I bought a bridge from Cieran (a bass bridge, not London Bridge or anything) - he was a pleasure to deal with. Nice guy, good communications, fast delivery - a pleasure to deal with!

Squier do a "Precision Special" - P bass body, P-J pickups, Jazz width neck. I had one a few years ago and it was very nice for the money.

That's a really nice looking bass, and has solved the mystery of what Debbie Goodge was playing when I saw My Bloody Valentine a couple of years ago! It's a bit too similar to my Decade in looks and featues, or I'd be tempted. Have a bump!

Um. Ugh. Well, if anyone's looking for a bass to compliment their Squier '51 guitar, it'll do the trick...

...and by "I know what it looks like", I don't mean that I'm only interested in seeing the photos because of Lysdexia's interesting and innovative methods of displaying instruments. Well, maybe I do, a little bit. But what I really mean is that I used to own this bass, and therefore know what it looks like.

My photos of it are here if anyone's interested- needless to say, they're not up to the same standards as Lysdexia's!

Lysdexia - if you like the neck and pickups, it might be worth trying to find an oly white Jazz body and swapping the neck and hardware onto it.

I found that there was quite a bit of variance in the weight of the two I looked at. I first saw one in Newcastle, picked it up and was immediately struck by how heavy it was. I was still interested in the design to look for another one somewhere else, and found a lovely example elsewhere, which I'm very, very happy with. When I was back down in Newcastle over Christmas, I went back into the shop and confirmed that theirs is indeed a lot heavier than mine.

When I tried mine out, I also tried out a few other basses they had in the shop - Fender Roadworn P and 60th Anniversary Jazz, and Epiphone Jack Cassidy. To my ears, the Chi-sonic pickups were a lot fuller-sounding than the rest. They were all great basses, but I felt that the were each missing something from the tone that was all present in the Decade. Admittedly, it wasn't the most objective analysis, because I really, really wanted it!

Just back from a wee drive in the snow to sell Andy a Jazz bass - a pleasure to deal with, and to chat to.

I agree with the guys above about the Squier. You've played it, so you know what it's like, and it's easily available without the hassle of importing. The other thing to consider is that it'll likely hold its value better than the SX. These new Squiers are getting a lot of praise round here.

A couple of years ago, Stagg did a jag-shaped bass with two Musicman-style pickups in it, in blue. You might have a hunt for one, though, and I don't think the quality would be up to the level of the Squier.

So, really it all boils down to how important the colour is to you

I saw her in Glasgow on Saturday night, and it was a fun gig - a fair amount of stuff off her first album, a load of new stuff and Black Sabbath and Patti Smith covers. Her new album's (Out of our Minds) got a comment in it along the lines of "P-Bass + Ampeg SVT forever!", so she clearly trolls Basschat on occasion.

She hung about after the gig to sign stuff so I talked to her a bit, then she came over to the pub my mates and I were in afterwards. One of my mates is a massive MAdM fan, so, to in an effort to make her night even better, I was ORDERED by my girlfriend to go over to talk to the afforementioned foxy flame-haired four string flicker again, to see if she wanted to come over and sit with us. She didn't join us as she had other people to talk to, but she came over to say goodbye when she was leaving, making my friend very happy, which in turn made my girlfriend happy.

It's not often I get a into situation where I can make my girlfriend happy by chatting to hot redheads in bars...

The D and G strings don't go over the centre of the pole-pieces. Avoid it like the plague!!

Depends on the hardcase, I'd say, but I'd usually expect some additional packing. My general rule of thumb is "if the courier was to transport my package between A and B by kicking it there, would it survive?"

If you're looking for music shops, the best bet's to head to the Merchant City area of the town. There's Guitar Guitar on Argyle Street, Merchant City Music on Garth Street and Strung Out at King's Court, all within a few minutes walk of each other.

Up the other end of town where The Box is, Biggars is a few blocks down Sauchiehall Street.

If they don't give you food in The Box, pop a few doors along to Nice N Sleazy for a Sleazyburger - they're great!

If you like the Jazz shape, get a Jazz. If your bandmates want you to get more of a p-bass type thump out of it, wiring in a series-parallel switch is a fairly straightforward modification. Running the Jazz pickups in series gives a passable impression of a P.

Alternatively, if you're looking for a Squier with a Jazz body and a P pickup, the Frank Bello signature has it. Just a shame it also has a not-terribly-U2-like big ol' skull on it!

I had a BLX-80 years ago, and never got on with it. Traded it in for something else, which ended up being a complete dog of an amp*. Wish I hadn't bothered, because the only pleasure the dog of an amp gave me was when I tossed it in the skip after it completely gave up the ghost.
