1. My vote goes to Phil Jones. I'd consider something like a PB100 powered cab. As it has a line input, you could put any kind of preamp in front to get the colour you want. You could add further PB100's if you needed more power.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with a PA cab, as most single cabs don't have the low frequency extension and don't sound as good as a Phil Jones with a low B. Also, who needs tweeters for bass, unless you want to introduce some hiss :)

  3. There are several options. If you need to use the Mac, you will need some kind of device to convert the analogue hi-Z output of your bass to a digital signal. There are in-line type devices, desktop audio interfaces, rack mount interfaces etc. The other option is to use a dedicated bass preamp / headphone unit, such as a PJB BigHead or Zoom unit, which could also be used standalone. It will also depend whether you want to noodle along to a backing track or not, and on your budget.

  4. Somewhat of a mystery it seems. If the luthier didn't spot anything either it'll be trial and error to diagnose whether there's anything wrong, or it's simply down to the different G strings themselves. You may have to settle for a compromise for now and find a G string that works 'best' for both slap and pizz but may not necessary excel in either.

The soundpost needs to be in the correct position to get the most out of the bass, and it's worth experimenting to find the 'best' position. If you trust the luthier (and can afford it), then get a new soundpost fitted, as this could make the difference.

    Good luck with your quest.

  5. The late Bob Brozman used an sm57. If you need to use a mic, a dynamic is a better bet. Either a Shure sm57 or a Beyerdynamic m201, as they're more resistant to feedback. The alternative is to fit a Fishman resonator pickup system.

  6. The next step would be to check the setup. Are the slots in the nut and bridge all similar (compared with the other strings)? Is the string seating properly? If you get a different response with different G strings, it could be down to how the string sits in the slots. If it sounds thin and nasal, it suggests the energy is not being transferred through the bridge to the body. Is there anything else attached to the G string or bridge that could affect tone?

  7. I'm running a similar setup, but with a Focusrite Forte instead.

I'm presuming your input and output devices are set as the Focusrite in Garageband preferences. To hear the bass in Garageband, you'll need to add it as a new track. That 'should' be all.

    Hope this helps.

  8. Thanks for sharing.

This is only my view, and should be read in a positive light (I'm middle aged and slightly grumpy, thus feel free to ignore me)

The keys and drums could've been a bit more 'up front'. The guitar is perhaps a bit grungy / bottom heavy, competing with the bass low down. Prefer more 'punch' in the kick. Perhaps slightly 'over-compressed' for my taste. Most importantly, that Wal tone should've been brought out more - some lovely lines in there :)

Loved the musicianship and feel. Keep up the good work.
