Adding side dot markers

Has anyone ever done this themselves?

I've got a short scale bass that's throwing me a few loops as I'm not really used to playing with a shorter scale and find myself going for the wrong frets. It doesn't help that the bass hangs differently to the ones I usually play either. So seeing as it doesn't have any side markers I thought I'd add some.

I know you can buy the material for this on the web, but I'm wondering if that's the best way forward. I'm rather concerned about how difficult it might be to level the marker without doing too much damage to the side of the neck/fingerboard. Another option might be to use some kind of filler.

Any suggestions about the best way forward and the chances of success with nothing more than a hand held drill will be gratefully received!
