1. I'm having a custom humbucker made by Allan at Catswhisker for my build.

Can't comment on the tone etc yet because it's not been made, but I can say he's a lovely bloke, incredibly helpful and knows what he's doing. If you've not spoken to him it might be worth sending him an email to see what he can tell you?

2. Hi everyone, my mate is selling his Ashdown Fallen Angel guitar amp and is trying to raise money for an Orange that he's after, since he's downsizing his rig after moving into a flat:

[i]
Ashdown FA60 head - £180
Ashdown FA60 head + Crate 4x12 celestion cab - £350

60 watt, 2 channel all valve head. Includes foot switch.
Clean channel, Overdrive channel with foot switchable gain boost, 2 independent master volumes as well as a volume on each channel. 16 built in foot switchable DSP effects, with a stand alone reverb.

As the name suggests this head is geared towards hard rock/ metal players. The over drive is really crunchy and raw sounding and with the gain boost can get really thick and dirty.
The clean channel is really nice for a rock amp, and when you add some of the built in chorus, it sounds really thick and rich.
The head is a very good all rounder, but ideally suited to a rock player.

I am happy to sell the head on its own, or pair it with a celestion loaded crate 4x12 cab. The cab is in full working order, but shows some cosmetic signs of being a gigging amp.
Although Crate isn't exactly a marshall, you cant fault the sound of this cab. Its solid build and casters make it ideal for gigging. The celestion speakers really scream but keep a nice punchy bottom end which sounds nice and heavy, but without sounding muddy.

To hear the head and cab paired up, listen to this recording of my band (All guitars where recorded using the head and cab, with no additional effects other than wah on the lead : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwL3xHHUO70 )

Finally, my reason for selling is simply that I have moved into a flat and need to down size my rig, im selling my stack and getting smaller combo.

Anyone considering buying is more than welcome to come and view/try it out before making a decision. :)

PIC (Not the actual one, just a typical press shot): Ashdown Fallen Angel

He's in Salford/Manchester. If anybody wants more info PM me and I'll pass on contact details

Cheers :)

3. I got my first guitar is 2006 I think, and never really got anywhere with it. I still have a couple now, but they rarely get touched unless I hear something I want to try to play - I'd say I'm pretty poor on guitar all round. Got my first bass in the middle of 2009, got into it later that year and since then I'd say I play it practically every day if I can.

I don't know what it is, I just find it infinitely more enjoyable and rewarding, and took to it much more easily. It works out because my mates play guitar so I fit in there too :)

4. Bought a set of Hipshot tuners off Tom, comms were great and he's a nice chap to deal with - even saved me a job and replaced some duff screws for me.

What's better is that they arrived quickly, securely packaged and wrapped like a lovely little bass-related birthday gift.

Cheers!

5.
Hi all

I'm selling some Filtertons after changing to Thundertrons. I've had the bass for nearly two weeks, four days with a Luthier and only used it on a couple of songs at practice. Therefore these things are virtually brand new. I'll box them in the Thundertron boxes.

If anyone is interested make me an offer before I chance my arm on Ebay!! They're go for 95.00 british pounds new. I obviously won't expect that, i'd be looking for about 70.00 pounds each plus postage and packaging. One recently went for close to that on Ebay.

I'll consider all offers but would like to make some of the outlay on the Thundertrons!

Cheers
What are the dimensions? :)

6.
Good timing my friend. Had my shipping notification email from Warmoth this morning, so the neck should be with me tomorrow, all being well.

Of course, pics when she arrives! After that I'm looking to get it sent to a luthier in Manchester to bolt her together and set her up just right.
Who might that be if you don't mind me asking? I'm thinking of finding someone in Manc for a setup when mine arrives but not sure where to go yet, apart from one in Stockport a mate uses

7. Hi all

Just a quickie, as I've never bought anything bigger than a CD from the States. If I was to purchase a pickup (soapbar) along with a couple of other bits (pickup ring etc) for a certain sum inclusive of delivery etc, would I incur any additional charges (tax/duty) when it gets here?

Cheers

8. Don't quote me on it, but I remember when I was researching my neck (I eventually got a MM aswell) I read on a forum that one guy had never had a perfect fit on any MM or Allparts (might of even been Warmoth) neck as they're always err on the slightly wider side to they can be sanded for a tight fit into the neck pocket. IE better to have a wider neck than one that will be loose in the pocket from the off.

It seems logical but like I said, don't quote me on it, I may be wrong.

