I had a go on a 400 series bass which is clearly a much better model but what i would say is that the neck did feel quite big and low which i thought was quite nice but you might not like it. A lot of people have said that the cheaper guitars are pretty crap quality, like BC rich. I would say that unless you've got at least £500 to spend then you're probably better off with a more "normal" looking bass. It doesn't have to be a crazy shape to be good for that sort of thing. Budget basses i would say are "metal" looking and good quality as well are Ibanez and Peavey BXP series. They're both considerably cheaper than the LTD as well.
