Ok, I do consider it work as it helps us survive. So that might be part of why it's weird for us.

Drives my wife nuts, it happens so often.

I'll outline a scenario from recently to make it absolutely clear. We were at a lip-reading class, and the question was asked as to how we had lost our hearing. When it came to me, I said loud music because...etc. The lady next to my wife turned to her at once and asked if she went along to every gig, then was negatively surprised to be told 'no'. My wife suggested that it would be fairly odd if I went to her work every time she went...
Get the drift? Why do random members of the public think like this?

I'm still thinking my point is not being grasped. Do other people, on finding out from one's other half that you are a practicing muso, seem to think, for whatever reason, that she should attend every gig? Is that not completely weird?

Remember that part of the question is that people seem to EXPECT my wife to attend every gig, regardless, for whatever reason...that's what neither of us understand!

While I have every intention of having a good basic 5 again (likely another Yamaha BB), I find four and twenty eminently suitable for me just now.

Really appreciating the answers, everyone. Not heard yet from any of the lady players - similar problems?

Re the trust issue: my wife is quite often asked, "Don't you mind him being out doing this?", with the obvious nod to the, in my case, female element of the audience. These days, her answer (not yet deployed, but ready) is, "He doesn't know what [i]I'm[/i] doing while he's out..."

So the trust issue has to work both ways.

Out as a 3-piece again - my favourite! Very good gig in a small pub on the old A30 in Devon. Was rammed! Where did they all travel from? Well, one bloke apparently timed his holiday in Miami so's he'd be back for the gig...!

And really good pay to top it off. Result!

How many of you have suffered a tension (or worse...) in your relationships due to other people, including but not limited to relatives, asking your wife/girlfriend/partner/whatever if they accompany you to every gig?

If they don't go with you, why?

If they do, why?

EDIT: I'll add that I play up to 8 times a month, so possibly above average numbers for a covers band.

These may be very obvious to you, but if possible, I'd appreciate some feedback.

My situation: my wife can't imagine why anyone would think she went to work with me each time...or why anyone would be stupid enough to ask the question in the first place. I agree with her. However, she does often come to watch the bigger shows at the local 400-seater.

Mine started life as a stock black MIM Standard Precision. It immediately gained a black/white/black pickguard, and a tugbar.

Around 2007 it acquired a 1994 USA pickup, to see what difference it made. Answer: not much.

Around 2010, the neck started to go bad. Eventually, the truss rod started to emerge from the back of the neck, so an Allparts maple black blocks and binding neck was bought s/h from BC and fitted. Lovely neck.

Early 2015, and a brand new American Special Jazz neck was purchased from The Stratosphere on Ebay. This was in response to owning an AmSpl Jazz Bass for a short while. Still didn't like Jazzes, but adored the neck.

A set of Hipshot HB7s with oval paddles, and the bass was complete!

As I type, it sits besidde me. It needs new strings, 3-year-old TI Jazz Flats just don't have the punch for a full on rock band, but I use it anyway!
