Matt E Posted January 5, 2015 Share Posted January 5, 2015 Hi all, Skipping all the pointless background info, I took my bass back to uni today, got it out and realised the pot / knob / whatever that controls the volume has come loose from the body - twisting it I can feel it being constrained by the wires connected into it inside, however the actual knob is now useless and twisting it will cause it to work at brief random points only. I guessing it may have taken a bash on the way down as it's poking out about half a cm out of it's socket. Any help appreciated as to how to resolve it. neepheid Posted January 5, 2015 Share Posted January 5, 2015 Remove the knob (loosen grub screw, or pull it off (I find wrapping a cloth/t-shirt around the pot shaft under the knob and pulling up on the cloth effective)). If it's taken a bash and there's wood damage you've got a whole load more problems than can be explained in a simple post. If it's simply loose then find the appropriate sized spanner/socket. Open up the cavity, hold the body of the pot while you tighten the nut with the spanner/socket. If the pot's knackered due to the impact (you mentioned that it was working intermittently), it'll probably need replacing. Intermittent operation could indicate a wiring problem. Matt E Posted January 5, 2015 Author Share Posted January 5, 2015 Thanks, managed to prise the pot of, I'll open up the back and carry as you said to as soon as I can get my hands on a screwdriver and spanner, which will be tomorrow. Matt E Posted January 6, 2015 Author Share Posted January 6, 2015 (edited) I think it may well be the wiring: sorted the pot out now (it still sticks out further than the other pots but it's now firm etc) however it doesn't work at all, twisting it either way produces no volume change via the amp. The soldering and wiring inside look OK, and the amp works fine, so it's either the lead between the two or something internally within the bass. I'll take it into a couple of stores and see what they reckon... Edit - it must be the guitar's electrics as I've just realised the lead still creates static on the metal around the input.
