply)

Offers around £80 considered. Will accept paypal or postal order.

Let me know if your interested

Cheers

Withdrawn due to its phenomenal performance over the past few gigs. Spending time working with this pedal has really shown me its potential. Hence the change of heart. I was going to replace it with a Roger Mayer VoodooBass but not anymore. This definately aint a quick sound kinda pedal, well worth the effort once set.

just thought Id let you guys know =)

Cheers

6.
ha ha actually some accordions are worth a packet, easily as much as a classic bass ..
You should be able to buy quite a few with the proceeds, and I'm sure he'd rather you used the legacy to actually make music .. yes, of course he would :)

What's the difference between a melodeon and an accordion?
The accordion will burn for longer ...
LOL, like the punchline.

Well, I'll be honest, he's already given me one to try (hes a softy really)and its a tough instrument to grasp, maximum respect to all players of the awkwardest of (wind??) instruments. Most certainly aint my thing.

Hadnt thought there may be a market for them, may even be enough to buy the Triple Omega purple heart Alembic ive had my eye on!!

Who knows????

7. Lovely story. My grandad is miserable old git and insists that he is leaving me his musical armoury. He plays the 'kin accordian!!!!!!!!!! I'll be up to my boxxocks in the things.

Wanna trade Grandads?

Apart from their choice of instrument they seem quite similar. I'll chuck in a set of strings for that nice MM of yours :)

If your ever lookin for an accordian...................................

8. Bought in 2000.

Regularly serviced, Large casters fitted, some slight surface damage from gigging. I really dont want to change as she has been the unfaltering foundation to my sound for 7 yrs. Shes been consistent through my musical peaks and troughs, but being a 4x10 she is 'kin heavy.

Im looking to downsize due to health reasons (not caused by the amp, hee hee).

If you fancy getting your hands on this MONSTER bass combo and have a 2x10 combo or head / cab set up to trade let me know.

Im interested in.

Ashdown ABM 2x10 combo or head / cab set up
Ampeg B500 2x10
Mesa Boogie Buster

This amp is AMAZINGLY powerful and the Sub Harmonic Generator is a truly superb addition to an already stonkin amp. If she goes a tear will be shed but I wanna keep musically active so........................

Sadly

Col =(

9. Just a shame your fountain of knowledge is delivered with such poor attitude.

Be nice man, it costs nothing to respect your fellow fatstring plucker.

These sites are all about camaraderie and helping each other, might I suggest a visit to www.angermanagement.com

Lesson learnt?

10. A rather harsh and unecessary comment there Mr Ferret. Did god die and leave you in charge? Id hang my head in shame if I were you!

Your reply indicates towards a very superior view of oneself and ones knowledge. Mr Evans is a good friend of mine and a damn fine bass player, why on earth would you want to respond in the manner you chose? Unless, you have internal submodalities that indicate a negative self image and poor interpersonal skills. If I were you Id recheck my internal belief hierarchy and make some changes.

just let us all ask whatever question we like in whatever manner and forum takes our fancy, its our right you know.

Ah fxxk I aint got anymore time to give you.

Get over it big boy

11.
Might be a bit daft, but who are Ped and Nelly, are they our bassworld/underworld henchmen?
Shwyt ti Tim,

How ya keepin?

12.
Mind if I ask where abouts in your sigal you put this? is in between your amp and bass or in after the amp/eq (ie effects loop)?

ANdy
Hi Andy,

She is the last pedal in my chain. That goes straight into the preamp. I dont use the FX loop.

14. Just bought one of these and have to say its breathed a whole new dimension into my tone.

No undesirable "breathing" side effect and not only tightens the sound right up but adds a very nice only what can be described as "sub-growl". The sustain is STONKIN. Not sold as a bass specific comp but really works a treat. Its well built and takes a little time to test for your sound but well worth the outcome.
Power supply a bit fiddly but not worry.

Ive tried loads of comps and this one has more than won out. Check one out if you looking for a good quality compressor for your fatstrings.

They aint cheap but VGVFM.

15. Hi Guys,

I use one of these regularly and find the 18 v requirement is best served with 2 x 9v batteries. Ive had her a year and gig a few times a week as well as rehearse and im only on my second set of duracell. I changed them because I thought she was powering up from some supernatural source. A great sweep of sounds available, take the time to test her and she'll become you best mate. I hate power cables everwhere, shes more than fair on batteries.

Just my thoughts

Keep Groovin

I had to ask, Cheers for the reply.

If I sell the Gibson I may very well come knockin with some dosh. Ive had similar experiences with 5 strings and find a D tuner the best option for a middle ground. Have you tried one?

good luck

17.
Hi all, I have an early Warwick Buzzard dating from the late 80's.
It has the natural wood finish, straight through neck but does not have the forward volume control mentioned above.
I gigged with it for many years and it is a really nice guitar. I don't really gig much these days and could be persuaded to part with it for the right money, is anyone seriously interested??
Hi Mike,

Im currently looking for a buzzard, having had one previously and regreted selling her in times of need............blablabla. Do you still have her? If so what sort of figure are we looking at? Would you be interested in a trade??

Cheers

Col

18. 4 String Fanatic of 20 yrs gigging experience I also teach quite regularly.

Ive tried a few 5 stringers and didnt enjoy the low B string, although now I do have a hipshot for E-D drop tuning.

I approach the bassist role as the link between drums and harmony. Currently have a 4 piece band with 1 geetar. I get plenty of space to run around should the song call for it but mainly concentrate on making the song groovy and sound awesome.

Ive been lucky enough to be given a couple of songs that highlight my playing. For these I pull out a few tricks n slaps and taps but only for short periods. Im not onr for too much limelight (let the geetarist have that stuff)

Overall I play to enjoy and keep to my groove job pretty solidly whilst having tons of fun.

My fave practice routines include fast runs and grooves (Claypool / Entwistle) just coz they are challenging and great for hand fitness.

Just love plucking the fatstring!!!!
