Could you and Steve come to some arrangement??
Thanks for the link, but I am not sure if Steve would be up for a trip to London to collect the basses?

Did you try to post an picture? Don't see any...
Yes, there should be a picture in the main post below the description, and I can see that other people, including me, can see it :) If you are interested but still can't see it, just pm me and I'll send you the pic.

I was meant to make some more detailed pictures, but it seems that there is no interest, so I'll wait with that until someone will request more pics.

[s]Also I forgot to mention that I might be interested in some trades, mainly for some budget 5 string bass, some budget synths, samplers, mixers or audio interfaces with at least 8 recording inputs (no firewire though please) or 8 or more track recorders (tape or digital). Could add some cash towards something quite interesting, but bear in mind that my budget is rather tight.[/s]

    Cheers

  3. £130 for both now.

    Hey guys,

So here it is. Two bitsa basses that can be put back to it's original form by swapping back the neck.

It's a Squier VM Precision Fretless and Harley Benton Jazz. I got the HB here, few months ago when I was looking for a Jazz body to put Squier neck on instead of buying fretless Jazz. This has worked well. Then I decided to put HB neck on the P body just to check it out. Turned out fine too. I actually gigged the P bass as it is now a couple of times when we had to play some tunes in drop tuning and I used it to swap quickly instead of fiddling with the tuning in between the tunes, sounded nice, and it has flats on it. Jazz sounds great too, but I just can't get motivated enough to put the time and effort into it, so I am sticking with the frets.

Please mind that the HB body was DIY reliced by myself (yes, I know, I did it for fun because I knew I wouldn't gig it), it isn't really bad and I tried to keep it realistic, so all I did was just some steel wool action, spanners and screwdrivers treatment as well as couple of sanded places to make it look worn. HB neck headstock also been painted black and I tagged it with a silver marker, but I still have some black left and will cover the tag up if you wish :D. Squier body and neck have been untouched though, but might have some tiny signs of use. The last thing to mention is that the HB heel for some reason is shorter than Squier so the top 2 screw holes were not alligned and both necks needed some drilling, but it doesn't affect the functionality, both basses are set up nicely with a decent action and necks of course can be swapped back without any problems.

I'd love to keep them but they do take some precious space and are not used enough to justify it, and I do have another P and another J that I use mostly, and I could do with some cash towards other musical things I'd like to get.

Here is a little reference pic where you can see both basses, I will probably make some more later.
This is collection only from North West London, however I can deliver for free within some reasonable distance, or meet half way.

Feel free to ask any questions. Price is basically for a Squier, which is less than a half price of what they are going brand new now, and you will get HB for free and it's up to you how you prefer them, I actually prefer fretless on the Jazz for that classic you know who sound.

You can't go far wrong with the great Larry Carlton.

Thank you, I know the name and I am sure these will be a great lessons.
However, I'd like to point out again that I am looking more for basic skills, not soloing or improv concepts. As I have mentioned, I want to learn just enough so I can record some basic melody and chords over the tunes that I am producing and these are more in funk / hip hop style, without having to beg some of my guitarist friends to come over and do it for me.

    EDIT:
What a world we live in today. Posted this in the morning, got a great advice right away, ordered a book, and got it delivered 5 minutes ago, and it's Sunday!

Thank you Dad3353, it looks like I will have enough work for a long time with this book and I think that is what I really wanted, and I am sure that I will be able to apply what I will learn from that into my needs.

You could do worse that this, for the very modest cost...

Mickey Baker's Complete Course In Jazz Guitar ..

Don't be put off by the title; have a look inside (or buy it on 'spec; it's worth every penny, whatever...), and give it a go. I bought this (in ignorance, at the time...) nearly fifty years ago, and still go through it now and again (I've bought it several times over, as copies got lost or worn out...). There is a Book 2, which is equally excellent, but start off with the first one, then go wild and splash out on the follow-up when you're ready.
Just my tuppence-worth; hope this helps. B)
It's quite cheap so I will probably give it a try. Jazz in the title is not putting me off, I am heavily into funk / fusion stuff so that's pretty close.

EDIT: Just got it off amazon, they offered me another Prime trial for free and got same day delivery, will have this book delivered today :D

YouTube is great for stuff, some rubbish obviously but some brilliant stuff. I am entirely self taught on the bass and found some brilliant tutorials on there. You will quickly work out who is worth listening to and who isn't.

I guess the biggest problem with this for me is the time. Youtube can be invaluable resource, but finding a good one takes time now as there is so many people following up successful online tutors.

