1. All, Well sadly my financial situation won't allow me to keep my 2480, I guess if I was out recording people and making money from it it'd be different, but alas I've never done that otehr than with my own band in a rehersal studio. If you want to get into recording sessions and want a top notch system, it doesn't get any better than this. This 2480 is *FULLY* loaded with every extra you'll ever need! So, Here's what's on offer ;- - VS-2480 24 track recorder with latest OS (2.504 IIRC) dustcover - 120G HDD (spare 80Gb HDD preformatted and loaded ready to go) - Meter Bridge (rare) - 3 * VS8F2 - 1 * VS8F3 - Roland, LA2A, 1176 and T-Racks plugins (the best compressor, limiter and mastering tools around!) - External DVD+/-R drive - 14" LCD, mini keybard and trackball - Flight case (non roland, but hard case) - UPS + Cables - Quicklok Z stand, with speaker arms, shelf and a 3U 19" rack bracket - VS Encyclopedia + DVD, Roland DVD, all User guides (originals) Never been gigged, though used twice in a rehersal studio to record my band, and at home during mixing. Pictures of it ;- More pictures available upon request. The price for it all, as above is 1500 UKP. I'd prefer collection and I can deliver within a reasonable distance of Worcester if you're willing to contribute towards petrol costs. Paul
2. Sadly, I have an Ashdown MAG300, with 15" cab, and 2x10 + Horn cab already, other wise I'd have been interested.
3. * bump * I can' beleive no-one's interested in this.
4. hi, I had a conversation with Mike about this bass. He remembers getting a VERY VERY heavy peice of wood in, and thinking he'd never be able to sell it because of the weight. A few months later a guy came in wanting the heaviest bass he had. Mike showed him the stock ones and he wasn't happy. So Mike showed him this lump of wood, the guy was happy. Mike built this bass and when I sent it to him for the new neck his work buddy apparantly speant a couple of hours playing it and asked "why don't we build them like this anymore?". In short, It's heavy, but it sounds superb. Anyway, if it's not gone by xmas, I'll have to send it down to that bass place down in london, something I'm really not keen to do as, whilst it's here I can still play it occasionally. You're welcome to come and try it at my place, or if you live within a reasonable distance of Malvern/Hereford I'll visit you.
5.
you could get Mike to make you a lighter body?
hehe, I may aswell buy a new bass :-) Anyway, for someone with adequate shoulders it's worth every ounze of the weight. If you want to come to my place and try it, you're welcome to. Paul
6.
Can I ask whether the pickups are single coil or humbuckers please? And could you tell me a bit more about exactly what the control layout is too?
Mark, They're humbuckers. It has active electronics, Bass, middle, trebble, plus a balance for pickups and a volume control. One switch turns off the active electronics, the other does nothing (it did switch on/off the LEDs in the old mangled neck). Paul
7. All, Price Lowered to £500, I'd prefer collection (Hereford) but I can deliver within a reasonable distance as long as you don't mind contributing towards petrol costs. Paul Maddox
8. Well, It's completed. How does it sound? Awesome Those Seymour Duncan pickups are worth *EVERY* single penny. For those of you interested in a bit more detail you can read my blog post on it, but be warned, it's not for the feint of heart. The are graphic pictures of a bass being hacked with a chisel and drill! Custom Bass Blog
9. Thanks, This was pretty much the opinion I was coming too. Now I need to make some holes in my bass, now it get's scary!
10. All, Ok, got my first DIY bass, all good. It's assembled (pics are somewhere around here). It's a J bass (two standard J pickups) and I've received my Seymour Duncan STKJ2 Hot stack (WOW! what a sound) and my SPB2 Hotpickups. So two questions, 1) Which way round to position the P pickups? the most common configuration seems to have the D+G pickup nearer the bridge, but I've been reseraching and many people seem to think the E+A pickup should be nearer he bridge. Anyone any opinions and why? 2) I've never used a router before, I assume I'll need to clamp down my bass body, mark the position of the P pickup holes, and take my time and make sure I don't go too deep. I plan on using the existing J pickup hole as the starting point for both halves of the P pickup holes, so I shouldn't need to pre-drill any corners or start points. I'm going to buy myself a router (slightly more than renting, but I've had enough fun with this project that I"m going to build a second so It'll come in handy in future), any advice on what ttype of bit I need? Oh, I've also made my own pick guard for the P pickup which currently has no holes for pickups as I'll wait until the P's are in place before doing that. I've also got enough plastic left to do another two if I'm not happy. Any/all advice very much welcomed. Paul
11. last bump before listing on evil bay. I'm open to offers as I really do NOT want to put this on evil bay
12. bump, If no-one wants it by the end of the month, it'll have to go on evil bay (sigh)
13. Anyone interested? I really do not want to put it on ebay.

