The majority of posters in the thread appear to be unaware of thermal versus mechanical capacity.

Totally. I'm just a regular consumer who reads the side of the box and assumes that 1+1=2. If I can't actually get the 500w clean through 2 x 400w cabs and neither the manufacturer nor the retailer is educating me then I'm bound to remain clueless. That said, I wound't know 500w from 400w or 300w it it hit me in the head - I just go by how it sounds in the room or on the day - either it works or it doesn't.

  2. Decided to pull the trigger on the full Orange set up. Really pleased with the sound as much as I can test from home. Will put it through its paces at the next rehersal in the studio but if I'm honest, I quite like this sat in my front room as a piece of artwork 🙂

I have noticed some resonance in the amp on the open A string - a vibration which is audible but which disappears when you pick up the amp. Not sure if this is just the accoustics in my front room, something loose in the amp or just a lot of virbration from the cabs. I can always leave the amp on the floor but that's not idea and likely to get kicked. Perhaps a foam cushion between the amp and cab might also work.

We often have bands/ musicians come to our gig, but not for the music which is simple pop. They come to see how we achieve a silent stage and a vocal wall of sound without any backing tracks. Yes its expensive kit, but what are we going to spend our pension on?

That's fascinating - I missed that original thread but will be reading up on this. I'm coming up on 50 and never really considered that I might need a warchest for music-related projected - love it! GAS never relents 🙂

I am very lucky, my band Fynnius Fogg is celebrating, 50 years with the same founding members! We are obviously old but young at heart and have 23 gigs this year (played over 1000 gigs together)...it has been a wonderful friendship and life

That is so cool and such an amazing thing - congratualtions! You hear about all the 'popular' bands that run for ever like the stones, cure etc. but so lovely that there are regular bands that have such a life and longevity. That would really make we want to come to one of your gigs just to hear that sound which has been developed over such a long time.

I don't know about anyone else, but in my life I have found that when I couldn't afford very much, I was most keen to buy the things I wanted but could barely afford. Later in life when I could more easily afford things, I didn't feel the same urgency to get my hands on them. Just knowing I could have them whenever the fancy took me was enough.

^ this. I'm at my absolute worst when I can't really afford something - I buy and then sell and then buy and then sell just to have 'had it' but never actually necessarily wanting it in the first place or really appreciating it when I have it. It's most a physological state I suspect where I have to prove to myself that I can have it if I want it. My best and most considered purchases are generally when I don't impulsively dive in, just wait and really check in with myself if I really want and or need whatever I'm buying. It sort of just allows me to play out the purchase-and-sell routine in my head without actually having to go through it. 😉

When is it time to stop buying more basses?

No idea...... I own 76 at the moment!

I guess when I run out of room....?! lol!

    Basses et cetera right? 😄

I have just two at the moment. I don't want loads of 'standard' basses as I don't have the skill to actaully appreciate the different nuances of their sound . . . .  but equally I don't have the skill to justify buying an expensive or rare bass as it would be wasted on me. I suspect one day I will save and buy ad very special bass and just hang it on the wall as a thing of beauty and up from time to time to play and adore.

100% certain. It happened either in the case or at the rehearsal. Weirdest thing. But I look all over a bass when it arrives and you cannot miss this.

That moment you leave the room for a comfort break and your band mates decide to have a play with you new toy ….

  8. Good one for us. Headlining at a PTA event with around 5 other bands. We were in the final 10:15-11:00 slot which was in danger of being around the time that everyone had to go home to relieve babysitters. Needn't have worried as everyone was still there, predictably drunk and having fun on the dance floor. Good times!
