I use new ones of those strings on my series II, as the top end is crisp but smoother than regular steels. But once they loose their brightness, i then move them to my europa which is the bass i use for warmer music such as reggae. It means i can use less eq to get the tone i want.

I would look more at your pre / amp setup for any changes that might have happened since the start of covid. The fact that you have your power amp on full will obvoiusly magnify any problems in your signal chain. Could it be the vibrations from the low frequencies shaking a dry joint / dirty connection / dodgy patch lead and causing the "crack"? Can you try another amp?

it tends not to happen when the amp is on full volume which is how I've always used power amps in my rig previously with no such issue. When it's on full it's too loud to dig in and be near the cab so but when it's under about 3/4 and playing with emphasis,   that's when the crack sound appears if I play the lower two strings. 

I have never blown speaker before so don't really know what to listen for to determine this. I have been getting my gear out at home to check it all out as there are some gigs looming.  I haven't powered up my rig for most of the Covid-19 pandemic period and if so just quietly. 

My normal way of using my rack system is to have the power amp on full and bring up my pre-amp gain (usually only up to 2 or 3 max) till I find a good balance and as my basses are active, the quality of sound doesn't suffer if the bass is on low.

Anyway what is happening is that when I dig in a moderate volume on bass with the above arrangement, there is a loud crack sound from the speaker if I hit anything low G and below on the E or B strings.

I have tried both my BTII and BBII cabs and both exhibit the same noise.

Any idea what is going on?

Yep that is true, i went there about a month or so ago to get a fret dressing and new bridge saddles cut for my alembic and I got it back in 3 weeks and I was told they are working full bore on their own instruments and only take on the odd few simple jobs. 

Good thread, i have been thinking of one as a replacement for my pjb big head in which the battery is dead, no longer charges, and the usb socket no longer connects consistently. Plus i could use it for and gigs where i won't be using my own rig and can plug directly into a the power amp section of a backline. Usually they have more knobs and sliders than i know what to do with. The stereo option would be good when using my stereo basses into a mono head, plus a decent DI to the PA.

Is hanging the bass on the wall with a hanger type grabber out of the question?

I am about to get hold of a guitar body and a neck which belongs to a lifelong friend that needs making into a solid body electric guitar. It's a long story but I will. make it short. The body and neck were bought by his late father in the mid/late 1970's with the idea of my friend making his own guitar. But that never happened and now I have got hold of the parts without him knowing and want to complete the instrument and give it to him. I don't have the skills to build it and I don't want to spend a fortune for a custom builder like Jaydee etc to finish it as my mate has not played the guitar since the 70's. I am looking for someone local to Birmingham who would be able to take the body and neck and make a complete guitar from it. It does not need to be a high end guitar with high end pickups, basically it just needs to work and be built to a good standard as it will no doubt just be hung on the wall of his home as a sentimental item. The body from memory is mahogany and styled as a somewhere between a Gibson SG and a Yamaha SG but with a slab cut. The neck i think is a stratocaster style neck but without a fretboard or hardware.

Any one local who is interested in taking this on please PM me and we can exchange numbers and have a chat about what can be done and costs timescales etc. His birthday is in August so would be good to get it done by the end of that month if possible.

OK, I had no idea there was a classic pickup position for a P bass or where it is supposed to be.
I know there is a lot of love and passion for P-basses on BC, hence I was careful not to call mine a P-bass only that it has P-style pickups.

I've never played a fender P bass but I have a non fender bass with P-style pickups and it is the least played of my basses. It's not a sound I could use all the time. In fact when I bought it i didn't really understand what a P bass was. It was an online purchase unheard and it is a great bass. I used it mostly when I was in the house band at a local pub playing 50's, 60's and 70's classic rock and pop stuff. 

My basses came with the classic G & G cases but I find they are not durable for gigging as the edge of the case where the handle is fitted eventually bends and the catches/locks no longer line up and stay secure.

I have found the Scott Dixon aluminium cases to be superb. Lightweight and extremely strong and durable. I use one of these for my strat and another coffin style case for my bass. I plan to order a custom one for another of my basses as it is a bit tight for my other basses. They now do custom inserts so it can be shaped to fit your bass/guitar better.

Still no interest so i'm looking at converting it into an isolation guitar speaker cabinet for recording. I couldn't give it away because no-one wanted such a heavy cab. Cest la vie.

I had the same worry as you. I'm well known locally for not letting anyone play my basses and I did bring three alembic basses to the bash last time. I had a hard time switching off my paranoia but managed to but I'm not sure I would do it again. I have to say that everyone who asked to play was respectful and could probably see the fear on my face. I didn't play many other basses though, again that is not one of my things to do. 

I was down there just yesterday afternoon to collect my bass (not a Jaydee) from having a fret dressing and new saddles cut. The bass plays like a dream now and the action is a fair bit lower than it was previously which is good. They do still have a long waiting list for new basses.
