Nut job

Hi there

The nut on my Jap 75RI Jazz needed replacing so I bought a new Tusq nut, like this one: http://www.wdmusic.com/tusq_fender_jazz_ba...pq-1214-00.html

However, it's too wide - by quite a distance:

so I think I need to send the nut back and get another. I guess this is down to the quirks of reissue models; does anyone know where I can find a suitable replacement?

Cheers

Doug

Spot on Wayne - the nut is a fair bit wider than the slot in the neck and, even if I filed down the sides of the nut, the E and G strings would be very close to the edge of the neck. It's a standard 1.5'' measurement. First time I've done this so I'm probably being dense... :)

I've always thought it was risky buying pre slotted nuts. The couple of times I've been asked to fit them they've always needed work which begs the question 'why bother?' It's actually pretty simple to make a nut up from a blank - you just need a needle file and some sandpaper. My EB-00's nut is disintegrating so I could do a mini build diary if anyone's interested.

Yup, I agree. I wouldn't buy pre-slotted nuts.

Just takes a bit of patience to make one from a blank. You can use either a hacksaw with the set knocked out or a feather-edged file (eBay £5) to start the slots and you can use your old nut for the spacing. When you get the slot started then switch to needle files.

Remember to angle the slot slightly downwards from front to back to make sure the string take-off point is at the front of the nut.

There's a great nut-making DVD available from Stewart MacDonald