That said mine went straight to the luthier to have a body made to go with it. The pocket was done to Fender spec according to him and he said it's a good fit, although MMs are slighly more rounded at the heel I believe. Maybe there's variation from neck to neck, no way of knowing really

9. Funnily enough I'd checked both of those options out, but to be honest the price is just ridiculous... I mean, $185 for an empty chrome cover? I could probably smelt one from gold for cheaper than that :)

I've pondered the option of having something made, it's a bit awkward though as if you look at the picture, the gap between the actual route on the left side and the scratchplate screw is tiny, so chrome rings are out of the question unless they're more Thunderbird style with the thin lip at the sides... I had a thought when looking at the darkstar thouh... perhaps it would be possible to have a thin flat chrome cover that is almost vaccuum formed to the shape of a soapbar with a tiny lip round the edges, with a hole in the top you can see the black plastic through. Then it could sit over the top of a soapbar and would look a bit darkstar-esque, only without pole pieces.

Did you get hold of any chrome covers?

The only alternative I found was that Artec make a chrome coated plastic soapbar. These are fitted as standard in BaCH Thunderbird copies, so I emailed them to see if they'd sell them individually as I've heard that it's supposed to be a pretty solid pickup. They replied with a very enthusiastic yes but they said they were waiting for more stock, so I'm not going to hold my breath...

10. Thanks :)

Yeah I checked out the mini HBs but alas they're gold and also, wouldnt be able to mount them in the cavity very neatly.

I keep thinking this would look cool with a Darkstar but no chance of getting one of those!

I should have some more pictures in the next few weeks.

11. Butterscotch (or some form of yellow) was my other option, but it would of only looked *really* good if the body was ash... also that's a tinted lacquer job. I've just managed to scrape what I need to have it finished solid white, and the black and white combo is one I've always really liked.

My dream bass used to be a white precision with a black scratchplate - that's now metamorphosized into this :) My other two 'dream' basses if you will are a sunburst precision with black SP, and a black jazz with a tort SP. And a 51 Precision in butterscotch. Haha, three then.

Cheers for the comments so far though, should be ready in about a month! I've just worked out that the additional finishing cost has overshot my original budget quite considerably, so if anyone has a set of decent tuners going cheap please drop me a PM!

12. Hi all...

People may have gotten used to me prattling on about bits for my project lately - specifically in the case of soapbars and humbuckers and the like. Well anyways, just so people are aware that it's not all in my head I thought I'd share a quick picture that the luthier sent across this weekend.

I've always been a sucker for stuff that looks individual or unique and thought a bass would be a nice project to keep me busy. I spent a few weeks designing a custom jazz bass after seeing the Mark Hoppus signature, and fancied one with a single humbucker in the mid/neck position and nothing at the bridge, with a once piece jazz pickguard. Not being a fan of Hoppus in the slightest, however, I gradually changed it bit by bit to put a some distance between them and make something a bit more unique. I think I went through every possible combination of jazzmaster, jazz and precision scratchplates on a jazz body before I finally settled on something while I was trying to track down a neck. I eventually managed to sort one through a contact on BC and at the last minute decided that if I wanted a jazz, I could get a Squier CV or something. If I was going to lay down some real cash on something custom (suppose I can call it a bit of a treat for myself as uni is finishing soon and I've not spent a considerable sum on a 'luxury' item for myself since I was working full time, about 4 years ago) then I'd go for something more outlandish. Anyways, I knocked up a design in a night and pretty much settled on it when a mate threatened to terminate our friendship if I didn't get it made.

Alas, this is the design... it's probably going to be a bit of a marmite one this. I always liked the telemaster guitar but being rubbish on guitar, I'll never own or have need for one. My original plan was to do all the painting myself, but working out what I'd need to spend on a mask etc, paints, supplies, plus not having anywhere decent to do any painting... I decided to have it finished properly. It's going to be slightly off white, sortof an aged olympic white. That wasn't really factored in so I'm going to be selling a guitar to pay for the finishing, but I don't play it anyway.

So yeah, here you go. All I'm missing parts wise are a set of tuners, straplocks and a pickup. I also have no electronics yet, aside from a tasty PIO cap from nick :) It's routed for a standard 4 string humbucker the same size as an EMG35 or a Seymour Duncan SSB-4. I'm just not a fan of the EMG tone. I'd LOVE a chrome pickup like a 60's Thunderbird but you can't have it all.... I'll eventually get something made but for now something cheap and cheerful might do the trick. I wanted a Wizard but according to Andy the 4 string GEM is too wide...
