Though I guess it might be the other way round if I was left-handed.

Yep, I'm a lefty and I prefer to stand at the drummer's right hand. It means I can turn a little towards the drummer but still avoid joining in on the cymbals with my head stock.

  2. If you interpret 'whacky' as a euphemism for 'cheesy crap', I can play. In one one band, when we ended with our cheesy Johnny B. Goode (yes, really. Sorry...) we'd slide it into the Batman TV theme, usually to the delight of drunken pub-goers.

Seemed like a good idea at the time...

I was not doing anything sophisticated ... root/fifth, with an octave now and then.  Some chromatic approaches, varying the beat from time to ... time, even throwing in some thirds when it seemed appropiate

Sounds like spot-on classic bass playing to me!

The optimum amount of shankspan to achieve the perfect equilibrium of balance and image is governed by the scale of your bass, ie a 34" scale bass equals a 34" shankspan.

Another argument for the short-scale fans...

Am tempted to try the whole "power cut" approach some time - I don't have a dog, but I could just get off my lazy butt and go for a walk anyway?

But then you'd pop in to the pub on the way and spend lots more than any saving... 😁

  6. Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuce!  at Hyde Park.

By 'eck, the energy and commitment he puts in, for a full three hours, is quite something. Almost no gaps between songs, very little chat, just finish one song, then "One, two, three, four!" and on to the next one.

Some superb bass and switching between fretted and fretless. The E-Street "wall of sound" did mean that it sometimes wasn't as clear as I like, but they are a superb band.

Thick board gunk on a P with flats? Lucky you. Leave it on and you'll play like Jamerson who said the chicken fat helped create those super Motown grooves.

Ummm...  that's really not likely for me... 😁

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

  8. I recently looked at my bass – I mean really looked. And it’s in a filthy state...

So how do I get rid of serious accumulations of fretboard gunk?

It’s an old P-Bass with flats and a rosewood board. And finger gunk has really built up on the frets and the board. What’s the best way of getting rid? Just a damp rag? A little water and a soft toothbrush?

When I change strings I usually apply some linseed oil, but while this preserves the wood, it doesn’t really clean it.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers,

That’ll be where I go with it, if I can’t put up with it as it is, although, I hate it when the top of the bass hangs away from your body. I’ve sold a couple of basses that did that.

When you are my shape the top of the bass always hangs away from you... 😃
