i read somewhere that if you soak your strings in methylated spirits they come out like new. i tried it today with purple meths.... i soaked my strings in a jam jar in meths for 20 mins, took them out and wiped them off. dryed them with a hairdryer and hey presto they sound good as new.
a good money saving tip :)
Thanks for this..somebody had said about boiling strings but I was a bit sceptical..

The (brass/bronze?) strings on my acoustic are filthy and cos I only use it occassionally I was reluctant to buy another set - now I won't have to! (assuming it works on brass/bronze). Anybody?

So true...going by the Mick Karn thread I think that respect from your fellow bass players is equally important - at least till the time to pay the bills is concerned. Would you rather be a rich, talentless sh*t or a respected player with little cash? What ever happened to integrity?

  4. I've only found this feed today though I was aware that Mick - real name Andonis Michaelides - had been diagnosed with cancer after reading something on the Wal website. It restores my faith in human nature when you see feeds like this. I had read that Mick had made somewhat of a recovery and was planning some gigs with the lead singer of Bauhaus. Anybody have an update on this?

As a fellow Greek and my elder brother having recently been treated for Non Hodgkis Lymphoma and Leukaemia I feel compelled to help in some way. I, like many others, was inspired by Mick as a teenager and would happily donate my own vinyl copy of "Titles" to any fund that will find it's way to Mick and his family. If anybody wants to take up the challenge of putting together this fund please contact me.

I would compare them more to the original Volkswagon Beetles - didn't change or improve despite everybody around them building better items. Stuck with drum brakes and the engine in the boot they did not evolve. Same with Fenders - same crap electronics and wood from the 50s till the modern day, only recently decided to install active p/ups where others have used these since the 80s. Supposedly market leaders - basically selling square wheels!! Quality Control is merely a concept rather than reality!

Some might argue that Fenders are like Porsche - I don't think this is the case as Porsche improved over the years.

I think you may have guessed that I'm not a fan!!!

  6.
You asked for it....

My Mk III was one of the last two basses Pete made. It was very special for a number of reasons, not least because I supplied the facings he used (picked up on a ski-ing holiday in Vermont). This is the only spalted maple Wal in the world.

I also asked for a walnut core ( usually mahogany), and Pete gave the bass a double pinstripe veneer (usually only one).

As this was going to be my ultimate Wal, I also had Pete make fretted and fretless necks (ebony boards, no dots, unlined fretless) for the bass, so I could swap them over as and when I fancied a change. I also asked him to put his fish signature on the back of the necks.

Pete also bound the pickups with contrasting laminates. Again, a very unusual feature.

Often the back of a Wal looks just as good as the front!

    And here it is, finished....

    Enjoy!
Nice!!!

  7. Afterthought...Brandoni's in Wembley came highly recommended by a friend.

As well as repairs they also have a stock of late 60s Vox and EKOs, including what I think are one of the most beautiful basses ever, the EKO BX7, which they will put together to your specs at prices well below what you see (inferior copies?) being sold on eBay. Was so tempted...

    www.tjcguitars.co.uk

Terry did a respray on a black Fender Precision, to Arctic White (nitro, mmmmmm) charged £150, when everywhere else was looking at £300.

He also did a great set-up on my bass, plays like a dream now, and for the full set-up he charges £50.

Was also a top bloke to deal with.
Glad to see somebody beat me to it - I can also confirm that Terry does excellent work at a reasonable price. I had my VC set up and some work done on a (buzzing) fret that had popped (possibly during its journey from California) recently. Work was done to a high standard at a reasonable price (£80 all in) and the turnaround time was about 4 days. I would recommend him to anybody in the North Herts area ( in fact anybody, anywhere) needing some work done.

Ditto on him being a top bloke!!

Have fun finding his house which is tucked away in Stevenage!! (his address did not appear on the map I had...)

Anybody having some work done can pass on my thanks to Terry again ..

  9. I'm watching this feed with interest as I've got a ltd edition bubinga body Dolphin Pro1 - beautiful to look at, plays like a dream, excellent range of sounds, etc. When you see Thumbs selling for over a grand it seems wrong (an injustice) that you're selling for only £850 (they're now £3k). Can you keep me posted on the sale price? Best of luck with the sale - somebody's gonna get a bargain!!

  10. I love :) the sound from mine but I just can't get my head around the tiny fret spacings. Also the "feel" from the strings makes it difficult to play with any speed as compared to a normal bass. I can't get a decent slap sound out of it try as a may. Walking basslines do sound wicked though. I haven't played mine for months for the above reasons - anybody want to take it off me??

  11.
Send it back. You've just paid a lot of money for some people to not do their jobs properly. I know it's hassle, but it's not good enough.

    Truckstop
I agree absolutely...you've bought what some people (not me though) would see as a top quality item but that's not what you got..this has always been my gripe with Fenders..the instruments rarely live up to the reputation!! If you bought a Ferrari and the build quality was not up to scratch wouldn't you take it back to have the faults put right?

Send it back and have it set up the way a top instrument should be..

Eur 100. I simply bought it just for try some effects and never used it. Little and powerful. Someone interested?
Hi Daniele

I've also got a Boss ME20B which i'm trying to sell - did your's sell? How much did you get for it? Eur100 seems cheap...

    best wishes...
Probably the smallest 2+2 headstock I know of (which it's going to have to be) and one of the most attractive is the early Goodfellow shape. You should be able to use the current E & A tuner holes, but with smaller tuners (eg; Schaller M4)
....remarkably similar to Veillette Citron....

  16.
If anyone is passing by Bradford in the next couple of weeks, I have a promotional Trace Elliot biker style leather jacket (size XL), complete with embossed logo on the back & green lining free to a good home!

I got it from a mate in the trade a fair few years ago and it's pretty decent quality leather & in good nick but could probably do with a bit of a sponge down - I used to wear it at outdoor gigs as I could wear a thick fleece under it but in these days of micro fleeces it's a bit too big for me and as the missus says, I have too many other leather jackets that actually fit me!

If anyone fancies it, please drop me a PM
Update?? have you actually got rid of it yet??

  17.
I'm not sure if drum machine is better than metronome if you want to work on your time.

Drum machine, as there are many more 'sounds' going from it rather than from metronome, can give you a false sense of security, in terms of time feeling/flow..

Drum machines are cool if you're jamming/looking for ideas, but when it comes to timing practice, I'd go for metronome.

And, if you do, don't set that thing on 120, 160,220 or other crazy bmp's!!

Start setting it on low bpm's, like 30, or 40, so that you can play 4 notes per one click or something like that..
Yep, it will be harder in the beginning to play with metronome clicking 30pbm, but, believe me, it will benefit in future..

Of course, you can set it on 120 (4x more) rather than 30, and it will feel much more 'safer', but it's not going to get you anywhere. Metronome won't develop time for you, you have to do it yourself, it's only there to guide you.

    Faith
Do you know that's the best bit of advice I've heard in ages..I feel almost privileged to have read it!!

  18.
yeah cant understand it either mate
simple really..it's called the recession..bet you've had loads of (crap) offers/interest but people (well me anyway) just haven't got the cash at the moment. The thing about quality gear is that if it doesn't sell this week it might next week. Hold on to it a put it up again in a few weeks/months.
Classic case of this is the EKO BX7 from Portugal which is up for grabs (yet again). Nice bass, wrong price!!!
