What weight is the Lodestone Kevin?

9.6 lbs   , I'll probably move it on because I just can't get on with the 5 string , but I love looking at it .

I'm not a big fan Seymour Duncan pickups apart from their Quarter pounder pickups, what is it that you don't like about them? that will help others recommend replacements and possibly to work out what model of Duncan's you have currently.

What is that funny black bar thing by the bridge?

They just seem weak / no punch compaired to my shuker basses that are passive .The bar is a Roland GR55 pick up .

Dey be Seemoor Ducins, fer shoor!

Seriously, I think there should be a label on the bottom of them, if you're happy taking them out.

More importantly, how is that scratchplate held on?

I bought it several years ago on hear ,I think it's double sided tape , I've upgraded the bridge & tuners & I'm considering upgrading the pick ups as they seem a bit weak compared to my other passive basses .

Yes - I was really tempted by this: https://ashdownmusic.com/collections/b-stock/products/lodestone-artist-b-stock

But I don't want active and it's really hard to tell what is going on with the finish from the photo's - sort of looks like it flaked off!

Makes you wonder what'd happen if you could call them and make an offer on it? Can't help but think a wipedown with a cloth would have been a good move before taking pictures!

In natural light it looks pretty solid black & to my eyes looks really nice you can hardly see that finish , The P models are passive .

How does it balance with the extra weight at the headstock?

    Balance is spot on .

Nice  - how does it play?

It came with a very low action , it's got a really fast neck ..It's my first ever 5 string I'll just have to see how I get on , I wish they had a 4 string in the same colour .as I could see than becoming my main bass .

  6. Lodestone from Ashdown , lovely bass very close to a TBass ,at a silly price £425 for a £2k bass .they still have a few left ,

  7. I've never had an active bass before , I've just snapped up a Lodestone 5 string from Ashdown ..these  were £1800 .there is about 4 left on their site for £425 ..They bought them out before the T bass , I'd really recommend getting one ….anyway how long are these batteries likely to last  & do they suddenly cut out or do you get some sort of warning when they are on the way out ? cheers .

(Assuming you're using fingerstyle using index and middle fingers) There's a technique  "fix" for this that works equally well on 4,5 or 6 (never tried a 7)

When playing strings higher than the lowest-pitched, (gently) rest your thumb against it enough to damp it. Use your third finger to damp the string physically above the one you're plucking and play up "through" that string into the one you're damping. Means you can dig into the "E" all you want.

When it comes to the "B", simply move your thumb slightly, such that it no longer damps the string and pluck away.

As for damping the thinner strings beneath where you're playing, that falls to your left hand if necessary.

One negative of this technique is that your 3rd finger is always in use, and can't be deployed for 3 finger styles (like Gary Willis), but that's another whole technique itself.

I hardly ever play finger style , mainly plectrum .

So, if I've read this right, you don't want to play a 5 string bass but you're buying one because you can't get the 4 string version!

If you don't mind me saying, planning to only use the top 4 strings on a 5 string bass is a weird idea. If you buy a 5 string bass you should be intending to play all the notes on all strings. You're not buying this bass for the right reason. I predict you'll be selling it inside 6 months.

Correct ..so best I leave it then .

  10. I've only ever played 4 String , But I've seen a bass I've wanted for a long time ,the only thing is that it's a 5 string version It's going for a silly price So would I be able to play it the same as my 4 string & just ignore the 5th string or does it interfere with technique ? Has anyone had this experience ...I really wouldn't give it a second look but It's such a good price ?

I was toying with a retroglide. Is it really 800W or are the specs rubbish?

I've got the retroglide   , It's a great amp ….The 550 will have the amp section from the RM500 according to Mark.
