I tried double bass but its been sat in my bedroom doing nothing for about a year so time to move it on. Its in good condition aside from a couple of marks but nothing life-threatening. Electronics all working fine and comes with a soft gigbag.

I'm guessing everyone in this thread has barefaced cab, so I'd like to know if Mr Barefaced sends you a tracking number when they post it off? I only ask because I got th email saying 'such and such a cab will be soon be posted to this address etc etc' about 3 weeks ago.

Love hearign everyone's take on this. Personally I prefer to change tone using my hands, either by playing closer to the bridge or neck, playing harder/softer, muting on either hand, occasionally using a pick when I remember to get it out of my bag. Using EQ or changing pick-up is a last resort for me

I've recently read a couple of interesting articles about tone both in BGM. The first was by Alex Claber (barefaced bass) where he talked about the frequency spectrum and what parts of it the human responds to best, the conclusion being that melodic instruments like saxophone, violin, and the human voice have a lot of content in the upper mids, therefore supportive instruments like bass guitar should avoid too much content in this region (unless taking a solo).

I then read another article saying that bass players shouldn't use the same tone for all songs/gigs. Now I personally feel that in 99% of songs/gigs the bass is meant to fill a particular region of the frequency spectrum because nothing else does and to go more bright/mid-rangey would stand on other instrument's toes.
Does anyone agree that you should you change you're tone for every song?

What about guys like Jaco or James Jamerson or Anthony Jackson? I don't recall them changing their tone. I even read that Lee Sklar gets annoyed when he sees bass players fiddling with the controls on their bass.

a guitar-teaching friend of mine has his students pay for 4 lessons at a time and has a contract with each of them explaining under what terms they can cancel the lesson, something like with 24/48 hours. He allows them to move a lesson if given enough notice but if they just don't turn up then they lose the lesson and he still gets paid.

Played a very fancy hotel/spa on Friday night, they were running near 2 hours late but they had a great buffet - fish and chips and a variety of spring rolls with sweet & sour sauce.

Played a wedding on the rooftop of a hotel. The load in was a total nightmare: 100 yards down a corridor full of bins, the slowest lift on earth (the only one we had access to) and a narrow corridor not designed for a rear steer trolley. Was a slow start but had the dancefloor packed by 10. Our dep drummer did very well considering it was the first time we'd played with him, some very extended versions of songs. No buffet though.

just turn up the volume and/or the low mids (the dial between 'bass' and 'middle'), your brain percieves mids as louder than other frequencies. and FWIW leaving space in the mix between the bass and guitar isn't a bad thing

these are pretty amazing basses, and an amazing price

Seeing as gigs are starting to pick up and I finally have a job that pays it has crossed my mind a few times to get a headless/really really good bass. not sure the GF would agree though

I got the most recent one, the bass sits fine but I notice over time that it slips slightly and I have to re-adjust regularly. It could be that I wear my basses very high and so need the neck to be pointing at a 45 degree angle. Its small complaint about an otherwise great bass

i bought an ibanez SR1206 and while i is great instruemnt (great sound, great feel, great looks) it has some bias towards the headstock. I read a review of a 6 string Dingwall and it has similar (but slight) balance issues, is this standard with 6 string basses? Is there any way to solve the problem? TBH its not serious, its just that its the only thing that bothers me about the bass.

My band is playing a wedding in Ireland in a couple of months and for the sake of cost and space we're going to hire a PA locally. The wedding is near a place called Belcoo in Fermanagh (Northern Ireland), does anyone know of a reputable hire company around that sort of area?

as far as the band is concerned we're all conscientious players so no volume wars going on. we're a 4 piece (drums, bass, 2 guitars and 2 vocals). In terms of venues I reckon it'll be the standard mix of marquees, church halls, pubs and drawing rooms of stately homes.
Our agent has said they can help us source a decent second-hand PA so will definately speak to them at some point. Upgrading is definately the intention.
If you get active speakers can you then plug in a mixing desk (sorry if this is a silly question, not a techy guy )?

My covers band has recently got an agent who has given us 4 gigs in about as many days (woohoo!) but we're all still pretty skint and inexperienced in the big bad world of functions (drummer and me have done about 100 between us but those have always 'turn up, play, go home' affairs). So on to my question, we really need a PA of our own and I want to know what exactly do we need, what can we get away without for the time being (our budget is £1000 but ideally less).

I've looked into a few bundles on DV247 for ideas, do we desperately need a huge sub-woofer right now? or will two decent tops do until we can afford something better? Can we get away with one monitor (or none?!)

PS I know the ideal would be two tops, two subs, 4 monitors, big digital mixer, a bazillion drum mics and DIs with more buttons and switches than the Deathstar etc but we're currently on a shoestring budget

he kindly helped to clear some space under my desk,
paid promptly (only would've been quicker if I'd answered sooner!)

How tall are you btw? coz I'm pretty short too (like 5'7") and have my eye on a sound gear 6 string but after reading this thread I'm not so sure

this way better than the single! I did this once for a wedding and we just played it as written (so to speak)... sounded s**t, thats one wedding ruined
