Not too long ago i bought a beautiful MIJ Fender 75RI jazz (proper Non export as mine has 70s spacing)

The bass is a 95 and NOS bass, imported from japan by the previous owner (it was lying in the back of a shop, and had been there for years), who straight away had a set of Lollar pickups added. The original pickups came with this, and i know certain 75RI came with USA fender pickups (advertised as such) however these pickups seemed to be on the "export" with 60s spacing.

I dont think they are USA as the bass was made strictly for Japanese market, and they have a large bar magnet on the bottom. Im sure ive read that certain Domestic models had very high quality MIJ pickups installed.

Anyway the 75 is a keeper, so these are lying in a drawer, ive briefly fitted them to my 82 JV jazz, and they have a very clear/modern HIFI tone, with a lot of highs, and tight in the bottom, they are fairly even in the mids and maybe voiced to bring out the ASH/Maple combo, they have slightly larger pole pieces than most, almost like a 1/4 pounder.

Ive put some fralins in the JV which has given it a grimy punchy 60s tone, making it a different voice to the 75.

I could be mental selling these, but i wont use them, and theyll really enliven a dull sounding jazz, maybe spruce up a squire, so hopefully theyll pimp someones baby 😊

In great, and id say fairly unused condition. Ill take £60 posted to UK for these.

Are these ceramic pickups?

Id say yes you're right. Ive been looking up MIJ pickups from that time, and it looks like this is a ceramic bar magnet. It would explain the tone, which is quite bright with a strong output.

  • lee650 changed the title to 90's MIJ jazz bass pickups
