1. Just a quick one this - I don't want to faff taking the knobs off and such so maybe someone already knows - I have a CIJ PB70US and I'm going to swap the cap at the weekend/shield it etc, getting some nasty buzzing when the tone is open so I'm guessing there's a bad solder joint or a loose wire somewhere. The vol pot has been crackling on occasion too.

I was thinking of taking all the stock stuff out (bar the pickup) and making a new harness with CTS pots, new cap etc. I have it in my head that pots on Japanese Fenders are smaller than usual, though. Have I got confused with Squiers or will a CTS fit fine?

  2. Hi all

I've been looking around for a decent re-amping box and a couple of obscure posts on forums pointed me to this site

    http://www.orchid-electronics.co.uk/index.htm

Nice range of DI boxes and other useful bits of electronics for signal conversions etc - I read these have a bit of a following in folk music circles but I'd never heard of them before. Made in the UK, their stuff is apparently great quality and seems pretty affordable compared to some. Has anybody used them?

I'm thinking for fifty quid I'd be hard pushed to find a better price on a reamping box and the DI boxes are attractively priced, might make good backup units. Opinions?

    Cheers :)

  3. Found this whilst browsing around:

I particularly like the line 'Not sure how much it's worth but I was told could fetch alot more than what it's up for as it's boxed'

Bearing in mind these are just Japanese knockoffs and I got one last week for about 25 quid complete with a good solid metal stand - and I think I overpaid on that - this just seems daft. Is it worth sending a message their way?

  4. Bought Gavin's tube preamp/DI. He was kind enough to post it to me to let me have a play with it, to see if it suited my needs before deciding to buy. And it did :D

Top bloke, great communication throughout and a real pleasure to deal with!

    Cheers

  5. Thanks gents - after reading around last night I had settled on a Zoom. They always seem to have had the edge on inputs - I have the original Zoom H4 - remember when that was the only one that offered XLR inputs? :D

I agree on the 96kHz point (hence my last minute change of mind post ) and that it's just overkill - after all bearing in mind Nyquist's Theory, and the fact that your upper hearing limit is going to be well under 20k anyway - is there a point? The 24 bit is the deal breaker though, the extra headroom makes a big diffference.

I had settled on the Zoom r8 last night purely based on the fact that it offers 48/24 whereas apparently the r16 does not - it;s 44.1/24 max. The downside to that unit, although cheaper, is a max 2 inputs recording at once. I think that would be fine for us BUT I like having flexibility. The reason 48 is good to have is because I'm a video producer... any audio I record for video is done at 48kHZ and in terms of sync, it would be a great additional feature should I need to use it for a video project at any point. I'm just reading up on the 24 track one, which I hadn't really looked into (I forget with these units they're not like mixers - more tracks doesn't necessarily mean more size anymore ).

DV247 says it does 48/24, I need to confirm it. I've also read that the R16 and R24 have a hardware crystal oscillator problem whereby the sample rate drifts quite significantly. About 4ms per minute - which could be a problem.

Nice one. Let me know if you need picked up. If Im free it wont take me more than a couple of minutes to get to the town centre

Cheers sir! I might take you up on that depending on what time I'm finished etc. I do video production so I'll have a fair bit of camera gear on me. Maybe BC can look forward to Circle Studios: The Movie

  7. Hi all,

Me and a mate are going to get a project underway very shortly and I've come to the conclusion that we're probably going to need to invest in some kind of recorder. Reason being - we're going to have to use a rehearsal room somewhere in Manchester (we think Blueprint Studios might be the one) due to where we both live and time constraints etc. We need a portable recording solution. We've both got old Tascam 4 track cassette recorders which are lovely and old school, and truth be told I'd love to have a nice 4 track reel to reel to get things down on :lol but naturally, that's not going to happen.

I've got a Zoom H4 but that will only do 2 inputs and it's probably not the best really. The focus is going to be getting clean, quality recordings that can be post-processed afterwards. The requirements are:

96kHz/24 bit recording

4 XLR inputs if possible

Simple, decent quality, low noise, save to SD card

Not bothered with effects or any fancy bells and whistles, I just want to get tracks recorded
I'm going to be using mics, DI and external preamps and experimenting a lot. The idea will be to get things recorded raw, then I can bring the recordings back home and mix things/process with outboard/drop to tape/reamp etc... Really not looking to spend a fortune either - 300-400 max?

If anyone has any experience of a decent unit that ticks the boxes, or even has something sitting round gathering dust?

Be great to hear some opinions :)

    Cheers

Glad you enjoyed it! If you are gonna be in Brum city centre its no more than about 15 minutes walk!

I'm going to Brum New Street then I've got a few mins walk to the place I'm filming (I do video production) but naturally, I have to carry a lot of rather heavy gear with me that makes a simple walk a lot more challenging...

I'll check what ticket I've booked when I'm back in the office on Wednesday - with it being Birmingham (ie not London...) there's a good chance I've got an open return and I'll be able to jump on any train home, hence I won't be limited by time... I'd really love to see the place!

  9. Even having just bought a lovely Japanese PB70 that has been discontinued by Fender Japan, I've got a maple Mighty Mite neck sat here and dreams of a black/black/maple Precision with a slightly hotter pickup...

  10. I've just spent a good while reading this from the start with a glass of red. Been a great read - can't believe I've not spotted this one earlier!

If I ever start playing the lottery, and subsequently win it, I might have a crack at building a studio with a plaque that says I read this thread.

I've just realised I'm in Birmingham on Friday, but it's a bit too far to walk to :(

oh well... I'm off to make the pizza I've been fantasizing about for the last half an hour despite being unable to stop reading...

  11. I've pondered it and drawn up plans for some, even sourced the vulcanised fibreboard for the bobbins (search for knife making supplies, it's often used as decoration in the handles and can be bought in sheets of different colours ahnd thicknesses) but never bit the bullet. I think it'd be a fun experiment if nothing less, you could probably adapt a drill to wind the wire and there are plenty of resources on the net for making a reed switch/counter from old calculators.
