2.
Hi All,

I'm after your usual good advice.

I'm thinking of having my P bass refined after trying to 'relic' is like an absolute d***k head a couple of months ago.

I originally went to Manchester Guitar Tech but he's booked up until into next year. He recomended Spectrum Guitar Finishes.

I have received a quote of (including fitting of Seymour Duncan SPB-3) :

To: completely strip old finish back to bare wood. £35.00
To: remove neck & all parts, wire in new pickup, refit parts etc. & carry out set up. £50.00
To: prepare & lacquer in 'Vintage White' nitro cellulose, flat & polish etc. £220.00

Other comments they have noted are:
We are a U.K. company that has recently relocated to Spain.
We would arrange courier collection from you, this costs £24.00
We would courier back to you using Fedex FREE OF CHARGE.
Turn round time is 4 weeks (because of the cellulose) from the time we receive it.

I would really appreciate your opinions on this one as I have never had such work done to my guitars.

    Thanks guys!
3.
Hi Chaps,

Can anyone point me at a good 'on-line' source for Lemon Oil for cleaning and dressing my fret board? Looking for something that’s good quality, you guys know these things.

    Thanks

    Oggy :)
I use and always have used Sadolin.for the last 15 to 20 years...worktop oil.......apply sparingly and leave overnight and rub over with a soft cloth next morning its about 20 times cheaper than Dunlop and does just as good a job even possibly better.......if you want to colour the board just add a few drops of a preparatory wood dye to the sadolin and work in softly with fine gauge steel wool........removing any residue when dry by buffing with a clean lint free cloth and I use an old soft shoe brush...........never had one single problem

Lemon oils are just a rip off

  4. First a MIJ Fender 51 precision reissue mint and hardcase...some 15 years old I am told but looks like it aint been out the shop.its that clean>>>!!
Second a 1974 Ibanez Rikki copy fitted with Hipshot but also has the original bridge, uses same holes so can be returned to rikki type brige comes with TKL hardcase, this is the best playing copy of a Ric I have had..ever...FACT and I have never seen a cleaner fresher example and I have had a few in my time.
LAST a 70's Maya Telecaster bass in great condition given age,set up with flats ready to rock n GROWL....

All these guitars are superb examples.....you will not be getting a pile of Sh**e from me....Garunteed

    Now the offensive bit........................... :)

Im looking for something intersting with 6 strings thats not a bass :)

Primarily I play Teles & 335's nowadays but .....try me with ANYTHING you never know.....Im in the market for a good amp too......

I dont bite so feel free to pose the questions

  5.
Hey,

This is listed on eBay, but would like a quick sale, so I'll offer it to you chaps!

    Heres my eBay description....

    Hi,

Up for auction is my Ibanez ARC500NT custom. She's in mint condition and is deffinatly one of the more stunning guitars Ibanez have made. This guitar plays beautifully, and I personally particularly like the fact the neck flows seemlessly into the body really giving you full access to all the frets.

The body is a Mahogany core with a beautiful carved quilted maple top, the neck has a rosewood finger board with a very nice series of artists inlays with a double binding round the sides. The neck is very smooth and plays brilliantly. The bridge is a Gibraltar 3 with a pair of Super 58 custom humbucking pickups.

The body shape is a single cutaway with all gold hardware, the knobs are custom wood and she even has mother of pearl tuners. The body cavity cover at the rear is also mahogany, not plastic like most (even very high end) guitars. Shes a real beaut, I dont really want to sell her, but I'm a bassist by trade, and I'm trying to fund a new head for my rig.

I will include a soft case with the guitar, its nothing major, but its keeps scratches and dust away!

Im on 07912222127 to discuss and would like a quick sale, so give me a ring if you want! These are quite rare, and dont come up too ofter, they really do hold their own up against the heavy weights in the guitar world, i.e. PRS, les paul's etc. You will not be dissapointed with this!

