Guest MoJo
I'm looking for an extension cab for my recently acquired Peavey BAM210 combo. The obvious candidate, the PRO210 seems to be as rare as hens teeth. My idea then, is to use the earlier 210TX and swap out the drivers to produce a cab that responds in a similar way to the combo, volume / tone wise. Below, are the specs of the Sheffield TVX1035 fitted in the 210TX Sheffield TVX1035 Impedance: 8 Ohms Power capacity: 300 W Peak 150 W Program 75 W Continuous Sensitivity: 89.1 dB 1 Watt / 1 meter Usable frequency range: 60 Hz ~ 4 kHz Cone: Kevlar® impregnated cellulose Voice coil diameter: 1.75" / 44.4 mm Voice coil material: 2 layers, thermally bonded copper wire Kapton former Nomex® stiffener Net weight lb. / kg: 7.4 lbs. / 3.4 kg Znom (ohms) 8 Revc (ohms) 5.88 Sd (Square Meters) 0.335 BL (T/M) 9.37 Fo (Hz) 49.3 Vas (liters) 38.7 Cms (uM/N) 243.5 Mms (gm) 42.80 Qms 4.03 Qes 0.880 Qts 0.720 Xmax (mm) 3.5 Le (mH) 0.14 SPL (1W 1m) 89.1 No (%) 0.50% Vd (cu. in. / ml) 7.1 / 117 Pmax (Watts pgm.) 150 Disp (cu. in. / ml) 83 / 1360 And below are the specs of the Blue Marvel drivers used in the BAM210 combo Blue Marvel 1038 Impedance: 8 Ohms Power capacity: 600 W Peak 300 W Program 150 W Continuous Sensitivity: 93.8 dB /1W 1m Usable frequency range: 50 Hz ~ 4 kHz Cone: Impregnated cellulose Voice coil diameter: 2.0" / 51 mm Voice coil material: 2 layers, thermally bonded copper wire Kapton former Nomex® stiffener Net weight lb. / kg: 8.0 lbs. / 3.6 kg Znom (ohms) 8 Revc (ohms) 6.10 Sd (Square Meters) 0.035 BL (T/M) 12.82 Fo (Hz) 46.9 Vas (liters) 49.2 Cms (uM/N) 295.0 Mms (gm) 39.10 Qms 10.83 Qes 0.480 Qts 0.440 Xmax (mm) 4.0 Le (mH) 0.44 SPL (1W 1m) 93.8 No (%) 1.50% Vd (cu. in. / ml) 8.5 / 140 Pmax (Watts pgm.) 300 Disp (cu. in. / ml) 89 / 1459 The question is, will the Blue Marvel drivers work in the 210TX enclosure? Also, what Eminence driver has specs closest to the Blue Marvel? Edited March 30, 2014 by MoJo
Guest MoJo
Bill? Alex? Anyone with an understanding of WINISD?
Balcro
Hi Mojo, After looking at those 2 speaker choices in winISD, I would say don't touch the "Sheffield". I couldn't get it to produce reasonable graphs and it appears best suited to working in a closed box. Even then I think it's fairly poor as a bass speaker and it's less efficient (quieter) than the Blue Marvel, so even if you had it, it would sound quieter and less effective than the combo. On the other hand the "Blue Marvel" driver is just fine with good low bass extension in a vented cabinet at between 75 - 90 litres fitted with two drivers. Just like the combo. Best to look out for an old BAM cabinet. Balcro.

Balcro
Hi Mojo, Yes it does work. See the attached graph (95 litres- roughly the size of a 210TVX cab) . As Celestion say on their web-site "it has a rich warm tone and a powerful low-end thump". If the cabinet volume is reduced to about 80 litres then the hump is much reduced, but still a hump. Guest MoJo
Thanks for doing that for me
Phil Starr
Just a thought, is that frequency plot with one or two drivers in the cab? My reservation with the Celestions is their relatively high fs.(fo in Peavey speak) if the cab is tuned to 50ish Hz it may need the ports re tuned. Balcro
Hi Mojo, Further to previous posts, I would still advise you to look at a matching pair of Peavey Blue Marvel 1038 speakers. They're about £70 each on ebay-uk. Alternatively why not contact Peavey UK in Corby. The Celestions will work OK in a 95 litre cabinet and the general efficiency is similar (as far as you can tell from manufacturers spec-sheets) but they will have their own particular tonal characteristics which could be very different to the Peavey combo and at worst, for technical reasons, the combination of different drivers in the enclosures could produce indistinct sounds. Best of luck. Balcro.
brensabre79
+1 contact Peavey UK, they are very helpful and accommodating. They even supplied a long obsolete part for my 1970s peavey amp last year! Peavey Electronics (UK) Ltd Great Folds Road Oakley Hay Corby Northamptonshire NN18 9ET Tel: 01536 461234 Fax: 01536 747222 Changing speakers in any cab is a risky business and in my experience the best you can expect is that it won't be any worse. it's rare that you'll improve things. I've been recommended suitable replacements by blue Aran and Eminence in the past and while the drivers functioned ok, the sound was pretty far from OK to be honest.
