That sounds like a great rig Gareth

It truly was. It was also truly overkill for everything but Simon’s gig. I sold my UL310 to buy two GenzBenz Focus410 cabs for the next tour. After that it was rental rigs. Still miss that 310 though - such a handy, potent rig.

  2. I had a 902c amp for a little while too. Only used to its full capabilities once - driving two Epifani 1x12s and two Aguilar 1x12s, in a pretty small club - but it was playing with Simon McBride, Deep Purple’s new guitarist, and he is a painfully loud player so it was much needed. On one tour with him I had a UL310 driven by a Genz Streamliner 600 and two UL112s on top driven by a GK MB500. That was fun.

There's one on eBay at the moment

Thanks for that! Found it with 26 minutes to go and no bids, but alas it’s collection only and there’s an Irish Sea inbetween. :(

  4. Yes in many ways. I was blessed with being taught by Mr Hunter. Whilst a devout classical head, with everything else deemed noise, he did allow me to play a video of Jimmy Page’s theremin solo in our class once.

Main lesson I got was following scores. This was long before I was reading music, but with those little yellow books of full scores by yer Beethovens and Mozarts, he’d put the music on, we would follow along and after a few minutes he’d stop the record and ask - what bar are we on? Bonus points if you could work out the beat and note. In a nutshell that showed my how written music worked. Eternally thankful.

  5. Totally get that, and I’m guilty as charged of wanting to try out the next thing that tickles my fancy. I suppose there are plenty of posts on ‘how do I get Geddy’s tone on ‘Tom Sawyer’, etc but those usually end up getting shot down with ‘just be yourself’ comments.

I’d love a section where you could post a clip of a tone you like, list the gear you currently own, and have experienced folks chime in with options and possibilities. Then maybe after exhausting options you can decide if more gear is what you need. I guess what I mean is I’m all for chatting on any forum as a means of getting the sounds I want, I just don’t want it to stoke the GAS every time.

  6. I’m stumped at the thought this thread, or similar on Talkbass, could be considered trolling. It’s talking about effects. Given that a main motivator to getting effects is to obtain a certain sound we’re chasing, I keep thinking that, after basses, amps, effects, etc there should be a section on how to get a certain sound.  Chances are you might be able to get it with something you already have. That would certainly keep me on the site a lot longer than just checking out stuff for sale that I don’t need.

  7. Yeah, but I don’t think this is ‘I don’t need effects’ - it’s more like ‘I have effects and I want to learn how to use them better’. I shudder thinking of how many pedals I bought and sold without really getting to know what they could really do.

  8. I keep coming back to this post in my head and really appreciating it. A change from more gigs to more teaching has resulted in me thinking ‘do I really need to have all these different sounds available at all times?’ and the answer is no. I’m getting closer to having ‘my’ sound without worrying about replicating someone else’s sound or an expected sound on a certain gig.

So as much as I’d love the new Frank Bello pedal by Tech21 I am insanely loving my Steve Harris and VTBassDI pedals more and more. Sometimes - shock horror - the sound you want is already in the gear you have. Who’d a thunk it?

  9. If you’re happy with the tone for both arco and pizz, I’d suggest something like a Morley Volume-Plus pedal. It can be set so pedal down is 100% of signal for arco and then pedal up at something like 70% for pizz. That way there’s no finding the sweet spot - the pedal is either all the way down or all the way up (makes for quick changes) but the volume ratios are set to what you want.

With the Morley you can also turn off this preset volume and get a regular volume pedal. I prefer this set up instead of using an EQ pedal as sometimes you want to make that pizz to arco change without anything being heard like a foot switch clicking.

  10. Love it. Had an HA3500 back in the late 90s/early 2000s. Also had a Ripper too which I totally regret selling despite it just not fitting my frame. Right arm felt so comfy on that big body but my left hand was stretched way too far to play a low F. Still miss it though.

Jeez that's a weird book, it's mostly filth too, nothing about music.

Yep - as big a fan as I am of Mingus I had to stop reading it. It got to be more than self indulgent, shall we say. A shame. For the same time period (and beyond) I’d highly recommend ‘From Birdland to Broadway’ by Bill Crow.

  12. I wear mine on my right hand, just ends up clacking off the neck otherwise for me.

For giggles - here’s my wedding ring - made by a wonderful ring maker in Dublin. Brought in a bunch of old Elites flat wound strings for inspiration.
