Advice from Cambridge-based bassists needed!

One of my students is relocating from the US to Cambridge in September as his wife will be studying at the uni and he's keen to get involved in any sort of playing opportunities that are available.

 

So, are there any open mics/jam nights or similar that he should go to (or avoid)? He's open to pretty much any genre, I think.

Oooh that's me! I'm a bassist from Cambridge! 

 

There's quite a few open mics and bits and bobs around. Village pubs are possibly better than the city. 

 

The Cambridge music scene has gone downhill in the last few years, due to venue closures, but there's still a couple of blinding venues! Let me know if you want anything specific (there is one to avoid, but I'm not going to publicly shame them here lol)

Thanks @urbanx, I think he's really open to anything at all. I suggested open mics as they tend to be a good way to meet people, do you have any particular recommendations?

I'm not really an 'open mic' attendee, but see posters for them about regularly, actually in town the main ones seem to be: 

• The White Swan on Mill Road - Every Thursday
• The Alma - Third Sunday

 

Venues I'd recommend to play / meet local bands . musos are mainly: 

• SixSix Bar - The only real dedicated, grass roots venue in the city centre
• Portland Arms - Dedicated music venue, but just outside of town (crap parking, but well served by busses)