I also have a Marshall AS50R (acoustic amp) but this guitar sings through it. I will consider a deal for both if you want, again the amp is in as new condition.

    Thanks, Russ.

Heres a list of its features as per the Ibanez website.

Ibanez ARC500 Artist Electric Guitar Features:

    Mahogany single-cutaway body
    Artist style set neck
    22 large frets
    Bound rosewood fretboard
    Gibraltar 3 bridge
    Dual Super 58 custom humbuckers
    Artist inlays
    Gold hardware

No Trades please, just cash! £350 sees it walk away from me....

    Russ.

We improvise everything and theme it around DnB/Dubstep.

This year it's Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory so if you want to see Gene Wilder get filthy reese'd follow this link:

  7.
I've had a 1978 Jazz for about ten years now. The original body, in black, is absolutely horrible - very heavy and with a completely knackered finish (totally crazed and flaking). A few years ago a local luthier put a pretty good swamp ash aftermarket body on it and it plays very well now.

But I'd like to source an alder sunburst body for it with a bit of relic'ing (not too much though - it's only a '78). I'm not sure Bravewood (if he's still going) would be willing to do a relatively small job like this - can anyone suggest an alternative UK source for such a thing?

    Thanks.
Dont suppose you fancy a 70's Matsumoko Jazz bass body controls scratchplate and pups???

I have no need of it ,its just sat in the loft doin nowt spectacular :)

  8.
Hi Everyone, new to the forum, although being reading for around 12 months !!

Finally taking the plunge and purchasing a bass. After many reviews etc.. i've decided to go for a Washburn T14 or Ibanez GSR200. There seems to be around £50 difference in price although its not a major issue.

Is anyone able to tell me is there much of a difference between the 2? I'm a real novice so will be learning from scratch.

Any advice is much appreciated !

    Thanks, Mark.
Go to the shops and test them both or get someone off here maybe to assist you.ANYONE LOCAL???????.dont plump for the Ibanez without directly comparing them in hand.....Washburn have brought out some great guitars..... take the HB35S not rated on issue now has a great following and starting to command good money too...

I love Ibbys and have several.....but you need to be happy with it ...whichever you finally choose

    Good Luck

  9.
Plus one million to all of this. I think like the Marcus Muller thread or whatever he was called we should be calling time on this. Like Retroman I to agree a couple of the comments are starting to border on cyber bullying and quite frankly people, we are better than that... whatever we think of the comments in the OP
SO in effect you are saying ....we should not put the fella in the stocks and pound the hell out of him then

  10.
Very very nice, I quite fancy an Esquire.

Do you mind me asking how much that cost? PM?
£1450.....the Bill Callaham parts pushed the price up,.....
Using alternative parts and building it yourself it could be done for around £630,the body & neck are the main spend....but unless you pay the price you will end up with a run of the mill tele.....
I tried to keep it as original to a 50 Esquire as was possible,I think Martin surpassed himself with this one

  11.
Tino mate, I think you'll find that's your rather ambitious pricing structure.

Some people have to accept that they're just life's natural Ebayers - I mean no insult or disrespect, after all it takes one to know one! :)

I buy it here for a quid I sells it on the bay for £1,20.....Im happy the seller is happy ...
The question being...IZ TiM HAPPY :)

  12.
It would have to be very fine I guess.

    Does anyone produce this?

    Cheers.
Dont use tape it will react and wrinkle when laquered.....if not fixed by a laquer it will just come away...
I once used white nail varnish, leave a couple of days to harden ....then fine wire wooled to flatten and then laquered....... :)

  14.
Hey - thanks for the nice welcome! Michigan is a great place to live :-) I lived in the Lansing area for about 9 years during and after attending Michigan State University there. Had friends from Sterling Heights - so small world! Now I live on the shores of Lake Michigan, which is kind of like an inland ocean. You can even surf on it - if you are willing to wear a wetsuit during early and late winter when the waves are big enough!

