I've left many bands entirely due to dull and predictable set lists, drawn up to appeal to the lowest common denominator to whit several tunes mentioned - Cocaine, SHA, Rockin in The Free World, anything by Oasis, Mustang Sally plus Valerie, Brown Eyed Girl, Living on A Prayer, Sex on Fire, Mr Brightside, Caroline, Sweet Caroline and Alright Now. If I never hear any of these again it'll be too soon.

See, some of those are absolute mainstays of the function/wedding scene to get people on the dancefloor, so while I'm no fan of them, they very definitely have their place in the set of many gigging bands.

Oasis however, no. As a rule there's always a better song available that's not by Oasis.

  2. Personally, anything by Oasis. I have an unnatural dislike of them; having missed them in their heyday, my only connection with Oasis songs is them being lowest common denominator pub rock anthems for drunk people.

  3. Hello,

Up for sale is my rather lovely 1999 Yamaha RBX765A five string bass, made in Taiwan.

It’s 34” scale, active, two humbuckers, rosewood fingerboard etc and I suspect an alder body whose grain is visibly thru the translucent red finish.

I bought this in January and have loved playing it - however my ongoing knackered shoulder seems to have other ideas and I’m going to keep looking for something lighter-weight.

Its not heavy by any means - pretty much bang on the 4kg mark on my electronic luggage scales.

Same condition as when I bought it, as I’ve taken it to one rehearsal and no gigs yet.
Was newly-string with roundwounds just before I bought it so they still have plenty of life in them. Currently set to medium/low action, and only minimal signs of any fretwear despite it being a 24-year-old bass.

Comes with a functional and clean but quite tatty padded gigbag, and a Comfort Strapp in similar condition can be thrown in too if needed (alas it was too short for me).

Not going to ship overseas, but happy to post at buyer’s cost or meet if practical. Or you’re more than welcome to try it out at my place at proper volume.

    NOW SOLD ELSEWHERE

Any questions, feel free to give us a shout.

    Cheers

  4. I’ve got both rounds and flats on different basses. I find flats sound a bit rubbish on their own but sit beautifully in a mix at a gig, which to me is the acid test anyway.

Mine are La Bella Deep Talking Bass 43-104 I think the gauge is, so not too heavy. And La Bella Mustangs for my mustang.

Saying that, my Yamaha with D’Addario NYXL nickel roundwounds is a more versatile sound, and though it came wearing chromes, the roundwounds just suit its character better.

But I’ve taken flats or rounds to gigs with the same bands and

no one has noticed a difference worth mentioning for the vast majority of stuff.

  5. Yup I’m another bloke knocking 50 with a knackered shoulder and a MIJ Mustang bass I swear by. They’re not the same as a P but they are the same ball park with an attitude all of their own, and well worth having.

I’ve whittled myself down to three basses all under 3.8kg which I can cope with, but the shorter scale and smaller neck on the Mustang is just an absolute bonus for long gigs, and it still sounds killer.

  6. If anything for me it’s a guitar - an Epiphone Gary Clarke Jnr Casino I had a few years ago. It just sang and made me want to play it continually.

I don’t play much electric guitar and when it came to selling something I kept my old MIJ strat which is in truth more  versatile.

But I never play it - I’d have played the Epiphone more… 🙁

  7. I think my main rig is entirely from the BC classifieds anyway, and all under £300 per item.

    Little Mark head

    Markbass 2 x 10 cabs

    Yamaha BB604 bass

    Comfort Strapp

PS I’m pretty certain there’s usually something close to these items for sale on here.

  8. I don't think it's absolute that everyone in a band is paid equally - depending on the circumstances if you're an occasional hired hand rather than putting money into the upkeep of the band, if you're getting extra petrol money etc.

What I do think is essential is honesty and openness over how much you are getting paid.

On one hand if you've accepted the amount of money you've been offered for a gig, it shouldn't matter what someone else is getting (I'm thinking of "unequal" situations, such as being part of a "name act's" backing band).

But you wouldn't expect jam night mates, contributing equal amounts of effort in a long-running arrangement, to regularly be pocketing more money and not telling you.

I'd want to hear them justify their reasons, or forget it.

Stock is boring, expensive and uninspiring for a bassist.

    Fender/Squier/Jackson

    Ibanez

    Yamaha

    Sandberg

    Musicman/Sterling

    That's it.

That sounds pretty a decent selection to me, as a regular player not into expensive boutique kit (ie I can’t afford it!)

I love that Hustle Drive. I use mine mostly on guitar but it's very good on bass too. GLWTS!

You’re not wrong there - i hadn’t thought of using them for bass but I’ve just tried it and it sounds pretty good.
I’d previously tried the Pure Boost for bass but it didn’t really do it for me. But the Hustle Drive hmm. That’s not bad at all.

  11. Hello,

I don’t really play electric guitar anymore, hence me selling these two pedals which i originally used to drive a Fender Hot Rod deluxe combo.

The Hustle Drive is a distortion pedal with switchable high peak and low peak settings, volume and tone controls and drive dial.

The Pure Boost is, as it sounds, a clean boost pedal with bass, treble, volume and gain controls.

Both nice bits of kit in really

good condition as I’ve barely used them. Just surplus to my needs these days.

The going rate new seems to be £45-£49 each for these so I’m happy with £30 each or £50 for the pair plus a bit of postage.

They don’t have their boxes anymore but I’ll package them up nicely with bubble wrap etc.

  12. Ah cool. Mine is a 2013 MIJ model and didn’t come with a case (or had been lost along the way before I got it).

Haven’t tried the Nordstrands. I did think about swapping the pickups but I’ve gigged it solid for the last year and a half and never felt the need to change the sound as it’s perfectly good.

I wanted a red tort or pearl white plate but they were both rare and/or expensive so I went with a white one that cost about a tenner instead. Works for me!

  13. Great basses. I have the exact same one though I swapped the pickguard for a white one purely for cosmetic / vanity reasons!

Yes - the La Bella mustang set are brilliant - not thuddy and dead at all - surprisingly musical, smooth and warm on mine.
I’m well jealous you’ve got a hard case that fits yours tho! What is it?
