1. This is a crafty way to list a shockingly loud Electrovoice DL10X mid bass driver loaded into my humble homemade cab . The Cab is 70 year old finger-jointed pine from an old door frame and the front plate is mahogany from a fireplace .
The speaker is 300 watts into 8 ohms , more technical information can be found on www.usspeaker.com or look in the archives of the Electrovoice website as this is a discontinued model . I am fully expecting to sell speaker sans cab .
It is a weighty beast at 19 lbs ( 8.6Kgs ) , but this one will rattle the windows without breaking into a sweat . If you are one of those clever bods who can design and build proper enclosures , this would be a great compact speaker choice . The speaker was bought ex-demo /shop- used from Blue Aran , has been tested by them ( as per sticker ) and works phenomenally well in my humble cab attempt .
This was not cheap , so I am asking £60 shipped to UK mainland , about half what I paid for it . I am selling off some of my speakers as the Mrs is starting to get hacked off with the growing mountain of Cabs in the spare room .
I am based on the Isle if Wight , can bring over to Southampton , Portsmouth + Lymington .
Many Thanks for looking .

2. Singing with a 6 string is vastly easier than singing whilst playing a bass. There is a huge temptation to sing on the beat of each bass note , you have to separate the vocal from the bass line . Mark King is good at this , but Sting is a true master at singing smoothly over odd time signature bass lines .
Like everything in life , it takes practice.

Yolanda Charles does a great YouTube tutorial on this subject.

3. Jeans and the " gig T- shirt " , usually something unusual and not music related .
I'm not a big fan of people who wear Marshall or Gibson T-shirts , unless they are in another band .
No baseball caps , I'm too old to be a Bieber look a like .

4. My main gigging rig was two Markbass 604's to form a mini 8x10 .
There certainly is no lack of depth as these will easily fill the room with a deep "subby " sound which seems to contradict the small 6 inch speakers and they are incredibly loud for their size. Very portable too and a very easy lift.
The only issue with Markbass cabs are they tend to get lost or swamped if playing in a busy rock band , hence the purchase of a Vanderkley 2x12 which cuts through the double guitar onslaught .
Just my 2p.

5. Playing a P-bass through a Peavey TKO or TNT combo is great , they are loud , and tougher than John Wayne , virtually bomb proof gear which can now be bought for peanuts . I think the sound of the 15 " speakers are great , if you can put up with the weight , I'd say go for it .

6. Record labels ??
I was in a tidy little four piece rock band in North Devon , great line up which went down really well at all the gigs .
Singer left the band due to apparently being signed up by a Record label . Obviously the band collapsed .
A few months later , saw said singer behind the counter of fast food burger bar.
Still haven't seen him hit the big time . ( only the fries counter )

7. Prohibitive price of beer + Smoking ban + poor economic climate = Staying at home .
I have a pretty good job , but I rarely go to the pub anymore , if me + mrs do go out and watch a band and have two beers each , that's £16 , which easily pays for a Sainsbury take away curry and a decent bottle of wine .
The only time good audiences are guaranteed is when we have a festival / event which has live music .

8. A drunk ,orange ,high heeled pissed as a fart platinum blonde slapper ????
Try a pub with a few miserable ,flat cap , jack Russell owning misogynist punters huddled round the bar .
Again , I fully empathise with your sentiments , as an " in between bands "bassist " , I just like doing the gig .
Zero audience is a great opportunity to try new stuff ( reggae-fy Hey Joe for instance )

9. You had a crowd ??
Seriously , I empathise with you entirely , have been there and done gigs to bar staff and the dog in the corner , only to be told that the pub is normally packed ,but the young farmers ball / some ones leaving do / wake is in the pub down the road .
I just love playing with fellow musicians , for me - that's enough.

10. A bit of a feeler at the moment , some-one may know some-one looking for one of these .
I bought this new from Mark Hopkin at guitars4you ( purveyors of fine guitars ) a few years back , I always wanted a Trussart and this one ticked the boxes .
Maple Neck
Seymour Duncan Antiquities pick ups
Holey back panel
Nice understated Gator scratchplate - some can look a bit like Christmas trees .
C&G faux gator skin Hardcase
£2200 to include standard courier delivery to Mainland UK ( new price £3200 , if you can find one )
Sounds fantastic , I have taken this to a few gigs to let more talented guitarists have a go , and I have to prise it out of their hands at the end of the set .
Tried to show the guitar as best I can in Photos , based in Isle of Wight , can bring over to Southampton ,Portsmouth or Lymington in person .
Many Thanks
Martin

11. I agree with Clarky , relative to other instruments , basses are dirt cheap .
Just sold an Alleva Coppola back to Happy jack for £2k to fund getting a better classical guitar .
" Student " models are found around the £2000 to £3000 mark , Luthier built are about £5000 and a Greg Smallman (the Fodera equivilant ? ) are £20 000 to £25 000.
I definately would not class the Alleva as a student model bass .

12. Play both guitar and bass for about the same amount of time ( 30 years ) Much prefer acoustic to electric guitar , and prefer nylon classical guitar to steel string .
Big advantage to being a guitar playing bass player is being able to read the fret board of the other guys in the band , so playing unfamiliar songs or jamming is a whole lot easier ( providing your not standing behind the guitarist )

13. Being " shelved " from a band sounds pretty cr@p to me , it's no fun being given the elbow from a band for whatever reason.
If all the gear you acquired was for the particular band that you played in , by all means sell it on and try something new , however if the Bongo is your signature bass, keep it for practice / auditions .
It can be difficult to slot straight back into a great band , you really do have to go through quite a few dodgy auditions before finding like minded people , and this will take longer than 6 months .
Try learning a different instrument and just enjoy meeting other muso's when trying out for other bands .
Take the rough with the smooth and keep positive !
Best Wishes
Martin

14. No point in getting arsey if some drunk punter requests a song , even better if you can bang out a half decent rendition of the requested song . We were playing a real spit and sawdust pub when some drunken chap kept requesting " Comfortably Numb " . The singer / rythm guitarist knew the words /chords so we did the song on spur of the moment with the guitarist shouting out the chord changes as we went along , great fun had by all . The punter came up afterwards and thanked us profusely for our efforts as this was one of his wife's favourite songs and she had passed away a few weeks ago . The band got a round of drinks and we seemed to make this chaps night , I don't think the punters really expect everything to be note perfect anyway .