  6. Yes, you read that right!

If you google that topic, there is a bunch of results for guitarist trying to take our job and play bass whenever they can, but there is nothing the other way around.

I am playing bass for over 10 years now and I want to buy a cheap guitar and learn some basics. Not because I want to go and steal guitarists gigs :D, but for my own needs. I am a producer and one of the things I am missing is to have a guitar available for when I need it (when I am in the zone) to record some chords and maybe some simple melodies.

Any advice on where to start, maybe some book advice etc. There is thousands of books, websites etc so I'd like to get some tips what to get after purchasing the guitar. Just want to point out that I do not need any method that is covering music theory etc, I can read, I know my scales and chords, I am looking for pure technical stuff, how to play certain chords and voicings etc.

Will appreciate any help on that topic.

  7. Hey guys,

Just wanted to know if anyone could help me with replacing the knobs on my 50's P Bass. Got it few months ago and it came with gold bridge and gold knobs installed. The owner included the original bridge, but didn't have the original knobs. I wanted to bring it back to the chrome as I don't really like the gold hardware on it (and tuners are chrome too).

So, first I tried to put some knobs that I have taken out from a Squier P bass body that I had lying around from a project, but these were on a different shaft style (spline) and didn't fit, so I got a set from ebay. According to the description, these should fit on a shaft up to 6mm diameter, but these do not fit too.

I have tried to measure the pots but these are slightly tapered on the top, so I can't really be accurate with a normal ruler, same with knobs, and when I lay it on the pots and knobs, it all really look like 6mm, but obviously there must be some size difference as the gold one fit and silver don't. Now I am not sure if the replacement ones are incorrect as these were cheap 5 quid ones, or if the pots are indeed bigger than 6mm.

I have tried to google it, and I think that the original Fender part is 0991366000, which says 1/4" and that is equivalent of something like 6.35mm, and then when I search for replacement knobs of 1/4", usually in the description it says 1/4" - 6mm, and that makes me even more confused, and on the original Fender part in most places, details just say 1/4". I just don't want to spend 20 or more quid on original Fender knobs just to find that these do not fit too. So, now, do you think that I might have non original pots installed? Do you know of any replacement knobs with bigger diameter than 6mm, with flat top (want to keep it as close to the Fender as I can)?

  8. Tim got in touch with me to buy Tokai Hard Puncher from me.

He came to see the bass the next day, we had a good communication. He is a very nice guy, we had a nice chat about basses and music.

Thanks again Tim, hope you will enjoy the bass. Highly recommended basschater :)

  9. Hey guys,
I hate doing this, but that time came again where my bank account state makes me feel uncomfortable.

I got this beauty last year, here on basschat. This is a link to the original thread that still has links to more detailed pictures http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry3185324

Basically looking to get back what I paid for it. Better than any 70's Fender I have ever played, nicely aged and according to the previous owner it was refretted at some point and frets look perfect. I have put Thomastik flats on it. It didn't came with any case or gig bag, but I will add a generic gig bag to the sale.

I am based in London (North-West, very close to Brent Cross shopping centre) and for the time being I'd prefer collection, but could drop it off for free within reasonable distance in London, or for some extra petrol money if a bit further. Might consider trying to look for a box somewhere if there will be no interest nearby.

    No trades I'm afraid.

You are more than welcome to pop in and try it yourself, also please check my feedback.

You wouldn't be interested in just swapping the neck would you ? I have home-finished bass with a CV Jazz bass neck that I'd like to convert to fretless, and as your fretless neck looks like a jazz neck it'd suit me fine.

Whereabouts in London are you ?
Hey, thanks for asking, but I was more after the Jazz Bass tone than fretted neck.

Ended up picking up Harley Benton jazz from here and just swapped the necks and to finish off this story, Squier is no longer a Squier and is withdrawn. Thanks for all the interest anyway guys :)

If anyone is interested in a body though, please give me a shout.

If it's of any help, my local guitar shop will sell me a shipping box for £3.00. That and a plethora of bubble wrap and it will be good for shipping. appreciate your local guitar store may not be so helpful.....the other source for shipping boxes is a bike shop - they are usually happy to give them away, but some cardboard engineering might be involved

That's my Scouts Helpers badge work done for today!
Thanks. There is one shop in London that I have spent over 3k on basses so I guess they might help me out with that :)

The problem you have is that you won't post it, I was interested until I saw that. But 500 miles is a long way to go.
That's true, I understand, but unfortunately I just don't have anything to pack it in. I might be picking some cheap bass today and I think it comes with a gig bag, and if that's the case I might consider posting it if I will be able to sort out a box.
