For a while my daughter worked for Tesco on a nightshift, filling the trays for home delivery orders. She doubted the worth of the substitute list when it suggested that the acceptable substitute for a customer order for vegetarian sausages could be meat ones.
What really did her in was a manager telling her not to think for herself and just put the meat ones in... 🙄

I don't have opinions about bass players' ability on guitar, but I *do* find that guitarists who pick up a bass often have a bad tone (because they don't pluck the strings properly) and their timing can be dodgy.
Yeah, I don't need a guitarist for that, I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself...

Stupidity (Dr Feelgood). Took another few years before I came anywhere the feel of John Sparks' original.

I watched my mate's band play a quiet cafe-style gig last night. Towards the end of the set they introduced a new song, Taylor Swift's Shake it Off. And they had a communal band-wide brain fart and couldn't get the riff going. They took three attempts then moved on to the next song.
They handled it brilliantly though, with lots of humour and asking the audience if anyone knew how to play it. When they finished, people asked them to have another go. And this time they nailed it. Got the biggest cheer of the night too.

Nick Cave at the O2 a week ago. I don't usually like huge venues like this - but...
It was an intense, sad, joyful, wrenching show that completely drew the audience in, probably the best show I've seen in years. Did I say intense?

I can't add much to what else has been said, apart from this. The vids don't sell you.
Yes, your playing is solid and competent, fine and ideal for the music. But the visuals aren't. You don't need to jump around, but maybe you should stand and just look more engaged.
Does this guy look like he could do the job and keep his energy levels up for, say, two 90min sets? Because that's what the band needs! I'm not sure your relaxed sitting position does that for you.
Keep networking though, and keep trying!
Cheers!

If I did the maths - a few grand's worth of basses and amps, numerous rehearsal studios, many, many hours of practice, fuel, car wear and tear etc etc, than count that against the fees from the dog and duck etc...
Yeah, overall I've paid to play. Idiot.

Yeah, but he never said what plectrum he uses... 😁
Seriously though, an excellent video. He has that completely relaxed look at the fretting hand that to me shows a top player, rather than that slightly panicky sweaty look I have...

How you deal with an over-enthusiastic guitarist...

Yep, I'm a lefty and I prefer to stand at the drummer's right hand. It means I can turn a little towards the drummer but still avoid joining in on the cymbals with my head stock.

Does any covers band do the original version of Proud Mary after Tina took possession of it?

If you interpret 'whacky' as a euphemism for 'cheesy crap', I can play. In one one band, when we ended with our cheesy Johnny B. Goode (yes, really. Sorry...) we'd slide it into the Batman TV theme, usually to the delight of drunken pub-goers.
Seemed like a good idea at the time...

I was not doing anything sophisticated ... root/fifth, with an octave now and then. Some chromatic approaches, varying the beat from time to ... time, even throwing in some thirds when it seemed appropiate
Sounds like spot-on classic bass playing to me!

The optimum amount of shankspan to achieve the perfect equilibrium of balance and image is governed by the scale of your bass, ie a 34" scale bass equals a 34" shankspan.
Another argument for the short-scale fans...
