I play a fair bit of both and imo bass is easier to "pick up" than guitar, this is because you will usually be asked to play less challenging parts on bass. But on the other hand the bass is fundamentally harder to play than the guitar, by this i mean that it is harder to play the same part/phrase/whatever on bass than guitar.

May have been mentioned, and they are quite expensive but how about Kubicki x factor, light, 32" scale, ergonomically advanced, real easy to play and sounds great?

IMO, Claypool should not be included, he's not a virtuoso schooled player, neither is Flea.

I can see how claypool may not be considered a true virtuoso, perhaps his mastery of styles is not broad enough? But he certainly has attitude, goes beyond the idea that everything has to be perfect (perhaps too far beyond), and , for me at least generates some lightning. Totally agree about flea though, hes a good player who has come up with some great lines, but doesn't really stand out above the crowd in technique or originality in my view. -
personally, les claypool from primus, pretty much the only bass "gunslinger" who in my view can make it work in a (relatively) commercial band and plays anything id actually want to listen to

You could try checking out morphine for a 3 piece with an unusual and effective bass style. Different but cool.

I think it would work and probably sound good at low volume, but i believe hi fi speakers are usually pretty inefficient compared to pa cabs, so you probably wont get much volume for the amount of power you put in, making it quite likely you would damage the speakers in the search for enough volume. If you do it id be careful, especially if the speakers are decent.

Hi highwayone hope thinks are going well , it sounds to me like the pickups on your bass are not installed properly too, your kit should be fine for the kind of sound you describe.
If you didn't have this problem with the p bass i bought off you then that pretty much confirms that the pickups are the issue, id try rewiring them or getting a shop to do it if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. -
i agree with alot of the ops comments and im a vinyl fan too, but vinyl actually has a lower dynamic range than cds, alot of cds are very compressed and dynamically limited but this is modern production (the loudness war)rather than anything to do with cds or digital formats themselves.
-
I think this is only possible if you sit right at the front of the stage and all the other musicians sit right at the back! there just not very loud.

I think its similar to my eden metro, i would describe mine as quite warm for a solid state amp, and the semi parametric tone controls are very useful if you know how to use them. I think they are very good amps.
-
Im sure you would get a similar sound from a good quality modern precision and all valve amp. Ive often thought that a precision works extra well with a valve amp, much better than with a solid state amp. I probably prefer all basses through valve amps but with a precision the difference is extra large in my opinion and i often find a p bass pretty rough with a solid state amp but with a good valve amp awesome sound. Maybe because when the p bass was designed they all used valve amps.

You're right about the impedance and yes it would be parallel wiring. You need an 8 ohm cab to use with your combo not a 4 ohm cab.
-
I have an amp with a similar footswitch, i just plug in the footswitch and place it on top of the amp.

Some of them are more likely than others, but my choices would be....
Ampeg scroll bass - because they look amazing and are so obscure, plus jah wobble made one sound great.
Kubicki factor (not x factor) - i love the ex factor, think i may like the plain factor too, also pretty obscure
A Carl Thompson - Claypool fan too, plus so individual.
Wal mk1 or mk2 - to see what all the fuss is about.
Bootsy's Spacebass - the one with 5 pickups, should be fun. -
Hope i'm not being pedantic here, but tha'ts an x-factor not a factor, the factor does not have the two extra frets on the e string and i think is also 34" scale not 32" (or 36" on extended e string) like the x-factor.
-
Are you playing it after the initial tuning, I don't think its unusual for the strings tuning to change a little through atmospheric conditions or by being played for a bit and the difference between 440 and 442/443 hz would not be problematic in a band situation, I don't think anyone would notice (maybe the odd blind piano tuner). I don't think its much of a problem really.

Bought a Highway one P bass from Karl, all very easy and a pleasure to deal with.

Ive got an x factor and they are great basses, very playable indeed. Has anyone got a kubicki factor (not x factor or key factor), ive never seen one in real life and haven't even seen many pictures either.
-
I voted other, if a band who are on before me want to use my amp thats ok, bands playing after me have to use there own stuff, i dont want to wait around all night usually.
-
One thing to be aware of is that due to the bridge design some strings are not quite long enough, you can end up with the wrapped section being part of the speaking length, usually on the e string.
-
I think the magnums are great, love mine. The front pickup is good for dub and alot more besides, it has individual screwdriver operated level controls for each string. Back pickup is a kind of humbucker. You can get a pretty wide range of sounds.

Hi shaun, id check the specs of your amp carefully if i were you, i suspect its the total impedance of your amp that is 4 ohms and can drive 2 8ohm or 1 4ohm cabinet. I think your combo speaker is probably 8 ohms, if this is so (and your amp does have a total 4 ohm rating) then you should make sure your new cab is 8 ohms. Before you add another cab you should be sure of the impedance of your amp and combos speaker.

I think its partly because most people who want a fender do so because there favourite player from some classic 60s or 70s band used a fender and it was a four string not a five string. I think when most people think 5 string they think "modern".
What's the Bassiest Bass?

The bassiest bass is pretty much the one with a pickup furthest from the bridge, so as far as i know thats the aforementioned ovation magnum, the prs bass pictured earlier and the billy sheehen bass also have a pickup in this area so they may be contenders too, gibson ebo and rickenbacker also getting there.