Thanks already for some things to think about. I can play many of my fav tunes, and if its a blues song - I can jump right in no matter what song it is. I find that I can correct off notes quickly and get back on track in rehearsal - so I guess thats a good thing :-) I think as far as performing in a band goes - it will be a matter of finding a good group of bandmates to play with. BUT the idea of going to audition is pretty daunting to me I guess... So I hope to meet up with someone in a band someday as a matter of course, get to talking, and see where it goes. Also, there are a few places in the area that have "open mike" times each week. I think I'll go by and see what its all about, then maybe bring my gear along if it seems good, get to playing, and see who I might meet there. I have great plans sometimes after I've had a few and practiced a bit :)

Anyway - thanks again for a nice welcome - keep on playing low...
Lake Michigan is truly magnificent,I envy you.......Im back in Chicago in late Feb ....gotta get some snow boots Im told.....Kingston Mines I think still has open mic nights that are pretty cool....and we even managed to get the stage open in a House of Blues, that wouldnt happen here..the band lent us their gear in the break..good luck and a big ol welcome to you

  15.
Afternoon all.

Before I get into the nitty gritty with this thread, allow me to set out my stall and explain where I'm coming from...

Recently, I had a bass related epiphany when I discovered ACG basses; you can read about this here:

    http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=107600

It struck me that this was where I wanted to go with my bass collection. I have had many fantastic basses over the years but nothing with this level of craftsmanship. I have had many "handmade" basses (Alembic, Kubicki, Status) but this struck me above all else as being a beautiful, handcrafted instrument. It was also my first singlecut, something else new to my collection. The quality of the ACG has further inspired me, as I looked at British made basses as a whole, and it was not hard to reach to the conclusion that I did:

That here in Britain today, we have the best bass builders in the world. Think about it: ACG, Overwater, Status Graphite, Wal, Shuker, Sei and Jaydee, to name but a few. The fact that some of these builders are no more than a couple of hours drive from my house makes me realise that legendary basses are being crafted practically on my doorstep. I'd be a fool not to take advantage of this - not only could I have bespoke basses made without paying excessive customs charges, I could have the luthier's customer service too.

Alan at ACG guitars has been fantastic, I must take my hat off to him. After finding that I had bought an ACG bass secondhand he emailed me out of the blue with a manual for the preamp and an invitation to the Moffat bass bash. Since then we've talked about the bass and the possiblity of a custom order. I've spoken to Jon Shuker this week about a bass I liked off his website, and he was more than happy to give me more detailed information about it and comes across as a real enthusiast about what he makes. Similarly, Rob and Dawn at Status have always been fantastically accomodating via telephone or email.

Which leads me to where I am now. Having decided to collect my "best of British" stable, I really want to order new where I can and get the spec I want. I would primarily do this around January of each year - place an order with a builder and enjoy my bass a few weeks or months later with the joys of spring or summer.

I have been thinking of some ideas for a while now, although I'm not sure where to start. I'll list the sort of specs I've been thinking of below. I will obviously look for different wood choices in different basses but the other things are generally "my thing" and I'd like them wherever possible (eg headless design):

    *4 string, probably fretted.
    *34" scale
    *Thru neck wherever possible
    *headless where possible
    *singlecut where possible
    *Maple body
    *flamed maple or lacewood top
    *maple or ebony fretboard
    *black hardware
*wenge or ebony stringers in the neck
    *matching or black headstock

for the ACG I have considered ordering this type of thing with my wood choices:

Over the next few weeks I'll be giving the specs some more thought and seeing where I end up. I'm fairly sure I'll go to ACG for the order, although I'm still considering Status and Shuker as possibles. What do you think?
Try Martin Clarke
Superb Luthier & a very accomplished bass player to boot...well worth a chat with the fella real nice bloke,...I have used many builders over the years, today I would not use anyone else for my new builds or restorations..

    Good Luck
