1. Happy Christmas and New Year everyone! Nord & Pierreganseman, you got your basses yet? Be great to see some pictures! In fact it would be great if everyone with a SEi could post pics of their basses...who says you can have too much of a good thing??
2. Ooh...really nice! Are they Nordy pickups going in that one or something else? I've also got a 5 string headless at the early stages of being made at the moment, to have Nordy P & MM pickups and Alder body core (Wenge/Bubinga neck with Amboyna Burl facings). Any idea on when your bass is going to be ready?
3. Sounds really nice, especially with the matching pickup covers and John East preamp. What pickups & neck/body woods did you go for? Has Martin given a idea of when it might be ready? Martin is also building me a 5 string, but the order was placed only a few months ago!
4. Nord, fancy sharing a little about that Jazz you got coming (specs, stage of completion, any pics etc.)?
5. Hey Stu, what did you get? Be great to hear some details about it...
6. Many thanks everyone for your very kind comments. Martin's work really is amongst the best in the world and is the benchmark I use for evaluating every other luthier, comparing favourably with the biggest names such as Ken Lawrence, Jens Ritter, Roger Sadowsky, Jerzy Drozd to name but a few (I've tried just about all of them over the years!). The SEi 8 was simply the best fretless bass I've ever played, so I'm really sad to see it go but also pleased it will see future use. The other bass in the picture is the one and only SEi 9 string, completely different to the SEi 8 but in many ways even more of an amazing instrument to play and is staying with me...at least for the moment as one can never say never after all. Anyway the SEi 8 is now sold to a gent in Japan...sniff!
7. Well, never say never... Never expected to sell this unique one off fretless bass, but I did not see old age coming that makes 35" scale length basses too painful to play. The one and only 8 string bass Martin has ever made, currently strung low F# through F, but many different options possible. Key specifications:

Flamed maple and purpleheart thru neck
35” ebony fingerboard (36 frets)
Alder wings
Thuya burl facings
Villex Pickups
Glockenklang 3 band circuit
Graphtech Ghost piezo circuitry
Purple fret position LED markers on side of neck (blue at the octaves)
Approx 11.5lbs
Ultra slim neck profile makes this bass easy to play, even for myself who has the smallest hands ever (never found any man with smaller hands!). Quite simply the best fretless I’ve ever played in 20+ years of searching. Huge low fundamentals (Villex speciality), the all critical fretless mids to die for (Glockenklang circuitry ideal for this) and ideal action and sustain. This is genuinely a sad sale for me, it has been a favourite go to bass for a long time. ...Obviously the fretless one in the SEi basses photo! The bass is currently at The Bass Gallery (http://thebassgaller...s-8-string.html), who are handling all aspects of the sale for me. So why not give them a call or drop by and give it a try (don’t say I didn’t warn you!!) Many thanks and let me know if you have any queries!
8. +1 for SEi basses. Tried every other luithier I can get my hands, but these basses remain the best for me.
9. I'm sure you all know what this is, but just in case or you like an easy life: What Is It? One of the very best valve preamps ever made, providing the legendary Aguilar tone without the associated weight of their valve amp: · Two valves (12AX7WA), one driving the gain the other driving equalisation (real valve tone) · Bass (40Hz), Mids (400Hz), Treble (4Khz) tone controls, with deep (30Hz) and bright (5-7Khz) switches · Separate volume and master output controls (for maximum control of the valve tone) · Parallel/Series effects loop, with instrument/line level and variable send and return levels (ultra flexible) · Pre/post and ground lift switches · Jensen transformer balanced DI (for that amazing DI tone) · Built in power supply (240V) Plenty of comments about this on Talkbass and you can hear samples of it on basstasters (http://www.basstaste...ilar_DB659.html) What Condition Is It In? Good condition, with some rack rash on the ears and the top. Fully operational and sounds superb. Original and spare valves, for tonal variations. Why Am I Selling It? Old age is a bugger and I’m forced to seriously rationalise my equipment (I’ve gone from a Pedaltrain 3 to a Nano!). So this and a whole lot of other rather tasty stuff is sadly now having to find a new home. Not available new. Looking for £525 (incl P&P within the UK).
10. I'm sure you all know what this is, but just in case or you like an easy life: What Is It? Top quality flight cased pedalboard from one of the best UK flightcase manufacturers: · 650mm x425mm x 130mm size (amongst the best sized pedalboard, big enough to get pretty much anything [I had a 19” rack preamp on it!] but not so big to become very heavy and unwieldy) · 9mm removable board · Rubber feet on the base · Full metal flight casing More details at Flight Case Wahrehouse’s site (http://www.flightcas...sp?id=3148-2678) Also selling a Pedaltrain 3 pedalboard of exactly the same size and that fits this beautifully (http://basschat.co.u...e/#entry2737735). Let me know if you are interested in both (choice of soft or hard case for the same pedalboard!). What Condition Is It In? In excellent condition, though the 9mm removable board is showing signs of having a number of pedals screwed onto it. 15. Tuner with headphone socket & aux input (e.g. Boss TU88) works for me. I use a pedalboard to get the tone I want, using the amp just for gain (not tone). Really easy to get my tone and be where I want in the mix, whatever amp I'm given or wherever I am (e.g. headphone practice at home). Just my story...
16. Sounding good Karl. Separating the front and tail sections from the yoke seems logical and the press studs worked well, enabling some customisation and interchangeability between basses. Presumably the suede backed yoke section would cover both one's shoulder and back (the suede on my Moody strap as it sits flat over my back helps with stability for my big heavier basses). Having said all that, would separate front and tail sections of the strap affect how the load is spread over the strap? For some reason I keep wondering whether an all-in-one single piece of contoured leather (without separate front and tail sections however attached) might provide the ultimate load spreading solution for those of us with heavy basses.
17. Very very impressive strap, great quality leather/workmanship and compares well with my Moody’s 4” straps (amongst the very best in the business). Expensive but still good value for money. Karl customises each individual strap and I suspect this one was made for basses to be worn at mid height and pretty horizontal. It excelled in this position, laying flat across my back and spreading the load very well (better than my Moody strap). I found it worked best with the widest part of the strap on my back rather than the top of my shoulder that I intuitively wanted to put it. This specific strap did not lay so flat on my back or feel as comfortable for the higher up and more vertical bass positions I use, so I’ve sent a few suggestions direct to Karl as he fine tunes his design. Many thanks to Karl for this wonderful opportunity to try a really nice strap.
18. PM'd you Karl. What's the latest with these straps?