EGG BOXES?

You can get sound proofing tiles (12" squares with lots of pyramids on) these will help 'deaden' a room. To TRULY sound proof a room, you need to build a room inside a room, and suspend the whole room on rubber shock mounts. It'd cost you thousands. In short, if you want a quieter room to record in, and a better sounding room, get some pyramid tiles from ebay (cheap enough if you hunt a little) and focus on the ceiling and two of the walls. Put cheap carpets/rugs on the floor and if you can, buy/build a bass trap for the 'plain wall'. You don't want a totally 'dead' room, but you need one that doesn't "ring". If you want to stop noise getting 'out' of the room and annoying your neighbours, then you're eaither looking at a suspended room (ie. room inside a room) or finding somewhere else to practice/record/mix. Recordings

Thanks guys, I've got a long way to go with mixing and recording yet but I'm getting there. In fairness to the drums, this was recording on the 'house' drum kit at a re-hersal studio, which I am sure has seen *much* better days. We'll be re-recording these tunes and the rest of the 11 we've written in a month or so. Paul
16. Import duty was just over 43 quid, cost of the kit was 500 dollars (inc postage). Well worth it for the kit. So, that's about 300 quid, which ain't bad for a jazz bass copy, it plays well and sounds good too. I'll be looking at getting some decent strings when I get back from holiday. I just noticed that there's a wdmusic.co.uk, they sell bodies, necks and hardware kits, but it would cost a *LOT* more to buy it that way! Paul
17. maybe it's another type of ash? can't be sure.. I'll weigh it over the weekend (if I can find some bathroom scales). Paul
18. A Bargin maybe, but fair, I paid £550 for this about 2 years back, had a new neck fitted a year ago (around £250) so £650 seems fair, but if anyone wants to pay more, I shan't argue :-) You're welcome to try before you buy or collect, but I live in Hereford which is a million miles from civilisation.
19. Charic, That's what I was planning. Though finding the dual pots and knobs is proving a little awkward at the moment. There's still time. Paul
20. They could do with adding the missing pages from their website. I got a bit fed up of looking after seeing lots of "under construction" and "404 page not found". If you have no pictures and no info on a product, don't list it on your website.
21. All, This is hard for me to do as I *REALLY* love this bass, but it's killing my shoulder. This bass sounds monsterous, and has *SUCH* a deep tone it's just not true. This is probably down to the fact that bass weighes a *TONNE*. I'm looking for £500. (**Price Changed 10/11/07**) Shipping will be around £65 (like I say, it weighes a LOT) and I'll throw in the hard case aswell. Its got a swamp ash body (I beleive, Mike Walsh can tell you more), black hardware, custom Iceni heartland pickups and active EQ. Mike made me a new neck, fitted and set it up in july last year... to play this bass is too love it, but ou'll need shoulders like atlas. Mike knows most of the history of this guitar and remembers selling it originally about 7 years ago. Like I say, I hate to see it go, but 'm not getting any younger.
22. I've got the variax 700 electric (in red), and it's a GREAT guitar, fantastic action and superb sounds. But, for a bass, I dunno, I tried the variax bass and to be honest I wasn't impressed. It played ok, and sounded ok, but it didn't 'do it' for me. Also, aesthetically, I think they look pants, but that's just my opinion.
23. Yep, I speant about 2 hours setting up/playing/adjusting the action. It plays great now. I need to 'round off' the edges of the fretts a little as they catch my fingers, but it plays su[prisingly well. I've ordered a seymour duncan STK-J2 in the bridge position and an SPM-2 for the mid position, which means I'll need to route the mid pickup and build a custom scratchplate, no big problem. I'm still thinking about putting a third pickup right below the neck, giving me a J-P-J pickup combination, I might give that a try once the Seymour Duncans arrive and before I make the custom scratch plate. Then I want to replace the passive electronics with my own active, three volumes and three tones, which may require more body routing, unless I do it using Surface mount parts.
