String guage vs tension

Hi guys, I guess this is a slightly technical string question.

Recently I have been playing a lot of Stevie Wonder, with my bass tuned down half a step.
I have come to the conclusion, that as now is a good time to re-setup I should probably re-string and I REALLY want the feel of my current setup when in Eb - but for whilst in standard tuning.

I currently have on my Bacchus J-type bass the original set of elixirs which are 45-105s

So what do I do?

One friend recommended trying a 40-100 set of DR Low-Riders

Does anyone know the difference in tension from detuning half a set - and going down a guage?


I've also gotta say I am going to miss the tone that my current strigns give me, they are probably 10 months old, and for me have that perfect deadish roundwound sound - but I guess if I play that will come soon enough.

'Tension' (compliance is the better word) varies between brands of the same gauge, so its a bit bard to predict. Maybe the other dead string fans could organise a pass round so everyone can try various sets.
