My current neighbours are OK about me playing but, TBH, when I practice I don't turn it up too loud.
One of my neighbours in my first flat was a sound engineer at British Aerospace and a former Sax player who tried to insist that I fill my bass bins with sound proofing and stand them on a blanket filled bread basket. Wasn't going to happen.
He threatened to complain to the local council but after he'd complained about an electric fan being left on overnight by the local dentists downstairs they stopped taking him seriously.
Consideration from both parties goes a long way. -

Yet another vote for the SGC Nanyo Bass Collection (strictly, the Made In Japan series only).
The entry-level, passive SB301 is OK but nothing special. The cheapest active bass, the SB310 is pretty good but won't necessarily blow your socks off.
The SB320 is simply sublime. If you're a big fan of super-middy tones (Warwick, Schecter, etc.) then probably not the bass for you. If you like Fenders then the SB320 will blow away most, and at a fraction of the price.
Speaking of which, the days of the SB310 for £150 and the SB320 for £200 are gone I'm afraid. If you find an SB320 in good nick, don't hesitate to splash £300 or even £350 to get it.
You won't be disappointed.

There's a SB401 on Gumtree for £235

Jack's 320 twin brother, now more sensibly priced:

and a nasty red 5er on ebay for £200

They are still out there if you're prepared to look. -
Not me playing but here's a few of the tones available from one of Alan's creations.

Nice...love the flame neck
-
I had an Overwater custom for while - probably one of the best "super Jazzes I've ever played - stupidly sold it because it wasn't getting used - had a really nice neck and had near perfect weight/balance - really should have just used it and saved on "sellers regret".
GLWTS. -
I agree with most of the basses in your list. It's much harder to find a "bad Bass" now than it was, say, 30 years ago.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the Bass Collection Nanyos, particularly the active ones (310, 320, etc) - great value for less than £200. There's one for sale in the "Basses for sale" thread for £150 which I'd definitely go for if I didn't already have 3. -
I like it...thankfully I can't impulse buy it!!

You tried all the Facebook groups for selling gear Mick? Admittedly the average price of basses advertised on various Facebook pages are lower than on basschat, but you never know!

They say that good things come to those who wait.... -
Lozz196 had that very same bass so will be able to give you an idea as to pros and cons. From my own experience I found that an acoustic bass does NOT give you the best of both worlds - certainly not as versatile or as loud as an acoustic guitar. Personally I wouldn't buy another.
There are lots of quality low end basses available - certainly more than when I first started playing way back when - some good Squiers, Yamahas and even entry model Musicman Subs in the £200-300 range but you could pick up a really nice Bass Collection Nanyo for half this money (there's a black one available in the "For sale" section for £150) which weigh about 8LBs and gives you the P/J option as well as active models. They are very highly regarded by many.
YouTube as a resource is fantastic and joining Scott Devine's website (even just the free bit) is an absolute must. I found DK Marlowe a useful site too. For learning specific songs Songsterr.com is great.
With the amount of internet resources available learning to play now is far easier than it's ever been - just remember to enjoy it too... -
I had a Warwick Dolphin which was called, inevitably, "Phillippa"...."they call him Flipper, Flipper...faster than lightning..."

Welcome from another Mick Karn fan..

Welcome aboard Prof.
For a useful starting point you might want to post your location to see if there are any BCers near you who will give you a few pointers. As a Sax player you'll already have a good starting point in regards scales so good luck... -

I try to rotate gigging my basses as much as possible, I have quite a few and now don't gig that often so yes it is a constant surprise to pick up a bass I haven't played for a few months and remember exactly why I brought it.....which then triggers the guilt trip of having really good gigging basses sitting around not doing what they were intended to do but, I don't want to sell them because, to me, they are the basses I wanted...if that makes sense

I currently have 3 in my living room - keeping a Ritter, an ACG and a GB in their cases.....show me a better bass for £150.
-
Really don't need another amp but I'm so tempted..
-
I really like that...wouldn't be surprised if Musicman nicked your idea...
-
There's a huge amount of quality gear out there now so it might help if you posted your location so that local BCers may be inclined to let you try their gear. Alternatively there's the London Bass Guitar Show in March which will confuse you further and infect you with the inevitable GAS. Also check out your local Bass Bashes in the "Events" thread.

I've owned 2x Wals and didn't get on with either - the neck profile just felt wrong somehow whereas the asymmetric neck profile on my ACG feels sooo right. The ACG sits so well in regards balance/comfort whereas I found that the lower horn on the Wal used to bite into my leg when playing sitting down. It was also quite weighty - does anybody own one that's less than 10LBs?
Choosing between the pick ups/pre-amps is merely a matter of taste as both produce a fantastic range of tones which should satisfy 99.999% of bass players.
Wals have been holding their price over the past few years which means that you could probably pick up 2x ACGs for the price of one Wal.
To throw another cat amongst the pigeons, you could always consider a Ritter - all the benefits of a Jazz (neck/weight/balance) and another great pre-amp which gives you huge range which your typical Fender doesn't. If you're looking for something a bit more exclusive this is probably the way to go.
Mesa Boogie worth the premium price tag ?

Mesa gear IS expensive but very well designed and built to last. And you only have to pay once.
My Walkabout is very solidly built using quality components, is well designed and should outlast me.
Frank.

I agree with everything you've said.
I have a Walkabout through a Vanderkley 112 - really warm, rounded tones and I have the confidence that they'll do virtually everything I need them to. The Walkabout isn't so heavy that you break your back every time you think about having to move it. I get compliments from friends who own Markbass all the time.
