  1. I don’t play banjo at all, but my tuppences worth is based playing cello (CGDA) while being a bassist. The thought of it was a head wreck until I got one and just tried learning scales, and then a few pieces. They fell into place surprisingly easily. Improvising/jamming is a whole other ball game because my head/fingers want to default into the patterns/notes that I know from bass. So, before trying the new strings, maybe try it as is and learn a few tunes specifically for it?

  2. I would heartily recommend the two Epifani UL112 cabs for sale right now. I’m not affiliated in any way, these are just outstanding cabs. I’ve been using these for over 10 years, can handle pretty much every situation I need. Most of the time now, if it isn’t a loud wedding band, I just use one.

If you ever think you might sell that, let me know :)

    Si

Of all the basses I’ve had, this is the one that made Precisions click for me, and more than any other I can confidently say this is the one that’s staying with me to the end.

  4. My main bass for a few years now is a PB70-70US in Olympic White, with a rosewood fingerboard. Strung with light gauge Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats, something about it is just righteous. Really great instruments all round.

I don’t understand the model numbers though - other than US means it came with US pickups as stock. Anyone know what the 70 before the US means?

On the one hand, mistakes like this should not happen at that level of success/money etc, but on the other hand, it's nice that they do 😁

And they certainly do happen. As a resident of N.Ireland, we all got a chuckle at the recent Jubilee flag ‘mix up’ - I say mix up as in both cases it was probably a bit of ‘it’ll do rightly, sure what’s the difference?’ ;)

Ha ha, we are agreed then! What amp did you use this with Gareth?

Used it with an AI Clarus - think it was a Series 4 Plus. I might have that model number wrong, it was their current 2 channel head without effects.

***just remembered - it was an SL-2. I think.***

Have a look at a Toyota Avensis estate or hatch. Roomy, comfortable and bulletproof as far as reliability goes. Older Toyotas are ULEZ friendly (I have a 2003 Camry, which is fine). Not the cheapest option, but excellent in the long run.

Careful with the Avensis though - the older ones, 2010ish were perfect, but the newer ones don't seem to have a boot that opens up completely. Mine was great - would still be driving it now if someone hadn't driven into the front of me a few years ago.

  8. Excuse the late reply, only seeing this now. There was indeed a case once upon a time that exactly fits your bill, made by Summit. Had a detachable bag on the front for leads, etc. Bottom of the case sits just above your tailbone. Has a proper rucksack belt and it genuinely feels like you’re carrying nothing at all. Like others have said though, the downfall is that doorways are your enemy. Having said that I used mine in many’s an airport and tube station, you get used to it quickly.

Think I bought mine around 2000-ish, and stopped seeing ads in BassPlayer magazine within a few years. Case is still going strong, with my eldest kid taking it to school every week.

** I should add, I’m 5’9”, and clipped plenty of doorways so I can see how demand for these might not have met manufacturers expectations.**

  9. NOW £360 plus postage

Here is an Acoustic Image Upshot cab, with the optional mounting bracket for an amp head. Cab and bracket are in excellent condition, having only been gigged twice. A surprisingly great volume and projection from these. Selling only due to playing more electric bass these days. Still have the original box. Brand new the cab and bracket together are £541. Selling this for £400 £360 £330 plus postage.

What's the weight like on these? I know weight rarely (if ever) is listed on specs, but online spec describes this as 'relatively light' - still not that helpful really.

My Tidepool is 4.13kg on a digital luggage scale, but feels/balances much lighter.

  11. Yup, I have a Player Precision in Tidepool, with the maple neck. Just a damn fun bass to play. Build, feel and hardware are every bit as good as a 2008 American Std Precision I had, and a Fender Japan Precision that is my number 1 bass. Maybe the pickup could have a bit more character/attitude to it, but that's just personal preference.

  12. Diagnosed with basal joint arthritis in my left thumb. Tried Glucosamine Sulphate for a while years ago, didn’t seem to help. Back and forth to doctor over several years, physio, wrong advice from physio, etc. Nothing helped. Got to the point of me jokingly saying to the doctor ‘if you took my thumb off I’d thank you for it’.
Thought I’d give the Glucosamine a go again and this time it worked. No pain at all, maybe some slight stiffness. Only notice some pain if I forget to take it some day, then I’ll feel it that night/next morning.

  13. I think it matters even more so as, without it, it feels like a disconnect in the overall sound. The low end from the PA can make the stage amp sound like it has no body to it, leaving it sounding all mids/highs. I don’t like being too loud onstage but this headache of PA low end taking over can sometimes be a case of fight fire with fire.

  14. Both my Streamliner heads (600 and 900) have zero volume/power problems, and both coming up on 10 years old. They both have crackling volume pots, but as AgedHorse said, the problem is finding a qualified tech to service/repair them. A well established local guy here won’t touch mine because of the Class D/transistor side of it.
